Duke’s Effect

By Tony

Like it or not Duke University has a major impact on college basketball. The amount of publicity and positive representation they receive from all media outlets can be annoying, but it can also be helpful. Take the example of the Duke team from 2006. The Blue Devils were undefeated and traveling on the road to visit a middling Georgetown team that was struggling through Big East play. Of course we all know what happened on January 21, 2006. The win not only was an important milestone for Georgetown Basketball, it was a major step in the Hoyas’ return to prominence. Most of the recognition from that win was a result of the fact that the win came against Duke and the Duke aura. An identical win over #1 ranked and undefeated Kansas or Kentucky would not have been such a springboard for the Hoyas. So on that day, the Duke mystique helped the Hoyas.

Threes

By Hoya Hoops

Before the Seton Hall game, we wanted you to tell us how Georgetown would fare from the free throw line. About the only thing positive to take out of the loss to the Pirates was the free throw shooting. Georgetown was very impressive, going 23-27, or a little over 85%. That means we at Hoya Hoops were the closest since we guessed the Hoyas would go 23-28. Not too shabby on our part. Better luck to all of you, and to the Hoyas, this week.

The Hoyas have been absolutely atrocious from beyond the arc in the past few games, shoot under 20% during the team’s three game skid. We wonder if the streak will continue.

What will Georgetown’s three point field goal percentage be, and who will make the most?

Our guess is the team will be a much improved 40%, with DaJuan Summers getting the team off the snide. Put your guesses in the comments.

Hoyas and Irish Struggle

By Hoya Hoops
  • The new polls came out yesterday, and after the two losses this week, Georgetown dropped to #25 in the AP and #23 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll. From nine teams in both sets of rankings two weeks ago, to eight teams in both last week, there are just seven teams in the AP Poll, as Notre Dame moved down to #26.
  • Pittsburgh’s Sam Young and South Florida’s Augustus Gilchrist took home the Big East honors yesterday with Young earning Player of the Week and Gilchrist Rookie of the Week. Not surprisingly, no Hoya made the weekly Honor Roll.
  • On Big Monday last night, Marquette beat Notre Dame 71-64 in South Bend. After winning 45 straight games at home, the Irish have dropped two in three days.

Mike’s Seton Hall Postgame Thoughts

By Mike

Teams

Georgetown:
The Hoyas followed a lackluster performance against West Virginia with an equally uninspired performance against Seton Hall. The team was again frigid from beyond the arc, shooting 3-22, and were it not for shooting an impressive 85% from the free throw stripe, Georgetown would not have been in this game down the stretch.

Hoyas Drop Another

By Hoya Hoops
  • The Georgetown Hoyas traveled to New Jersey on Sunday to play Seton Hall, and they lost their third straight game. After the 65-60 loss, the Hoyas are now 3-4 in the Big East.
  • Four teams in the Top 10 lost games this week, highlighted by undefeated #1 Wake Forest’s 78-71 loss to Virginia Tech at home.
  • On Wednesday, the Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the Golden State Warriors 122-121. With 1.6 seconds on the clock, the Thunder, down by 1, inbounded the ball to Jeff Green who knocked down a jumpshot off the glass as the clock expired.
  • Last week, after considering a comeback like fellow Hoya Dikembe Mutombo, Alonzo Mourning officially announced his retirement. Last year, after the injury which basically ended his career, we talked with some Mourning experts about Alonzo’s legacy.

Seton Hall Recap

By Hoya Hoops

The Georgetown Hoyas dropped their third consecutive game, this time losing to previously winless Seton Hall 65-60. The game was close throughout, but in the final minutes, the Hoyas found themselves unable to come up with that decisive play to give them the victory. Austin Freeman and DaJuan Summers each missed an open three-pointer that would have given the Hoyas the lead, and Jessie Sapp airballed the potential game-tying three pointer with under ten seconds to play.

Seton Hall In-Game Thread

By Johnny

Hey everybody. We’ve got a little over fifteen minutes to go before the Big East conference matchup between the Seton Hall Pirates and the Georgetown Hoyas. This is the first time that the Hoyas travel to the Prudential Center in Newark, and the Pirate fans are excited to be honoring the 1989 Final Four team on the 20th anniversary.

The Pirates have yet to win a conference game, and this sold-out matchup with the all-stars of 1989 present might be enough motivation to get Seton Hall into the win column. Coming off of two straight losses, the Hoyas will need to step up their game to avoid that from happening.

I’ll be checking in with in-game thoughts, comments, and info, and everyone watching from home, listening on the radio, or sitting in the Prudential Center with a cellphone, you can do the same below.
