Hey everybody, Johnny here courtside at Verizon Center for the New Year’s Eve latenight showdown between the Georgetown Hoyas and the St. John’s Red Storm. Jack the Bulldog and his handler are wearing matching tuxedos, and I’m sure we’re going to be seeing a whole bunch of fans in New Year’s attire as well.
This is the Big East opener for both teams, and after two embarrassing defeats to the Red Storm at the end of last season, the Hoyas should have enough motivation to play their best tonight.
Tonight’s refs are going to be Jim Burr, Jeffrey Clark, and Bob Donato. And here are the starting lineups for you:
For the Hoyas, it’s the usual five: Wright, Clark, Freeman, Vaughn, and Monroe
For the Ref Storm, it’s going to be: D.J. Kennedy, Malik Boothe, Sean Evans, Dele Coker, and Paris Horne.
In the Pregame Predictions before the Harvard game, we asked which team would have more shot attempts. The Hoyas were victorious 86-70 and had a whopping 13 more shots than their opponents. Emily was the closest with her guess of six more shots for the Hoyas, so she wins. There was a little controversy this week, as Bryan said “they would have 10 more shot attempts,” but failed to specify who “they” were. So, we have to assume “they” means Harvard and “we” means Georgetown. Sorry, Bryan!
The Hoyas begin Big East play tomorrow against St. John’s. Most Georgetown fans will remember the twodevastating losses to the Red Storm in the span of a week last year that shattered the hopes the Hoyas had for making the NCAA tournament. And those lucky fans who don’t remember must have already blocked those games out of their minds. The Hoyas have a chance to erase the memory of last season’s losses with a strong performance tomorrow.
After Christ Wright’s career high in points last game, we wonder which Hoya will step it up against the Red Storm.
Who will lead the Hoyas in scoring, and how many points will he have?
We think that Greg Monroe will take his first step to claiming Big East Player of the Year honors tomorrow, scoring 22 points in a win. Who do you think will lead the team? Post your guesses.

Wright’s point total was the highest scored by a player in a game under head coach John Thompson III.
It was only the second time since JTIII became the head coach that a player for the Hoyas has scored 30 or more – Jeff Green scored 30 points in the 2007 Big East Semifinal win over Notre Dame.
The 34-point performance is the highest by any Hoya since February 7, 2004 when Gerald Riley put up 37 at home against Miami.
Since 30-point games have been such a rare occurrence lately for the Hoyas, we thought it would be a nice time to look back at the most recent 30-point games. Instead of going back all the way back through the entire history of the Hoyas, we decided to begin with the 1994-95 season. That was the year that Allen Iverson was a freshman.
The new polls were announced yesterday, and Georgetown came in #13 in both rankings. Georgetown was the 5th team from the Big East to make the Top 25, and the other four all made it into the Top 10.
Merry Christmas everybody! In honor of the occasion, we’re providing you with some more footage of the 2001-02 Hoyas doing some Christmas caroling. It’s our present to you.
Georgetown:
Georgetown rebounded nicely from their disappointing loss over the weekend for a solid win over Harvard. The game started out back and forth, but once the Hoyas found their rhythm, they put the game out of reach. An 11-0 run to close out the first half put the Hoyas up 11, and it would never get closer than that.
The Hoyas’ three leaders showed what they were capable of, with Chris Wright, Austin Freeman, and Greg Monroe combining for 71 of Georgetown’s 86 points. It was the first time this season where all three of them had a great game, and when those three are all on, the Hoyas will be tough to beat.
Here’s the audio from yesterday’s press conference after the Harvard victory.
Coach Thompson answers some questions about the game, and then Chris, Austin, and Greg all talk about their career performances.

The Georgetown Hoyas defeated Harvard 86-70 on Christmas Eve eve in their last tune-up before starting conference play. The game was closely contested for most of the first half; every time it looked like Georgetown was pulling away, Harvard answered to keep the score close.
Two back-to-back Georgetown turnovers led to transition Crimson baskets to tie the score at 33 with 3:30 to play in the first half. But the Hoyas closed the half on an 11-0 run to take a 44-33 lead into the break.
