Mike’s Florida International Postgame Thoughts
By MikeTeams
Georgetown:
The Hoyas looked much better today than in their last contest. The team moved the ball well, getting wide open looks offensively, and put on the clamps defensively, holding Florida International to a frigid 24% from the field in the first half.
Florida International:
Florida International was in over its head in this game. They were missing a few of their regulars and were forced to play a couple of walk-ons, but I don’t think a full squad would have changed the result much. They did not seem to have the tools to stop the Hoyas.
Players
Georgetown:
Austin Freeman shot the lights out on this night, connecting on his first five threes and shooting 67% from the field on the evening. Perhaps it will be a good omen going into Big East play.
Florida International:
Michael Dominguez did his best to keep his side in it, scoring 20 points. He was 6-14 from beyond the arc, while his teammates were 0-6. On the negative side, though, as his coach was sure to point, he did have 7 turnovers on a night when they couldn’t afford any mistakes.
Referees
Not much to say on this front. I think everyone on the arena, including the refs were ready for Christmas break to start.
Fans
As to be expected, it was a rather subdued crowd at Verizon Center, as the normally packed student section was sparse. And with fewer fans, it made it easier for this guy to win his second Fan of the Game award.
Number of the Game
29: Number of consecutive home wins for the Hoyas, dating back to January of 2007. With this win, the Hoyas have set a new home winning streak in the modern era.
Start Me Up
For the first time in 80 games, Jessie Sapp found himself coming off the bench. He had started every game since the second game of his sophomore season. Fortunately, the breaking of his streak was not due to any physical or disciplinary trouble. It was to reward Omar Wattad for his hard work during practice. A nice gesture by coach Thompson to one of his workhorses.
