Notre Dame In-Game Thread
By JohnnyHey everyone, Johnny here at Verizon Center, less than an hour away from tipoff between the Georgetown Hoyas and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The Irish are coming off a win against Pittsburgh, but they are still expected to be without 2008 Big East Player of the Year Luke Harangody, who is suffering from a deep bone bruise that he received in his right knee against Seton Hall. Harangody was warming up with his team, but he’s not listed as a starter, so he may play in this one, but right now it seems unlikely.
The Hoyas just headed back to the locker room after some warmups. On the way, a bunch of players headed into the student section to high five the fans. Georgetown will not be wearing their usual home gray today. They are sporting white warmups, and their uniforms will be silver in honor of the 25th anniversary of the Jordan brand. Here’s a photo of the unis: Silver Uniform.
I’ll be checking back with more info, but for now, the starters:
Hoyas starting the usual five: Wright, Clark, Freeman, Vaughn, and Monroe.
Update: Hoyas starting Wright, Clark, Vaughn, and Monroe.
Austin Freeman is on the bench with the trainer, as Hollis Thompson gets the start.
Irish will be starting Nash, Jackson, Abromaitis, Hansbrough, and Scott.
The refs today are Jim Burr, Gene Steratore, and Pat Driscoll.

We can wear pink…as long as we win!

Harangody is now in street clothes. Either he changed, or I was wrong before, he was never in warmups, and I got him confused with one of his seven Notre Dame doppelgangers.

The Pep Band just played “You Dropped a Bomb on Me” but with these silver and white, high collared warmups, the Hoyas look more like Parliament than the Gap Band.

Update: Hollis Thompson starting in place of Austin Freeman. Austin just headed off the court with Lorry Michel the team trainer.

Hoyas lose the tip but get a stop, and Hollis scores on the other end.

Three three-pointers have pushed the Irish up to an 11-4 lead, and Coach Thompson calls timeout.

Why the heck is Freeman on the bench…and why doesn’t anyone know why?
February 27th, 2010 at 12:18 pm
Benimon first Hoya off the bench. But Austin has just taken off his warmup to enter the game net.

@Bobby,
Austin was listed as a starter, so it seems it was a last minute decision. He’s set to check in, so we can find out more about it after the game.

Justin, a student, just knocked down all three shots for the Verizon Triple Play, and he walks off the court with $325 dollars in cash and a standing ovation.

The Hoyas are doing a great job on defense, but they aren’t securing the rebounds, and Notre Dame is scoring on second or third opportunities.

Chris Wright urging the crowd on as the Hoyas play defense down two with under a minute in the first half.

The Hoyas got that stop, didn’t convert on the other end, and Tim Abromaitis got a layup to put the Irish up four.
Hoyas down 27-31 at the half.

Ben Hansbrough has all ten points for the Irish to start the half, and the Hoyas call a quick timeout, now down by 11, 30-41.
February 27th, 2010 at 1:17 pm
Austin Freeman just got his first points of the game.

Jason Clark had been on the sideline working with Lorry Michel by the Gatorade Cooler. Now they’ve headed to the locker room. I thought he had a bloody nose at first – maybe it’s a cut in his mouth?
February 27th, 2010 at 1:23 pm
Now he’s back in the team huddle, and Lorry is cleaning his jersey off.
February 27th, 2010 at 1:23 pm
And now, Jason’s back in the game. Nice work by the Hoya training staff.
February 27th, 2010 at 1:27 pm
Georgetown cut the lead from 12 to 7, and the Hoya faithful stood up to get the team excited for defense.
Notre Dame needed a timeout after the Hoyas trapped them near midcourt.
February 27th, 2010 at 1:28 pm
After the 30-second timeout, the crowd was still excited, and the Hoyas forced a shot-clock violation.
February 27th, 2010 at 1:35 pm
Tory Jackson just hit a three, Notre Dame’s first points in over 5 minutes.
February 27th, 2010 at 1:59 pm
Hoyas have called off the dogs, and they’re gonna lose their fourth home game of the season.
February 27th, 2010 at 1:59 pm
Chris Wright gets to ten points with a meaningless basket at the end. Hoyas lose 64-78.
