Rutgers In-Game Thread
By JohnnyHey everyone, Johnny here from the RAC in New Jersey, getting ready for the Big East Battle between the Georgetown Hoyas and Rutgers Scarlet Knights. It’s Valentine’s Day, possibly the only day of the year when Scarlet Knights seems like an appropriate team mascot, so maybe the 2-9 guys from Jersey can upset the #7 Hoyas.
We’re still about half an hour away from tipoff, and the scoreboard here that shows the players’ foul and point totals currently lists the Hoyas’ starting lineup as Hollis Thompson, Chris Wright, Vee Sanford, Ryan Dougherty, and Jason Clark. A little wishful thinking from Rutgers, I think, since Austin Freeman, Julian Vaughn, and Greg Monroe are all here, dressed, and running layup lines.
When I get some real information for you, I’ll post it here.

Piscataway, we have a problem. MASN’s 2pm game is not going to end in time for the Hoyas tip-off. “MASN is the official network of the Hoyas”…what does that even mean? All they do is show our games that are on the BIG EAST network. I guess MASN is also the official network of Elon and Liberty Basketball.

There are a lot of Hoya fans here with 10 minutes to go til tipoff. Besides the current students and New Jersey based Georgetown alums, Patrick Ewing Jr. is in the building.
February 14th, 2010 at 4:01 pm
Starters for the Hoyas are the usual five:
Wright, Clark, Freeman, Monroe, and Vaughn.
February 14th, 2010 at 4:02 pm
Rutgers is starting Mike Rosario, James Beatty, Dane Miller, Jonathan Mitchell, and Hamady Ndiaye.
February 14th, 2010 at 4:02 pm
Our referees are Tony Greene, Bernard Clinton and Doug Sirmons. Tony’s fresh off of his game last night in Kentucky vs Tennessee.
February 14th, 2010 at 4:03 pm
And I can see you directly across the way from me! Oh my.
February 14th, 2010 at 4:04 pm
The refs are Bernard Clinton, Tony Greene, and a guy I can’t recognize from here.
February 14th, 2010 at 4:04 pm
Thanks Evan, Doug Sirmons.
February 14th, 2010 at 4:05 pm
Hoyas win the tip, and Greg misses from in the paint on the first possesion.
February 14th, 2010 at 4:05 pm
Long two from Rosario starts the scoring, and Julian Vaughn converts on the other end to tie it up.
February 14th, 2010 at 4:09 pm
Offensive foul on Freeman takes away two points for the Hoyas. Georgetown still trails 4-7.
February 14th, 2010 at 4:10 pm
Another offensive foul – this one a moving screen on Vaughn.
February 14th, 2010 at 4:11 pm
Nice play by Monroe, driving to the basket, but instead of shooting a contested layup, he floated it back to Julian for two.
February 14th, 2010 at 4:12 pm
A three from Greg ties up the game at 9.
February 14th, 2010 at 4:14 pm
After two consecutive turnovers trying to feed Julian in the post, Coach calls a 30 second timeout. However, the next whistle will be the 16:00 timeout, and quite possibly the following whistle will be the 12:00 timeout.
13:03 left in the half, Hoyas down by one, 12-13.
February 14th, 2010 at 4:16 pm
Yeah, with 11:42 left in the first half, we’re at the 16:00 timeout.
February 14th, 2010 at 4:17 pm
Hoya fans in DC have to sit through a Verizon commercial before joining the MASN coverage, only to find the the game going into a timeout.
February 14th, 2010 at 4:19 pm
A day after Nate Robinson wins his third Dunk Competition, some tiny kids here at the RAC are putting on their own dunk competition here at the timeout.
February 14th, 2010 at 4:23 pm
Ndiaye just picked up his second foul, and he gets subbed out.
February 14th, 2010 at 4:24 pm
Now Austin Freeman has two personals.
February 14th, 2010 at 4:30 pm
Hollis banks home a three to give the Hoyas a two point lead after recently trailing by as many as six.
February 14th, 2010 at 4:31 pm
Greg takes it strong to the hoop to put the Hoyas up two, 28-26, and Coach Thompson uses his second timeout of the first half.
February 14th, 2010 at 4:35 pm
The Hoyas sloppy with the ball at the top of the key. That will always lead to points for the opponent, even if they miss the first layup. And the second.
February 14th, 2010 at 4:44 pm
Benimon hits a long two, but the refs give him three points. His right foot was way over the three point line.
February 14th, 2010 at 4:44 pm
Rutgers has been using a lot of shot clock on the past few possessions. This is the end of the first half, not the game, I don’t know if Rutgers will survive playing this style.
February 14th, 2010 at 4:45 pm
Now Rutgers coach Fred Hill has complained enough, they’re going to watch the monitors to see if it was really a three – which it wasn’t.
February 14th, 2010 at 4:46 pm
The refs have no confirmed that it was actually a two-pointer. Thing is, time has run off the clock. I’m not sure if they’re really allowed to review that one.
February 14th, 2010 at 4:47 pm
That ends the half. Hoyas trail by one point, 32-33.
February 14th, 2010 at 5:06 pm
Eight points for Jonathan Mitchell helps give Rutgers a good start to the second half
February 14th, 2010 at 5:15 pm
There is no foul. That was one of the cleanest blocks I’ve seen in a long time.
February 14th, 2010 at 5:16 pm
Hoyas down by four, 42-46, and Rutgers calls a timeout. First timeout of the second half means it’s extended to a full.
February 14th, 2010 at 5:25 pm
Three point play for Greg with the shotclock winding down ties the game up at 47.
February 14th, 2010 at 5:26 pm
And a Hollis Thompson putback gives the Hoyas their first lead of the second half.
February 14th, 2010 at 5:27 pm
Freeman’s jumper is a little off today.
February 14th, 2010 at 5:27 pm
Wright has to make his free throws if he’s gonna try to draw the foul on the fast break. Two big misses there for Chris.
February 14th, 2010 at 5:32 pm
Great hustle by Austin Freeman to dive on the floor, shield the ball, and call a timeout. Hoyas down by five with a little less than nine minutes to play.
February 14th, 2010 at 5:33 pm
Jason Clark just picked up an offensive foul. His third personal. The Hoyas only committed three fouls in all of the first half.
February 14th, 2010 at 5:36 pm
No one having a good shooting day for the Hoyas. Someone is going to have to step up, only 7:30 left in this one and the Hoyas still down.
February 14th, 2010 at 5:43 pm
Greg is having his way down low, but with little help from the outside, the Hoyas need to make sure they do their work on defense. Georgetown trails by three with under five minutes to play.
February 14th, 2010 at 5:49 pm
Clark and Rosario collide – Jason’s fourth foul. They both get up slowly.
February 14th, 2010 at 5:51 pm
30-second timeout by Rutgers. Hoyas still down by one, Rutgers ball, 2:10 remaining in the game.
February 14th, 2010 at 5:55 pm
Greg Monroe draws a charge on a Dane Miller pass. Rosario scored a layup, but it was waved off because of the charge. Hoyas ball down by one with 1:09 to play.
February 14th, 2010 at 5:55 pm
Greg scores in the post. Hoyas up by one 66-65 with 49.4 seconds to play. Rutgers timeout.
February 14th, 2010 at 5:58 pm
Dane Miller gets an offensive rebound to put the Scarlet Knights up by one, and then Chris Wright misses a three on the other end. 10.1, remaining Rutgers shooting 2 shots.
February 14th, 2010 at 6:00 pm
Miller hits both shots, Hoyas down by three, and Coach Thompson calls a timeout.
Georgetown has 10 seconds to make up three points, and the outside shooting has been abysmal today. Georgetown is in need of something special now.
February 14th, 2010 at 6:01 pm
The Hoyas are in big trouble here. They haven’t hit a three pointer in this half, I don’t think, and Chris Wright just had a wide open look that he missed badly. I don’t think there’s time to go for two, so you have to take the three in my opinion. We’ll see what happens.
February 14th, 2010 at 6:02 pm
Hoyas beat the Rutgers press in a hurry, and Austin is fouled. After the foul, he knocks down a three which doesn’t count.
February 14th, 2010 at 6:03 pm
Austin hits both free throws, and Rutgers calls timeout. There are only 5.7 seconds left and Georgetown still trails by one.
February 14th, 2010 at 6:05 pm
Mitchell hits both, Hoyas down three again.
February 14th, 2010 at 6:05 pm
Austin Freeman misses a three at the buzzer, and the Hoyas lose 68-71.
