Silence Is Golden

If you live in the DC Metro area (which for the purposes of this article means from Baltimore, MD to Hampton, VA) and you don’t like the Washington Redskins, sports coverage must be very annoying. The Skins are the one item on the local sports scene that trumps all others 100% of the time. Recently, mid-week Redskins news was seen as of equal importance to the Wizards firing Eddie Jordan. The Maryland Terrapins are the Washington Redskins of DC college basketball.

Similar to the way the media treats the Redskins, for Maryland Basketball there is very little criticism, unusually high amounts of optimism, and never any blame placed upon the team’s responsible parties. The Hoyas on the other hand usually get much fairer coverage, which always seems to be incredibly harsh compared to the local perception of the Terps. So, now after years of public opinion being that Georgetown was the only party preventing a meeting between the two schools, fate provided everybody with a chance to finally see the Hoyas and the Terps meet. I know that all of the press and reporters from the DC area expected an excellent game. Everybody knows how good a motivator Coach Williams is, and how his teams always rise to the occasion against top flight opponents.

Now, after years of waiting, the press can just shut up. Georgetown didn’t beat Maryland, they destroyed them. There was nothing the Terps could do to score, and there was even less they could do to stop the Hoyas. I’m sure that Coach Williams tried to prepare his team for the back door cuts, and ball movement. They knew what was coming, and they still were helpless to stop it. It was a forgettable night for the Terps, and I know the players and coaches at Maryland will continue to improve and make a push for an at-large NCAA tournament bid. The win was much more damaging to the fans.

There is another group of individuals who need to shut up too. Maryland fans have lived in a state of delusion for a long time. Many of them thinking that somehow out of fear of losing the Hoyas were avoiding Maryland. Those fans must be pretty confused about the result on Sunday night. There is no gray area about the Hoyas and Terps this season. They are on different levels. The Hoyas are not a lock to make the NCAA tournament and the Terps could realistically claim an at-large bid in three months. But whatever happens during the season will reflect the differences in the two conferences and not the ability of the Hoyas compared to the Terps. That verdict is in, and the Hoyas are guilty of first degree 30-point assault.

The Georgetown victory also puts the local media in an awkward position. They will have to admit that the Hoyas are totally superior to Maryland, or they will have to say that Maryland is a bad team with a lot of big problems. Either way, there can’t be a lot of enthusiasm for the Terps at this point. Personally, I don’t care if it takes 20 more years before they meet again, maybe by then the glow from this win will start to wear off.
