Mike’s Seton Hall Postgame Thoughts

By Mike

Teams

Georgetown:
The Hoyas followed a lackluster performance against West Virginia with an equally uninspired performance against Seton Hall. The team was again frigid from beyond the arc, shooting 3-22, and were it not for shooting an impressive 85% from the free throw stripe, Georgetown would not have been in this game down the stretch.

Seton Hall:
To be honest, the Pirates should have lost this game. They had a number of chances to put the game away, but missed critical free throws that left the door open for Georgetown. Fortunately for them, the Hoyas were unable to capitalize, and the result was the first conference win for Seton Hall.

Players

Georgetown:
Jessie Sapp again impressed me. He made some shots, showed a lot of hustle for loose balls, and grabbed nine boards. He even showed a little of his old swagger, penetrating and crossing over defenders, even leaving one on his behind. If the one thing to come out of this losing streak is that Jessie Sapp is back to his old self, then maybe it’s worth it.

Seton Hall:
Robert Mitchell scored 12 consecutive points for the Pirates to close out the first half right as it looked as though Georgetown might open the game up. He stepped up when his team needed it, since Seton Hall leading scorer Jeremy Hazell did not have his best shooting night, going 5-21 from the field.

Referees

The refereeing was fine today. Some bad calls, and it seems as though they lost control for a bit to start the second half, when the intentional foul committed against Summers led to double technicals on Jessie Sapp and John Garcia. But, I would say on the whole they did a good job, it was a little tighter than I prefer my Big East games, but they were for the most part consistent.

Number of the Game

14.8: Combined field goal percentage for DaJuan Summers, Chris Wright, and Austin Freeman. The three went 4-27 from the field, a microcosm of the team’s shooting woes over the past couple of games. Georgetown as a team shot under 33% for the first time since February of 2007, when the Hoyas were soundly defeated at the Carrier Dome by Syracuse. That was the last loss for Georgetown until the Final Four. Maybe the Hoyas can repeat that feat.

20 Years

At halftime, Seton Hall celebrated the 20th anniversary of their trip to the Final Four. The 1989 Pirates went all the way to the Championship game before losing by one to Michigan in overtime. Then-head coach P.J. Carlesimo was in attendance, reminiscing about the good old days. Don’t look for a hero’s welcome for P.J. in 20 years at an Oklahoma City Thunder game.
