Mike’s Harvard Postgame Thoughts
By MikeTeams
Georgetown:
Georgetown rebounded nicely from their disappointing loss over the weekend for a solid win over Harvard. The game started out back and forth, but once the Hoyas found their rhythm, they put the game out of reach. An 11-0 run to close out the first half put the Hoyas up 11, and it would never get closer than that.
The Hoyas’ three leaders showed what they were capable of, with Chris Wright, Austin Freeman, and Greg Monroe combining for 71 of Georgetown’s 86 points. It was the first time this season where all three of them had a great game, and when those three are all on, the Hoyas will be tough to beat.
Harvard:
The Crimson were outmatched, but they did a good job of keeping the game close in the first half. Georgetown had a few opportunities to break it open early on, but Harvard got an opportune steal or three pointer to stay in it. In the end, though, they were not able to compete with the Hoyas for the full 40 minutes.
Players
Georgetown:
Chris Wright had a career day, scoring 34 points to set a record under Coach Thompson. He also contributed six rebounds, six steals, and four assists, and shot 62% from the field. The only blight on his performance was his four turnovers. Turnovers have been a problem for Chris all year. With Big East play on the horizon, he needs to start talking better care of the ball.
Harvard:
Jeremy Lin, Harvard’s leading scorer coming into the game, had 15 points on 6-10 shooting. He did a very good job of getting to the basket and converting with players in his face. However, he only had ten shots and had turnover problems of his own, and with no real scoring support behind him, he was unable to be very effective.
Fans
With this game scheduled for noon on a workday during Christmas break, it’s not surprising that the arena looked empty. There was a small contingent of Georgetown students in a noticeably small section of seats courtside. They tried nobly to make noise, but in the more than half empty arena, their cheers echoed more than intimidated. But, it’s always good to see students at games during winter break. The real test will be how many come out for an 8 PM game on New Year’s Eve.
Number of the Game
2: Hoyas to score 30 or more points under Coach Thompson. With the revised Princeton Offense which the team runs, it’s rare that one player would get enough shots to score 30 points. Chris Wright joins Jeff Green as the only other Hoya under JTIII to reach the 30 point mark. Green achieved the feat in the Big East Tournament semifinals against Notre Dame.
Rest vs. Rust
The Hoyas now have an entire week off before taking on St. John’s in the Big East season opener on New Year’s Eve. This marks the second full week off for the Hoyas this month. After the first week off, the Hoyas laid an egg against Old Dominion. We’ll have to wait and see how the Hoyas fare after this upcoming week of rest before entering conference play.
