Johnny’s Old Dominion Postgame Thoughts
By JohnnyTeams
Georgetown:
The Hoyas lost their first game of the season, and their second game at McDonough in 27 years – or their second game against Old Dominion at McDonough in 3 years. I don’t know what caused the less-than-stellar performance, but Georgetown did not seem ready to play on Saturday night. The team looked like it was just going through the motions until the end of the second half, when it was just too little too late.
Old Dominion:
Old Dominion is a solid team, and one that Georgoetown would be wise to avoid scheduling games against for the next few years. The CAA is a good league, and the top teams are very competitive. Games against Old Dominion seem to be more important for the Monarchs than they do for the Hoyas, which always leads to trouble.
Players
Georgetown:
Julian Vaughn didn’t have his best performance on Saturday. He committed five turnovers in a game where keeping possession of the ball was one of the major reasons Georgetown lost the game. But looking at the positives, he hit three straight free throws when the Hoyas were trying to claw back in the game, and that’s a marked improvement for a guy who had been shooting less than 36% from the line on the season.
Old Dominion:
The Hoyas were trailing by 11 at halftime, and that deficit was largely due to the first half performance of Ben Finney. Finney shot 4-5 in the first half including two threes for 10 points. He also had four assists and two steals in the opening 20 minutes. When it was freezing outside and the weather prohibited lots of people from coming to the game, Finney was heating it up inside McDonough.
Fans
GUHoyas.com and the Hoya Hoop Club advised against traveling to the game because of the snow, but there were enough leftover students and locals to fill McDonough. The fans showed up, which is more than can be said about the team.
Number of the Game
18: Largest Old Dominion lead. Before this game, the largest deficit the Hoyas faced was down by seven against Savannah State. After that, the Hoyas went on a 7-0 run and took over the game. No such look against the Monarchs.
MASN
Despite having a press pass set aside for me at McDonough, I was one of the many Hoya Faithful who were kept out by the snow. I was forced to watch the game on MASN, and while it was nice to have that option, the television feed was subpar. And when the video kicked out for several minutes, commentators Dave Feldman and Mark Tillmon didn’t swtich to describing the play like radio announcers but just kept on acting as if we could see the action.
