Leading Scorer

By Hoya Hoops

In our last Pregame Predictions, we asked you to predict the number of points Greg Monroe would score. He ended up scoring 11 points, going 3-6 from the field in the Hoyas’ 58-50 win over Wichita State. That means that Hoya Gray was the closest, giving him another correct guess. Well done.

The Hoyas pride themselves on being an unselfish team. In the three games this season, Georgetown has had a different player lead the team in scoring. We thought we would ask you to pick the next one.

Which player will lead the team in scoring against the Volunteers and how many points will he have?

We think it is Jessie Sapp’s turn to step up, and his leadership will be needed against a tough Tennessee side. We think he’ll get 16 points. Give us your predictions in the comments, and try to cut into Hoya Gray’s early lead in the race for the Hoya Hoops t-shirt.

Wichita State Recap

By Hoya Hoops

Georgetown withstood a sloppy performance to eventually pull away from the Wichita State Shockers 58-50 in the opening round of the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Florida. The Hoyas were led by Austin Freeman, who scored a game-high 18 points on 6-10 shooting. DaJuan Summers scored 14 points all in the second half, and Greg Monroe added 11 points. The Hoyas are now 3-0 to start the season.

Wichita State In-Game Thread

By Johnny

Hello! I’ve made it down to Florida, I’m sitting on the floor of The Milk House in the Wide World of Sports Complex in Walt Disney World, and I’m watching the end of the opening game of the Old Spice Classic between Tennessee and Siena. Right now there’s 10 minutes to go and the Volunteers are winning by 17. The Hoyas will begin their game half an hour after the finish of this game, so the 2:00 start time was a little off, but hopefully that means you all can finish your turkey and digest in front of the tube.

I’ll give you the lineups as soon as I get them and I’ll be posting updates and comments throughout the game. Feel free to leave your own thoughts and comments below. (You know the drill.)

Fresh Look

By Mike

Like I did last year, I’m going to give my first impressions of the freshman class for the Georgetown Hoyas. Since Tony talked about Greg Monroe, the early impact he has had, and his clear potential to be a superstar yesterday, I want to take a look at the other freshmen and newcomers to the team who might get overshadowed by Monroe’s recent performances.

Greg against Garrett

By Hoya Hoops

Before the Drexel game, we asked everybody how they thought Austin Freeman would perform offensively. Turns out pretty well, as he went 6-7 from the field including 2-3 from three-point land, and he ended up with 16 points. Zo nailed it by guessing 16 points, even though Austin actually shot better than Zo had predicted. And on a game where Alonzo Mourning was there signing his book and answering the Jiffy Lube Trivia Question, we think it’s appropriate a commenter named Zo wins the prediction.

Now for this week’s question. Tony talked about Greg Monroe yesterday, the media’s been singing his praises, and the fans are pretty excited about him too. Tomorrow, Greg will be facing taller opposition for the first time in his Georgetown career as he is set to face off against Wichita State’s freshman center Garrett Stutz. Stutz had a big game against Centenary on Monday leading all scorers with 22 points off of 10-13 from the field. With that in mind, here’s our question:

How many points will Greg Monroe score against Wichita State and how well will he shoot?

We’re going to say Greg will put up 16 points off of 6-10 from the field. Tell us what you think and work on catching up to Hoya Gray and Zo in the Hoya Hoops T-shirt race.

Big Expectations

By Tony

After an impressive season opener followed by an even better second game, the word on the street is that Hoya Freshman Greg Monroe is a walking NBA Lottery pick. When you’re on the street though, you have to be careful what you listen to, or it might amount to what you can step in on the street. At the post game press conference after Monroe’s impressive line against Drexel, the initial barrage of questions was about Monroe. The questions were along the lines of, “Is there anything Monroe could possibly improve upon?” and “Do you think he’s the best player in college basketball, ever?” Coach Thompson was quick to point out that Monroe has only played two games, and even though he has good skills and awareness, he has a long way to go. Many reporters will dismiss that as a coach downplaying his star player, to prevent opponents from knowing how good he is. Fortunately for the Hoyas, Coach Thompson is a little more focused on the team’s continuing progress than the reporters are.

Moving Up the Rankings

Mike’s Drexel Postgame Thoughts

By Mike

Teams

Georgetown:
What a difference a game makes. After a lackluster performance in the season opener, the Hoyas came out focused and ready for their second game. The team jumped out of the gate, taking a 15-2 lead to start the game and never looked back. During that opening stretch, the Hoyas had suffocating defense, as the Dragons went 0-5 and committed two turnovers in the five minute span. And while the result was never in doubt, the team did a good job of not letting up, especially on the defensive end. Georgetown ended up with 13 steals to go along with four blocks, as Drexel shot a paltry 24.5% from the field on the day.
