Johnny’s Rutgers Postgame Thoughts
By JohnnyTeams
Georgetown:
The Hoyas put together another solid performance and proved way too much for Rutgers to handle. The Hoyas started out strong, got out to a lead, and never looked back.
It’s probably unreasonable to expect this type of offensive production much more throughout the season, but if Georgetown can shoot nearly as good as they did on Saturday, they will be a very difficult team to beat.
Rutgers:
Rutgers is a struggling team in the country’s toughest conference. Their run and gun style doesn’t lead to close games when they’re doing it well, and it doesn’t lead to close games when they’re missing their shots and committing turnovers either.
Players
Georgetown:
Everyone came into this season (and actually last season as well) talking about Greg Monroe. Monroe’s going to be a beast, no one will be able to stop him, he’ll carry this Hoya team on his shoulders.
He showed that he could do that at Villanova, but against Rutgers, he made it look effortless. His line was impressive – 21 points on 10 of 12 shooting, 14 rebounds, 7 assists, 1 block, and 1 steal – but it was the manner in which he did it that really stood out.
He converted on his post moves without resorting to grabbing his own rebound and putting it back in. He hit his jumpshots – both from midrange and three-point land. He was assertive on the glass, both offensively and defensively. And once he drew coverage, he found the open man to knock down threes. The system was working perfectly, and that was all thanks to Greg’s perfect execution.
Rutgers:
Mike Rosario is Rutgers’ go-to guy, and yet again Georgetown found a way to shut down the opposition’s number one threat. With Rosario struggling, it was Jonathan Mitchell who came up big for the Scarlet Knights, putting up 21 points and hitting 5 of his 8 three-point attempts. It was never going to be enough in this one, but Rutgers must be glad to see the transfer from Florida filling it up.
Fans
The fans at Verizon Center were loud and great as usual. But I got one other thing to say about them.
The fans sure love Henry Sims. When he was set to check in for the first time, the student section behind me got very loud, and when he came in and scored those three-point play opportunities, the place went nuts.
In the postgame press conference, nothing was made of it, as Greg said:
Today, they left him open a couple times, he finished at the rim, that’s basically it – nothing special. He’s very important just like everybody else on the team.
But his role may be more than that if he can energize the team as much as he does the Hoya faithful.
Number of the Game
76: That’s the Hoyas’ field goal percentage in the second half until the last few minutes. The Hoyas made 16 of their 24 shot attempts in the second half, but they missed on the last three when the game was already decided. To be fair, the 16 made baskets could be said to have been made when the game was already decided.
DC Lottery T-Shirts
I mentioned the ridiculous introduction to the Gatling Gun at the Seton Hall game:
Ladies and gentlemen, for the thousands here at the Verizon Center, and the millions watching at home, it’s time for some T-Shirts!
Well, they said it again on Saturday, but this time they didn’t call it “The DC Lottery Gatling Gun.” They called it something like “The DC Lottery T-Shirt Launcher” or something.
I guess they don’t want to associate the words “gun” and “Verizon Center” any more than they already are.
