My Bad, DaJuan

By Tony

We here at HoyaHoops.com call ourselves “the most comprehensive Georgetown Basketball website.” In order to stay true to our claim, we have to make sure we remain straightforward and honest. If you are a loyal reader of our site, you know that we post new content every single day from the middle of October through April. Unfortunately this is where the ‘we’ becomes ‘I’. I wrote an article just before the season began which dealt with the three-point line being moved a foot farther away from the basket. You can read the article if you missed it, but let me give you the relevant information.

Here’s what I thought about how the new three-point line would affect the Hoyas:

Jessie Sapp, Chris Wright, and Austin Freeman have the range to step back even farther if needed, but that leaves DaJuan Summers as a question mark. Can he make threes from the new line? Yes. For sure. But he is the one returning player who might have the hardest adjustment to the new line.

So, like the title says, “My Bad, DaJuan.” I really thought that he would just stop taking threes, but I was dead wrong. Besides still taking threes, Summers has been better this season than last season. Take a look at his numbers through the first ten games of last season compared to this year:

DaJuan’s Three-Point Shooting
2007-08 3PT FG 2008-09 3PT FG
2-5 vs. William and Mary Game 1 vs. Jacksonville 0-1
1-2 vs. Michigan Game 2 vs. Drexel 0-4
0-2 at Ball State Game 3 vs. Wichita State 2-5
0-1 at Old Dominion Game 4 vs. Tennessee 2-4
2-5 vs. Fairfield Game 5 vs. Maryland 3-5
3-7 vs. Alabama Game 6 vs. American 2-3
2-4 vs. Jacksonville Game 7 vs. Savannah State 2-2
2-5 vs. Radford Game 8 vs. Memphis 1-5
2-6 at Memphis Game 9 vs. Mount St. Mary’s 2-5
1-4 vs. American Game 10 vs. Florida International 1-2
15-41 (36.6%) Totals 15-36 (41.7%)

An excellent improvement – the same number of makes on five fewer attempts. Over the last eight games he’s been even better, up near 50% at 15-31. Hopefully he’ll keep up the good shooting and I won’t have to admit that I was wrong about this post.
