Living the Dream

By Mike

For any basketball player, your dream is to someday play in the NBA. Even at the earliest age, you grow up watching your heroes on the court and imagine yourself in their shoes. This becomes even more palpable when you are a college athlete, knowing you are just one level away. And while fellow classmates Jeff Green, Roy Hibbert, and Patrick Ewing, Jr. are off living the dream, Jonathan Wallace is not.

Bowman to Bonn

By Hoya Hoops

So just after posting a piece about Jonathan Wallace and Tyler Crawford playing in Slovenia, we get an email from David Volkmann from Telekom Baskets Bonn. Apparently, the German league’s reigning co-champions has recently signed Brandon Bowman to a one year contract.

David provided us with this press release, the 2008-09 roster, and a photo of BoBo and his new coach and center Tim Clifford.

He also informed us that Brandon rolled his ankle on his first layup attempt with his new side, but it wasn’t too bad.

Around the World

By Hoya Hoops
  • Slovenian team Union Olimpija has signed recent Hoya graduates Jonathan Wallace and Tyler Crawford to play for them in the upcoming basketball season. Links about Jonathan are here and here, but for Tyler, all we could discover is that Google doesn’t speak Slovenian. If you think you can decipher it, here’s the original link.

**Edited: Tyler Crawford was not signed; he was just on trial with the team. No word yet on his future status with the team.**

  • The USA men’s basketball team took home the Gold Medal in the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games. While there were no Hoyas on the roster, Jeff Green practiced with them in preparation for the tournament and here’s what he had to say about the experience.

Tombs Wins 2008 Kenner League

By Hoya Hoops
  • Yesterday afternoon, the Tombs defeated the Madness All-Stars in the Kenner League Championship with a final score of 81-65. Incoming freshman Jason Clark and Henry Sims were on the team along with returning sophomores Chris Wright and Nikita Mescheriakov. Greg Monroe was on the team earlier in the summer, but he had to return home after his summer classes finished. Over the course of the summer, Roy Hibbert also had a few appearances playing with the Tombs.
  • Over at guhoyas.com, you can find the new Hoya roster with the players’ heights, weights, and numbers. Of note is that Nikita has switched from #10 to Rivers’ old number, #5, and Greg Monroe has taken 10. Also, transfer Julian Vaughn will be wearing Tyler Crawford’s old jersey, #22.
  • With the Summer Olympics commencing this past weekend, there have been plenty of stories about past olympians. NBCOlympics.com profiled Patrick Ewing last week on his birthday, and GUHoyas.com ran a piece on Alonzo on Friday

#33 Turns 46

By Tony

Many Happy Returns of Patrick Ewing’s Birthday

The original Big Fella turns 46 today. Big Pat’s got a lot on his plate these days: he’s still an assistant Coach for the Orlando Magic, his son is looking to get picked up by an NBA team, and in a month or so he has to go all the way to Massachusetts to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. We’ll have a much nicer tribute to Patrick when we get closer to Hall of Fame weekend, but for now, just think back on your favorite Ewing-Georgetown moment and if you have a drink sometime today, lift your glass to Patrick Aloysius Ewing, Sr. And since it’s for him, lift your glass up a lot higher than usual.

Not Much News

By Hoya Hoops

As CO_Hoya pointed out over at Hoya Prospectus, there’s not much going on in Hoyaland right about now. But to keep all of your appetites sated, here’s what we have for you:
