Lafayette In-Game Thread

By Johnny

Hey everybody, Johnny here at the Phone Booth, an hour away from the start time for this afternoon’s game between the Georgetown Hoyas and the Lafayette Leopards.

It’s Thanksgiving break for the students, so there’s practically no one inside the Verizon Center yet, but with the doors opening right now, I see some people trickling in.

Today’s the first game of a three-game homestand that the Hoyas are expected to sweep before heading on the road for two major opponents. With that said, today’s game is important for the team to get used to the offense and for the underclassmen to gain real game experience.

I’ll be checking in throughout with more info, but for now, here are the refs: Earl Walton, Ray Perone, and Paul Faia.

Comments

  1. Johnny Says:

Scoreboard says these are the starters:
Same 5 for the Hoyas – Wright, Clark, Freeman, Vaughn, and Monroe
For the Leopards – Kari, Gruner, Willen, Benbow, and Mintz

  2. Johnny Says:

Before the anthem, they are having a moment of silence for Abe Pollin who died this week.

  3. Johnny Says:

Fr. McFadden announced the usual, “Please honor our nation and its people as we listen to the National Anthem sung by Dr. Vincent Kelly.”

Then he added “…as Santa Claus.” And sure enough, Dr. Kelly looks a lot like Santa Claus with his new frazzled beard.

  4. Johnny Says:

Benimon is dressed today, so he might see some minutes after sitting out two games.

  5. Zo Says:

I love Mark Tillmon, but in the open on MASN, he said AustinFreeman has been shooting the ball this year exceptionally well. What are his FG% and 3PT% guys? Low I feel like…I’d love to have Mark be right though. Let me know. Thanks, HH. Hoya Saxa

  6. Johnny Says:

    @Zo,
Austin Freeman is 14-28 =50% from the field on the year. He’s 4-10=40% from three. And he’s shooting 100% from the line (6-6).

  7. Johnny Says:

Greg wins the tip, and the Hoyas turn it over on their first possession, get a quick steal back, and then get a basket.

  8. Johnny Says:

Michael Gruner hits a three for Lafayette, 4-3 Hoyas.

  9. Johnny Says:

3 seconds called against the Leopards. I guess the refs want to get in on the action a little too now and then.

  10. Johnny Says:

With a foul on Chris Wright, we head into the 16:00 timeout, Hoyas leading 10-5.

It seems like Georgetown has been pushing the ball a little quicker in transition, but as of yet, the three-ball isn’t falling.

  11. Zo Says:

I LOVE Freeman’s mid range game. LOVE IT. He should only take 2pt jumpers!

  12. Zo Says:

So! Tillmon was right! 50% FG and 40% 3PT is “exceptional” Now about the 100% from the FT line.

  13. Zo Says:

I gotta go guys. Good Luck in the final 36 minutes.

  14. Johnny Says:

Great dish by Monroe to Vaughn under the basket for a dunk.

Julian follows that up with a nice block on the other end.

  15. Johnny Says:

Lafayette takes a timeout, 12-8 Hoyas.

  16. Johnny Says:

Austin Freeman will have a chance to complete a three-point play on the other side of the 12:00 timeout. Austin’s doing well so far; he already has 7 points.

  17. Johnny Says:

Thompson hits the Hoyas’ first three of the night, and it looks like Vee is set to check in at the next whistle

  18. Johnny Says:

Coach calls a timeout, as Lafayette hits another three to make it 20-19 Hoyas. The Leopards are 5-7 from deep.

  19. Johnny Says:

Hollis hits another three. Good to see.

  20. Johnny Says:

Great pass from Monroe for a cutting Wright for two.

  21. Johnny Says:

It’s time for the Jiffy Lube Trivia Question:
Savannah State is coach [sic] by which former Georgetown Basketball player?
    A. Reggie Williams
    B. Michael Jackson
    C. Gene Smith
    D. Horace Broadnax

  22. Johnny Says:

    Yeah, it’s D.

  23. Johnny Says:

    Another three for Hollis – he’s 3 for 3 from 3

  24. Johnny Says:

That looked like the first time that Greg was sure he was going to take it to the basket, and the Leopards had no choice but to flop and hack at him. The foul went against Lafayette, and Greg picked up 2 more points from the line.

  25. Johnny Says:

It’s the four minute timeout, and the Hoyas are winning 40-29 with 2:49 left in the half.

  26. Johnny Says:

The two kids in the Dress Like a Hoya were too small to hit a layup. One kept on missing, and other kid couldn’t get it up near the rim.

  27. Johnny Says:

Wow. Big dunk from Greg and the foul. Nice pass from Clark caught Greg on the baseline; he took one step and slammed it one handed.

  28. Johnny Says:

That’s the end of the first half – Hoyas leading by 14, 45-31.

Overall, it was one of the best all-around performances by Georgetown so far this season. If someone could hit threes besides Hollis, and the team could pick up the defensive effort just a little bit, this would be the Hoyas team the fans want to see.

  29. Johnny Says:

We’re almost ready to start the 2nd half here. Georgetown ball.

  30. Johnny Says:

Vaughn starts the scoring off a Chris Wright assist.

  31. Johnny Says:

Freeman hits a three for the Hoyas, and then Greg goes end to end for two.

  32. Johnny Says:

Timeout Lafayette, after the Hoyas have pushed the lead to 21 – 52-31, with a 7-0 start to the 2nd half.

  33. Johnny Says:

I don’t see how that was a foul on Vaughn. He blocked the shot while standing about a foot away from the guy.

  34. Johnny Says:

Clark joins the Hoyas With a Three Against Lafayette Club. Not very interesting club to be a part of.

  35. Johnny Says:

Clark hits a long two, and Coach calls a quick timeout with the Hoyas up by 21, 59-38.

  36. Johnny Says:

Hollis gets a layup after a Monroe dish, and the Hoyas have 5 players in double digits.

  37. Johnny Says:

Greg drove to the basket and got his dunk blocked by the rim. He got the rebound though and called a timeout laying on the court.

  38. Johnny Says:

Clark has a career-high 17 points. In the Savannah State press conference, Coach said that he’d score more than his previous high, 14, this season.

  39. Johnny Says:

And now Nikita has joined that club with a long name about scoring threes against Lafayette.

  40. Johnny Says:

    Oh, the Lafayette box? Eaten.

  41. Johnny Says:

Nice hustle by Sims keeps the ball on the Hoyas’ end.

  42. Johnny Says:

Mike got on the big board with his sign: http://twitpic.com/rbhwb

  43. Johnny Says:

It’s time for action. The players on the court, the horn went off, but the Verizon Center is still playing “Flash Light”

  44. Johnny Says:

Huge rejection from Sims gets the crowd excited. They keep showing the replay and getting more of a reaction here.

  45. Johnny Says:

Vee hits his first career three as a Hoya, and I guess he joins the club too.

  46. Johnny Says:

Chris Wright’s breakout layup gives the Hoyas a 31 point lead and Lafayette calls timeout.

Career highs for Clark – 19 and Thompson – 16.

  47. Johnny Says:

Oh I guess career high for Sanford too – 3

  48. Johnny Says:

Power move by Vaughn gets him an attempt at a three-point play after the 4:00 timeout.

  49. Johnny Says:

Vaughn misses the first FT of the game for the Hoyas. Now they’re 14-15.

  50. Johnny Says:

Ryan Dougherty is getting his first minutes of the season / his career

  51. Johnny Says:

    Nikita just fouled out.

  52. Johnny Says:

Also first minutes for Stephen Stepka

  53. Johnny Says:

Nice pass from Sanford, and a dunk from Vaughn. It’s just good to see the big men dunking instead of laying it in every time.

  54. Johnny Says:

Vaughn missed another FT, but he’s also got a career-high with 10 points.

  55. Johnny Says:

Julian just cannot hit free throws

  56. Johnny Says:

    There you go, 1-4

  57. Johnny Says:

Stepka hits a long two. Toes on the line.

  58. Johnny Says:

The crowd was going wild, trying to get the Hoyas to 100, but Sanford holds the ball to run out the clock, and the Hoyas win 98-64.
