We’ve been talking a lot lately about the Hoyas’ home winning streak, and how at last the Hoyas have a real home court advantage. After the impressive win against UCONN on Monday, it’s time to turn our attention back home, as the Hoyas face Pitt on Saturday at the Verizon Center. We’re hoping Georgetown can keep the streak alive against the Panthers, and we’ve also put together a small list of the best moments so far.

Does anybody know what an upset is? Me neither. But I do know that an upset doesn’t have anything to do with little imaginary numbers that are next to team names in TV graphics. The headlines for the Georgetown win over Connecticut will almost all have the word upset in them.
But that’s because the people who write headlines don’t study the teams or games; they rely on those little imaginary numbers. When you assess if a result is an upset or not, just ask yourself the following question: “If this game was to be played 10 times, would this result occur three times or less?” If the answer is “No” then it’s not an upset.

- The Big East conference schedule got underway yesterday, and Georgetown beat Connecticut 74-63 giving the Huskies their first loss of the season. It was also the first Big Monday game, and over the next weeks there will be a lot more Big East action on ESPN on Monday nights.
- The new rankings were released yesterday, and once again the Big East had seven teams in the AP Top 25 and eight teams in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll. Georgetown moved up one spot in both polls to be #11 in the AP and #8 in the Coaches’ Poll.
- West Virginia’s Alex Ruoff took home the Big East Player of the Week award and Rutgers freshman Mike Rosario earned Rookie of the Week. Ruoff scored 38 against Radford last week and Rosario put up 26 in the losing effort against North Carolina.
- In non-league play, Villanova beat Temple 65-42 and Cincinnati lost to Memphis 60-45 yesterday. Tonight, Big East action will continue as Seton Hall takes on Syracuse at 7:00.

Georgetown:
The Hoyas entered Big East play without a win against a high-profile opponent, and the team came out with something to prove. After taking a lead and weathering a few comebacks, Georgetown pulled away, leading the second-ranked team in the nation by 17 late in the second half.

The Georgetown Hoyas began their 2008-09 Big East opener with an 18-3 run, but it was an even more critical 24-10 run late in the second half which propelled the Hoyas to a convincing 74-63 victory over the #2 ranked Connecticut Huskies.
Georgetown hadn’t won a road game at UCONN since 1997, but the bad history didn’t affect the Hoyas’ focus. Freshman Greg Monroe had an excellent start in his first career Big East game, as he collected three assists, a steal, and his first collegiate three-pointer all in the first six minutes. Monroe led a balanced attack for Georgetown, as four players finished in double figures. The defense was perhaps more impressive than the offense, as the Huskies were held to their lowest first half scoring output of the season. Georgetown led 36-27 at the intermission.

Hey everybody, Johnny here from…Silver Spring, MD. Okay, so I didn’t make the trip to Hartford, but I’ll still be managing this thread. It’s the first game I’ve missed all season, and I’ll have to settle with watching tonight’s Big Monday game on ESPN2. For those of you watching along, feel free to post your thoughts and comments, and for those listening to Rich, your questions will be answered.
I’ll be checking back once it gets closer to game time, but for now I’ll leave you with this: The last time Georgetown beat Connecticut on the road was in the 1996-97 season. Hopefully, these Hoyas will be able to break that skid and bring home a victory from up north.

We here at HoyaHoops.com call ourselves “the most comprehensive Georgetown Basketball website.” In order to stay true to our claim, we have to make sure we remain straightforward and honest. If you are a loyal reader of our site, you know that we post new content every single day from the middle of October through April. Unfortunately this is where the ‘we’ becomes ‘I’. I wrote an article just before the season began which dealt with the three-point line being moved a foot farther away from the basket. You can read the article if you missed it, but let me give you the relevant information.

After a couple of months of tuning up, the true season begins tonight for the Georgetown Hoyas. Today marks the opening of the 2008-09 Big East Regular season. The Hoyas will begin their defense of the Big East regular season title that they have won the past two years. Starting tonight in Hartford, CT, they’ll be fighting for the Three-peat. Even though the Hoyas are 9-1 and have already faced some difficult competition in the early part of the season (Wichita State, Tennessee, Memphis), the opening portion of their Big East schedule is brutal, and easily the hardest of any team in the 16-team conference.
