Rutgers In-Game Thread
By JohnnyJohnny here courtside at the Phone Booth 45 minutes away from tipoff between the Georgetown Hoyas and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.
The Hoyas are coming off of a two-game road trip in which the Hoyas split against higher ranked opponents, most recently defeating Pittsburgh at the Petersen Events Center.
Rutgers, meanwhile have struggled in the Big East season, losing six straight games and still winless in the conference. To many, this has trap game for the Hoyas written all over it.
I’l be checking back in with more info as we go, but for now –
Refs are Tim Clougherty, Ed Corbett, and Bernard Clinton.

Oh, and the reason I don’t have any starting lineup info yet is because the scoreboard here at Verizon Center is acting up.
When I first arrived all the screens were showing a Windows startup screen, and then it showed this:

And now it’s blank.

StatsMan came up for me on press row though:
Same five for the Hoyas – Wright, Clark, Freeman, Vaughn, and Monroe
Rosario, Ndiaye, Beatty, Miller, and Mitchell for the Scarlet Knights.

Referees: Tim Clougherty, Ed Corbett (first time at Verizon this year) and Bernard Clinton

If you could get the game to start four minutes early, it would get “The Fred Hill Show” off my TV – something I would greatly appreciate!

National Anthem’s done and a lot of the screens here are not working. The big screen is but not the area above which shows the clock and score. The four corner screens that show out of town scores are out and the entire sideline marquees are dead.
The two endzones do have the score, time, team and fouls.
January 23rd, 2010 at 12:03 pm
The Fred Hill Show sounds a lot less entertaining than The Benny Hill Show. And that’s saying something.
January 23rd, 2010 at 12:04 pm
I muted it, so I can only dream that both use “Yaketty Sax” as their theme.
Gametime!

Vaughn wins the tip and the Hoyas get a basket from Monroe on the first possession.
January 23rd, 2010 at 12:05 pm
N’Diaye gets a dunk going the other way, and it’s 2-2 early on.
January 23rd, 2010 at 12:09 pm
I know Clark missed the layup, but the diagonal feed from Freeman earned an involuntary “oh my goodness” from me.
it appears that defense is optional today.
January 23rd, 2010 at 12:11 pm
They must have ruled no shot on that play a while back, when it looked like the Hoyas blocked a shot and knocked it off of Rutgers.
Says here that Rutgers is 4-4 from the field. Hoyas are 6-9.
January 23rd, 2010 at 12:12 pm
Ooh the scoreboard now is flickering blue, red green, yellow and black.
January 23rd, 2010 at 12:13 pm
They incorrectly announced that that foul was on Wright, it was indeed Clark.
Greg know has 10 points, less than five minutes in.
January 23rd, 2010 at 12:15 pm
2 FTs for Vaughn and he gets replaced for Benimon.
January 23rd, 2010 at 12:15 pm
Now the endzone scoreboards have the wrong score and a stopped clock.
January 23rd, 2010 at 12:16 pm
Nice fast break led by Wright and Freeman, and the Hoyas are up by five.
January 23rd, 2010 at 12:17 pm
Fr. McFadden is having trouble now. He’s miscalled all the fouls on Georgetown and he’s been having to announce the score after each basket.
Now they’ve put up the score on top of the video on the main screen.
January 23rd, 2010 at 12:20 pm
At the 12:00 timeout, a lot of fans are probably wondering the score.
Hoyas are up 22-14, it will be their ball under the basket after the break, even though it looked like Austin Freeman touched it last.
January 23rd, 2010 at 12:26 pm
Clark checks back in, gets four quick points, and Fred Hill calls a timeout. Hoyas up 29-14.

Jiffy Lube Trivia Question:

B. Kevin Braswell
C. Mike Sweetney
D. Victor Page
January 23rd, 2010 at 12:44 pm
That was Greg’s first shot in 14 minutes. He’s now 6-6.
January 23rd, 2010 at 12:45 pm
And that was Chris’s first missed 3-pointer.
January 23rd, 2010 at 12:46 pm
After a Rutgers shotclock violation, the Hoyas will have 8.5 seconds before halftime for one last play. JTIII used his 1st half timeout to talk it over.
January 23rd, 2010 at 12:47 pm
Freeman ends the half with a three-pointer and the Hoyas lead 46-29 at the break.
January 23rd, 2010 at 12:51 pm
That’s how you mismanage the final minute and change of a half!
Don’t check Freeman on a drive and dish to Monroe +
Miss a wild layup early in the shot clock +
Miss a step-back three with :28 on the shot clock +
Shot clock violation +
Freeman handoff three =
The difference between being down 10 and being down 17.
January 23rd, 2010 at 1:04 pm
Vaughn starts the second half scoring, then Clark adds a three, and it’s 51-29.
January 23rd, 2010 at 1:07 pm
8-0 run for the Scarlet Knights means GU timeout. Hoyas still up 53-37.
January 23rd, 2010 at 1:12 pm
Greg just grabbed rebound #10 for his 8th double-double of the season.
January 23rd, 2010 at 1:14 pm
That putback was Greg’s first miss of the game.
He’s now 8-9 with 1 three for 17pts, 11 rebounds, and 4 assists.
January 23rd, 2010 at 1:48 pm
88 points matches the most in a regulation Big East game by a John Thompson III-coached team.
January 23rd, 2010 at 1:51 pm
That’ll do it. A lot of minutes for the reserves, and Hoyas win 88-63.
