Savannah State In-Game Thread
By JohnnyHey everybody, it’s me Johnny, checking in from the Verizon Center about half an hour away from tipoff between your Georgetown Hoyas and Horace Broadnax’s Savannah State Tigers.
I hear that Allen Iverson might be in attendance tonight as his Detroit Pistons face the Washington Wizards on this very court in 24 hours. If he does show, he’ll surely be noticed – I don’t expect much of a turnout tonight. So far the place is empty and the student section is two rows deep.
I’ll be checking back in with updates, but until then, here are the starting lineups and ref for tonight.
For the Hoyas, it’s the usual 5 – Summers, Wright, Monroe, Freeman, and Sapp.
For the Tigers, it’s going to be Josh Smith, Anthony Jones, Glen Izevbigie, Jovonni Shuler, and Rashad Hassan.
The refs tonight are going to be Tony Greene, Doug Sirmons, and Tony Crisp.
Keep your in-game thoughts coming in the comments, and if you’re listening at home without any TV for the game, feel free to ask any questions you may have and I’ll fill you in as best as I can.

Alright lets go hoyas!
December 8th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
Mike here in section 120, as always. It’s pretty empty today, not even many students. I guess exams are soon.
December 8th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
Hoyas win the jump, and DaJuan Summers hits a three in the first possession of the game.
December 8th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
Nice block by Jessie in transition, but it all started from a poor pass by Summers on the other end.
December 8th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
I’m watching the feed on GU Hoyas. Nice break by Chris Wright.
December 8th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
16:00 timeout and Hoyas are up 10-3. Georgetown’s 4-4 from the field, and the Tigers are 1-8.
December 8th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
Early on, Hoyas a little sloppy with the ball. Already two turnovers.
December 8th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
I like the shooting
December 8th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
That was unfortunate. Could have had a steal there
December 8th, 2008 at 7:47 pm
Great help defense there
December 8th, 2008 at 7:47 pm
Hoyas have a pair of blocked shots, leading to a Savannah State shot clock violation.
December 8th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
Six and a half minutes in, and the Hoyas have their first miss. But Vaughn pulls down the rebound and makes up for Summers’ miss.
December 8th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
Thought we could have a perfect game
December 8th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
11:44 to go in the first half, and it’s 24-7 Hoyas. Tigers’ ball when we get back.
December 8th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
I didn’t know Omar had that move.
December 8th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
Nice move by Sims – he got cut off on his way to the basket, so he pulled back and knocked down the five-foot jumper.
December 8th, 2008 at 7:58 pm
Shuler just picked up his third foul, and things have gone from bad to worse for Savannah State. It’s 30-9 and Horace needs to use his 2nd timeout.
December 8th, 2008 at 8:01 pm
First team foul on hoyas. Dubious call.
December 8th, 2008 at 8:04 pm
Oh yeah! Jiffy Lube Trivia Question of the Game:
Which of these NBA teams drafted Alonzo Mourning in the 1st Round of the 1992 NBA Draft?
A. Charlotte Hornets
B. Miami Heat
C. New Jersey Nets
D. Toronto Raptors
December 8th, 2008 at 8:04 pm
A. He’s right!
December 8th, 2008 at 8:06 pm
Wow.
December 8th, 2008 at 8:06 pm
Greg just showed off some top-notch post moves, as he spun around his defender and dropped a baby hook while getting fouled. It looked like when he caught the ball, he knew this guy couldn’t stop him.
December 8th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
i knew that. dont think miami or toronot exitsted back then
December 8th, 2008 at 8:08 pm
Outlet pass to Nikita…spin move in the post…close range shot….completely dominated by the rising defender. Hoya ball, though.
December 8th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
As the students got louder with their “BRYON JANSEN clap-clap clap-clap-clap” I peaked over at the bench, and Jessie Sapp and DaJuan Summers were clapping along and mouthing “Bryon Jansen”
December 8th, 2008 at 8:11 pm
2 missed freethrows is no good for nikita
December 8th, 2008 at 8:13 pm
Great effort by Jessie to stick with the play and eventually get a pair.
December 8th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
Fr. McFadden said that last foull was on Vaughn but I thought it was on Sapp. Johnny you know who it was on?
December 8th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
Mike – It was on Vaughn. Hoyas have four fouls: Clark, Vaughn, Monroe, and Freeman.
December 8th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
The net didn’t move after that DaJuan three-pointer. It’s 50-12 Hoyas.
December 8th, 2008 at 8:21 pm
Henry Sims pump faked, and everybody here expected him to shoot the three. I think the pass was a good idea.
December 8th, 2008 at 8:22 pm
can we hold another team to 12 at the half??
December 8th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
@DJ: haha, nope. Raye Bailey hit a three at the buzzer to make it 57-15 at the half. Still impressive, I think.
December 8th, 2008 at 8:43 pm
Three threes to start out the second half for the Tigers and they’ve almost matched their whole 1st half offensive production. Coach Thompson needs a timeout to remind his team to play defense.
December 8th, 2008 at 8:43 pm
in the first 19:55, they scored 12 points. In the last 2:20, they scored 12 points.
December 8th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
Savannah State shot 18.8% in the first half. In the first 3:41 of the second half, they’re 4-7 or 57%.
December 8th, 2008 at 8:47 pm
Here comes the DC Lottery Gatlin Gun! NO SEAT IS SAFE!!!
December 8th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
Was that Chris’ first ever dunk as a hoya?
December 8th, 2008 at 8:51 pm
I think that it was. I don’t have a perfect memory, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen Chris dunk the ball. That’s what you get when you’re the only guy on that side of the court.
December 8th, 2008 at 8:55 pm
Monster backdoor slam for DaJuan. That’s why they call it the Princeton Offense on steroids.
December 8th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
Jessie from waaaay downtown. Its 72-28. This might be the 100 point game of the season.
December 8th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
It definitely will be if Nikita keeps knocking down his threes.
December 8th, 2008 at 8:58 pm
And now, being the 12 minute timeout, it’s time for Jack to eat the box.
December 8th, 2008 at 8:58 pm
It wouldn’t let me type in just Wow again
December 8th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
The ref here just made the table add three seconds to the clock that ran off accidentally. In a 44 point game, I don’t think we need those three seconds.
December 8th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
There you go. Vaughn had been struggling lately, losing the ball, getting called for an offensive foul, and being held up for a jump, but that time, Julian sent down a two handed slam.
December 8th, 2008 at 9:06 pm
Looks like they’re going back to the usual 3 options for Fan of the Game. Lately they’ve kinda been disorganized here at Verizon Center. I guess it’s the preseason for them too.
December 8th, 2008 at 9:06 pm
Not you this time Mike?
December 8th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
With the Hoyas winning by 50 with 6 minutes left, the students are already calling for Jansen. Instead, Chris Wright and Greg Monroe got sent to the scorer’s table.
December 8th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
@Hoya Gray,
This time, Mike’s got a sign for Horace Broadnax, not as FOTG material as one insulting the Terps.
December 8th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
Good thing they didn’t do the “usual” for fan of the game on Saturday or Mike never would have won. The cute kid always gets the prize. It’s sounding like I picked a good game to miss.
December 8th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Another wow. Nice dunk there JAson
December 8th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
There was a huge driving dunk by Jason Clark there, but oddly no replay here at the 4:00 timeout.
3:40 left, Hoyas leading 89-33.
December 8th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
There’s a little scuffle now, as after Julian got fouled, it looked to me like he swung his fist, mad at himself for getting roughed out of the play. I think some Tigers took it the wrong way as everyone was kinda close to each other.
December 8th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
The two student sections don’t care. They’re calling back and forth BRYON…JANSEN
December 8th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Double technicals, and for some reason, both teams get to shoot two. Jones hit 1 of 2 for the Tigers, and Omar hit both.
Bryon Jansen has checked in.
December 8th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
Timeout? I’m getting bored but I cant leave until the end
December 8th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
There it is: Sims’ first three-pointer of the season. He is now 1-8.
December 8th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
Hoyas wining 98-36 with Bryon Jansen going to the line to shoot 1-1. And the crowd goes wild.
December 8th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
Standing ovation after the first free-throw.
December 8th, 2008 at 9:25 pm
And this place is jumping after he makes it 100.
December 8th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
Good win hoyas. Now get ready for the other Tigers.
December 8th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
That’s the game 100-38 Hoyas. I’ll post some stuff later on tonight or tomorrow morning, but the recap is already up.
