Mike’s American Postgame Thoughts
By MikeTeams
Georgetown:
The Hoyas started the game flying, playing suffocating defense, hitting their three-pointers, and getting cuts and layups inside. By the time Jeff Jones called his first timeout with just under five minutes played, Georgetown was up 13-0 and the game was already out of reach. Georgetown could have stopped scoring right there, and they still would have been winning at halftime. However, the Hoyas did lose focus in the second half, and both their offensive efficiency and defensive prowess was noticeably worse. Fortunately their halftime lead was nigh insurmountable.
American:
American fell into an early ditch and was unable to come out of it. They trailed by 28 points at halftime, more than twice their first half point total of 12. However, after the break they stepped up the defensive intensity, which caused some early turnovers by the Hoyas. They also did a good job defending Greg Monroe, who did not have one of his best games. He was 3-7 from the field and had four turnovers, partly due to American’s decision to double-team him on almost all of his low post touches.
Players
Georgetown:
This game had a team effort feel, which certain players stepping up in different ways at different times. I would say that DaJuan Summers had a good performance, scoring 14 points, but also grabbing three offensive rebounds to keep possession. It was good to see a more concerted effort from him to get rebounds. Let’s hope the rest of the team follows suit.
American:
It was not a good day for the Eagles, as none of their players got into double digits in scoring. Brian Gilmore made the first two baskets for American to break the ice, but at that point his team was already trailing by double digits, and things did not get better for the Eagles.
Referees
Not too much to complain about here. The crew missed a few calls, as will always happen, but I can’t remember any call that had a negative impact on the game, and that’s a good thing.
Fans
There was a good-sized crowd for this game, but up in the 400′s a small but vocal contingent of American fans could be heard at the beginning of the game. They didn’t stay loud for long though, as there was not much to cheer for if you were an Eagles fan.
Number of the Game
7: Number of turnovers committed by American before the Eagles converted on their first field goal. Overall the Georgetown defense was unrelenting, forcing 20 turnovers and holding the Eagles to under 35% from the field and forcing sharpshooter Garrison Carr to go 2-17 from the field, hitting only one out of 11 three point tries.
Here’s looking at me, kid
We have been talking a bit about local rivalries on this site for the past week, and we thought we should bring a sign to this game to express how we felt the area teams stack up. Our cleverness was rewarded when I won fan of the game. Special thanks go out to Tony, who created the sign. He’s not getting any of my Gordon-Biersch microbrew, though.
