Mike’s Savannah State Postgame Thoughts

By Mike

Teams

Georgetown:
The Hoyas did what they should do against an inferior opponent: dominate. But, it’s important to remember these games are not about the actual result, but about improving and preparing for the Big East season. In that sense, the reserves got lots of minutes, which should be helpful to their development. Also, the rebounding numbers were much better, which is to be expected against a much smaller lineup, but still good to see.

Savannah State:
This team was clearly outmatched. Perhaps the one bright spot came at the beginning of the second half. The Tigers came out and made three threes in a row, causing Coach Thompson to use a timeout. Unfortunately for Savannah State, it only cut the lead to 35.

Players

Georgetown:
Julian Vaughn had a strong performance today, scoring 7 points, going a perfect 3-3 from the field, getting three assists and grabbing eight rebounds. If he can keep rebounding like that, he will earn himself more minutes.

Savannah State:
Raye Bailey had a game-high 15 points, and although it was not nearly enough to change the outcome, he was clearly the best player for Savannah State.

Coaches

Former Georgetown player Horace Broadnax returned to play against his alma mater and didn’t fair too well. However, one thing I did notice is his use of Big John’s substitution style. When subbing in more than one player at a particular whistle, he would send them to the scorer’s table one at a time. I remember John Thompson Jr. doing this often when he was coaching the Hoyas. I guess that’s an example of Horace learning from the best.

Fans

There were not many people there for the first Monday night game of the season. Perhaps it was due to the opponent, perhaps because of exams, but even the student section, which in recent years has been full more often than not, was barely a quarter full. The Memphis game is this Saturday, so hopefully the students will be able to take a break from their studies to come and support the Hoyas.

Number of the Game

45: Largest first half lead for the Hoyas. A layup by Greg Monroe with 11 seconds left in the half pushed the Georgetown lead to 45, before Bailey’s three at the buzzer gave us the halftime scoreline of 57-15.
