Temple In-Game Thread
By JohnnyHey everybody, Johnny here courtside at Verizon Center. It’s still over an hour from tip-off, but the students were just allowed in, and those who don’t have Tuesday afternoon classes or those who were faithful enough to skip have already begun trickling in.
It’s an odd time for a tip-off so we won’t have a good sense of how crowded the Phone Booth will be until closer to game time, but Coach mentioned that he wants a lot of fans out here so we don’t look bad on our first appearance in front of a national audience. I say if there’s no one in the stands, but the Hoyas win by 100, that won’t be too bad of a national introduction either.
I’ll be checking back throughout with more information and in-game updates, but for now the only info I have is the refs. It looks like the officials are gonna be Jim Burr, Mike Roberts, and Michael Stephens – a pretty standard Big East crew covering the Hoyas home opener.
It’s the Georgetown Hoyas against the Temple Owls, coming up.

November 17th, 2009 at 3:03 pm
They’re playing “Gold Digger” and during the pregame shootaround, a handful of Owls joined in for “We want prenup, yeah!”
November 17th, 2009 at 3:35 pm
The team’s just come out for their layup line wearing gray warmups with blue and white trim.
November 17th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
And the song they’re warming up to? “Chillin’” by Wale.
November 17th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
According to the score board here (which has been wrong before), here are the starting lineups:
For the Hoyas – Wright, Clark, Freeman, Vaughn and Monroe
For the Owl – Ryan Brooks, Juan Fernandez, Luis Guzman, Lavoy Allen, and Micheal Eric
November 17th, 2009 at 3:57 pm
Teams are doing their last warmups before the game tips off, and this time I noticed that freshman Jerrelle Benimon isn’t dressed today.
He did earn himself a minute against Tulane, so I wonder if he reaggravated his offseason injury in practice. I’ll find out as soon as I can.
November 17th, 2009 at 3:59 pm
They just showed the pregame video – same song, new video. Odd to see Hibbert in one of the first shots, though.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:03 pm
They’ve just announced the Temple Owls’ starting lineups.
Same song for the Hoyas’ starting lineups. Pretty loud here for a below-average size crowd at the start.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
Julian wins the opening tip, and the Hoyas start the scoring with a backdoor to Wright.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:08 pm
Foul on Chris Wright there for running into a screen. That’s the point of a screen, isn’t it?
November 17th, 2009 at 4:11 pm
Offensive foul on Freeman. We’re less than 4 minutes in and there’ve been 5 touch fouls called (2 offensive)
November 17th, 2009 at 4:14 pm
Chris Wright with a chance for a three-point play when we get back from the 16:00 timeout.
The scoreboard isn’t showing points and fouls here, but no one has 2 fouls yet.
4-2 Hoyas
November 17th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
Sims entering the game for Vaughn. Nobody’s looking very good on offense out there.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:22 pm
Hoyas lead 6-2 at the 12:00 timeout, but Temple will be shooting two shots when we get back, and Chris Wright has 2 fouls.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:22 pm
Len Elmore is a fool…that’s why his nickname is Len “El Moron”. But even he can see this game is terrible. Yuck! Come on Hoyas.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:23 pm
Chris is staying in with the 2 fouls.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
Vaughn back in for Greg, Hollis seeing his first minutes replacing Austin.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
Hollis Thompson picks up a foul, and the Hoyas have 6 team fouls with 9:43 to play in the first.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:31 pm
Austin Freeman; Best mid-range game in the country…Rip Hamilton would be proud.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:31 pm
8:00 timeout = Jiffy Lube Trivia Question
Who hit the game winning 3-pointer for the Hoyas in their 72-69 win over Connecticut on January 12, 2008?
A. Jon Wallace
B. Roy Hibbert
C. Tyler Crawford
D. Jessie Sapp
November 17th, 2009 at 4:31 pm
The Temple 2-0 run feels like a major scoring blitz in this game!
November 17th, 2009 at 4:32 pm
RE: Trivia
B. Roy Hibbert – Duh
Is it still that weird dude with glasses doing the trivia contest at Verizon? He looks like a muppet.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:34 pm
Backdoor to Hollis gets him on the board, and extends the Hoya lead to 7.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:38 pm
Re: Trivia
It as so easy, the crowd was chanting “Roy Roy Roy” before the multiple choice.
And yeah, it is still the guy with the glasses.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:40 pm
It’s the 4:00 timeout. Hoyas are leading 16-10, and if the score didn’t tell you, both teams have been abysmal on offense.
Hoyas: 6-21 = 28.6%
Temple: 4-21 = 19.0%
Both teams: 0-15 for three-point land.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:40 pm
Mike here in section 120. Neither team shooting very well. 16-10 at the four minute time out? That’s not very good.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:40 pm
As Henry Jones Sr. said to Henry Jones Jr. in ‘The Last Crusade’, “Our situation has not improved.” Come on Hoyas, FIGHT!
November 17th, 2009 at 4:41 pm
Yeah, what Johnny said.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:41 pm
They just did the little kid contest where they wear the huge shoes and stuff, but now it’s just a large “We Are Georgetown” T-shirt. No more Kevin Braswell and Anthony Perry jerseys.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:43 pm
And now Temple’s Fernandez hits a three, matched by a 3 by Clark
November 17th, 2009 at 4:44 pm
Nikita recently subbed in. He tried to drive to the basket and fell down. Not very good.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:45 pm
1:10 to go in the half, and Coach uses his 1st half timeout. Hoyas leading 19-13.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:47 pm
Hoyas will have the last shot of the half, but the ball was knocked out of bounds, and Temple decided to use their timeout.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
Mike just made it onto the Big Screen here. Maybe we can have another HoyaHoops fan of the game.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
Traveling on Freeman with 2.9 to play in the half.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:49 pm
i just saw hoyahoops.com
November 17th, 2009 at 4:49 pm
That’s it. Hoyas winning 19-13 at the half.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:49 pm
ugly game
November 17th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
That’s a BS travel…no chance. I saw the Hoya Hoops sign on ESPN…nicely done boys.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
I need 15 minutes to regroup…the Hoyas need some energy. Maybe a Red Bull, or a twinkie!
November 17th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
Think the Hoyas will win with 38 Points? No chance…50 points, probably…80 points for sure, let’s Light It UP!
November 17th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
I could use a twinkie myself now that I think of it!
November 17th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
So at Preseason Media Day, at one point Shap said that we couldn’t talk with Nikita because he was filming something silly for the big screen. I just saw it. And it was silly.
He was doing this dance where he pumped his fists.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
1st FT’s for Monroe I think
November 17th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
@Zo,
Yep those are his first FTs. And he went 1-2,
November 17th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
Largest lead!!!! Another Assist for Monroe, does he have 4, 5, more? Lemme know HH.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
Wright hit a 3 to push the lead to 27-15, and Temple needs a timeout.
Hoyas scored 19 points in the first half, and 8 in the first 3:07 of the second.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
The first 2 hoops of the game were his assists, as were the last 2.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
@Zo,
Monroe only has 3 assists. And he’s got 3 points and 7 boards.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
And now, one block.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
@Zo,
Greg only had 1 assist in the first half – the first basket.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:14 pm
Jim Burr just gave Temple a three-point play, but the whole thing was after the shot clock.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:22 pm
Temple making a run at the Hoyas, connecting on 3 three-point plays.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:24 pm
Goaltending on Sims after a Temple breakout, and the Owls have their first lead of the game, 32-31
November 17th, 2009 at 5:26 pm
Not very good for G-Town…19-4 run for Temple. We’ve seen this before unfortunately!
November 17th, 2009 at 5:27 pm
34-31 Temple, another Georgetown timeout.
Some student behind me screamed, “Hey Coach. Do something.”
November 17th, 2009 at 5:27 pm
Temple sagging defensively, Hoyas will have to make some jumpers.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
Hmmm…
November 17th, 2009 at 5:29 pm
It’s time for Jack to “eat that box”
November 17th, 2009 at 5:33 pm
Jump ball goes to Temple, but before that, Greg clearly called timeout, and it looked like he had possession at the time.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:35 pm
Seems like 1 fast break basket would really help the Hoyas…everything in the half court is awful. Passing, spacing, shooting, movement, backdoors. “Run your offense” will NOT win this game.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:37 pm
Probably should have been 5 seconds as Freeman tried to inbound. Hoyas turned it over anyway.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:39 pm
This time, Temple calls a timeout before the jump, and Coach is not happy.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:41 pm
Clark hits a three to tie the game at 39, he pumps his fist, and this place goes wild
November 17th, 2009 at 5:41 pm
Basket and the foul for Greg. The Verizon is quite possibly the loudest its ever been at 5:45 on a Tuesday
November 17th, 2009 at 5:44 pm
4:00 timeout and the Hoyas are down by 2, 42-44.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:45 pm
Half court execution…not a G-town strength lately, but that will determine this one over the final 3:50.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:48 pm
Contrary to what Fr. Mc Fadden said, that was Hollis Thompson’s 4th Foul
November 17th, 2009 at 5:49 pm
Again, Fr McFadden said Wright has 3 fouls – he too has 4.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:50 pm
Hoyas now trailing by 3, 42-45 with a little over 2 minutes remaining. Wright to shoot 2.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:54 pm
Hoyas call timeout, with the ball, down 1, with 55.1 seconds to play.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:54 pm
Oh boy.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:56 pm
Wright misses a difficult three pointer, and Temple rebounds. Monroe fouls to stop the clock.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:57 pm
Allen misses the front end of the one-and-one, and Hoyas get the board. Timeout, 17.2 seconds to play, still trailing 44-45.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:58 pm
Monroe drives and scores, but now the refs are looking at the replays for something?
November 17th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
The clock didn’t stop after Monroe’s hoop, refs trying to set the time…probably about 5.5
November 17th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
Greg was at the high post with his back to the basket looking for cutters. Then he just turned and drove to the basket for a layup, not wanting to take any chances with the clock.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
Once again, G-town scorers table cannot do their jobs properly.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
6.5 seconds
November 17th, 2009 at 6:00 pm
@Zo,
Don’t tell anyone but there’s another mistake – they say Temple has 14 fouls (which they do) but if you add up the Temple players, it only comes to 13.
Someone’s got a personal that’s not counted.
November 17th, 2009 at 6:01 pm
Guzman drives the length of the court, looks like he got mugged by Freeman, Burr calls a jump, Hoyas ball with 1.3 seconds left.
November 17th, 2009 at 6:01 pm
Hoyas inbound to Monroe, and they call a foul with 0.3 remaining.
November 17th, 2009 at 6:02 pm
Now, the scorers thought it was 1 and 1 and so they ran out the clock after Monroe missed the first of a 2 shot foul
November 17th, 2009 at 6:04 pm
Hey! For the pre-game predictions…don’t count that last FT, Monroe missed it on purpose.
November 17th, 2009 at 6:04 pm
Greg misses them both, but he got the important 2 points 6 seconds earlier. Hoyas win a nail-biter 46-45.
Difference in this game? Free throws, Temple was only 6-13, with a bunch of misses down the stretch.
November 17th, 2009 at 6:04 pm
On TV, last play looked clean. He sort of put the ball in the chest of Monroe and Thompson?
November 17th, 2009 at 10:17 pm
Yep. Credit to Georgetown for the great defense on the final play.
It’s only our fault we started 1-10, and our foul shooting killed us.
