Suspensions And Upsets

By Hoya Hoops
  • Notre Dame earned its first conference road win on Saturday, defeating Villanova 90-80. Kyle McAlarney led the Irish with 30 points; Freshman Antonio Pena led the Wildcats with 18 points and nine rebounds, but he couldn’t keep Villanova from falling to 3-4 in conference play.
  • Rutgers stunned Pittsburgh, using a 45 point second half to beat the Panthers 77-63. Corey Chandler had 18 points as the Knights won only their second conference game and first on the road.
  • Connecticut Coach Jim Calhoun suspended two players before his team’s game against #8 Indiana. Jerome Dyson and Doug Wiggins were suspended indefinitely, but the Huskies were still able to pull off the improbable upset, beating the Hoosiers 68-63. Craig Austrie picked up the slack for his suspended teammates, scoring 15 points, including six critical free throws down the stretch.
  • Providence lost its second straight conference game, falling to a short-handed Syracuse side 71-64. Scoop Jardine was suspended indefinitely by Jim Boeheim, but the Orange were still able to defeat the Friars, who drop to 3-4 in conference action.

Mike’s West Virginia Postgame Thoughts

Teams

Georgetown:
The Hoyas pulled out another win in dramatic style. It seems as though all the pieces are not yet in place, as the team can still go stretches with limited offensive production. But, for the third time in the Big East season, the team has been able to dig down and get scores when it matters most, and this time they have another hard-earned road win to show for their efforts.

West Virginia Recap

By Hoya Hoops

Jessie Sapp made a three-pointer with 6.2 seconds left to give the Hoyas a one-point lead. Then Patrick Ewing Jr. blocked a layup as time expired to preserve the win and give the Hoyas their second straight victory at the buzzer. Da’Sean Butler drove baseline on the last possession, and as he got to the rim, Ewing swatted his shot away. Coach Bob Huggins and the West Virginia coaching staff were appalled that the block wasn’t ruled goaltending, but the referees thought it was a good block. Television replays were inconclusive.

West Virginia In-Game Thread

By Johnny

Hey everybody, Johnny here from the West Virginia University Coliseum in Morgantown. This is going to be a crucial game for both teams, as the Hoyas are facing their toughest challenge of the middle third of the Big East Season, and West Virginia can sit atop the conference with a win tonight. Big East games are always hard-fought, and road games are that much more difficult, so don’t expect this to be an easy game for the Hoyas.

Third Down

By Tony

The Big East will be competing in an 18-game conference schedule this season. That’s two more games than in previous years. At this point, the Georgetown Hoyas have completed the first third of the season. Through their first six games, the Hoyas are 5-1 and in sole possession of first place. They’re 33% of the way there to repeating as Big East regular season champs. The conference schedule very neatly falls into three parts, and now is a good time to examine where the Hoyas are, going into their tough game this weekend in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Defensive Stopper

By Hoya Hoops

This past week, the Hoyas had a thrilling overtime victory over Syracuse. The style of the play brought back memories of classic defensive battles from Big East games of the past. We thought this would be a fun question:

Who was your favorite Georgetown defender?

Lots of good choices, but we think Don Reid was our favorite. He was big and tough, blocked a lot of shots, and probably fouled out more times than not during his career. How about you?
