Abraham Verbally Commits to Georgetown

By Hoya Hoops

Nigerian-born Moses Abraham verbally committed to play basketball for the Hoyas today, according to the Washington Post.

Both Georgetown and the University of Maryland were competing for the 6-9 center/power forward, who chose Georgetown shortly after a conversation with both father and son Coach Thompson’s. Abraham now joins Nate Lubick, Markel Starks, and Aaron Bowen in the Hoyas’ class of 2014.

Johnny’s Ohio Postgame Thoughts

Georgetown:
Ever since the arrival of Coach John Thompson III, the media has focused on Georgetown’s version of the Princeton Offense. In this one, it was Georgetown’s defense that stuck out as the Hoyas were incapable of stopping hot three-point shooting by an Ohio side playing the game of their lives.

Not being able to beat the Bobcats’ screens to defend the outside shot and not securing defensive rebounds allowed Ohio to score more points on Georgetown than any other team in a regulation postseason game.

Men Fall, Women Advance

By Hoya Hoops
  • The Georgetown Hoyas fell in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, losing to the Ohio Bobcats 83-97. It was the first time that Georgetown has lost in their first game of the tournament since 1997 when the Hoyas were defeated by UNC-Charlotte.
  • Meanwhile, in their first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1993, the Lady Hoyas defeated Marist in their opening round game. They advance to the Round of 32 where they will meet Baylor tonight at 10:05pm.
  • In the 2010 NCAA Pick 8, a lot of people are struggling due to Georgetown and Kansas’ early exits, but here are the leaders: lin and Will F are sharing the top spot with a record of 11-3 and GKiely is right behind them with this teams going 10-3 so far.

St. Patrick’s Day

By Hoya Hoops

Yesterday was St. Patrick’s Day, and instead of wearing green and feeling too much like Notre Dame fans, we decided to celebrate more like Hoyas would.

Each year, on March 17, we at Hoya Hoops honor Georgetown’s very own St. Patrick.

It turns out that this year, Sports Illustrated had the same idea: Honoring Ewing on St. Patrick’s Day

NCAA Tournament Veterans

By Hoya Hoops

Before the Big East Tournament Championship, we asked everybody how many points Austin Freeman would score. He put up 14 points, which means Julien from France was the closest, so he wins the 2 points for the postseason Pregame Predictions.

The Pregame Predictions competition is still in effect, and as of now, here’s the leaderboard:

Winner # of Wins
Zo 8
Bob from Columbia 7
Emily 5
Julien from France 4
Bobby in Tennessee 3
DBeck 2
Hoyasincebirth 2
Hoya Hoops 2
Let’s Go Hoyas 2
Missy 1

Remember, postseason predictions count double, so keep that in mind as we continue. Now on to this week’s game.

Believe it or not, the Hoyas only have two players on the roster with any NCAA Tournament experience – Chris Wright and Austin Freeman. Everyone else who played in Raleigh in 2008 has graduated, transferred, or headed for the NBA. So here’s our question as the Hoyas set to face off against Ohio in the Opening Round of the tourney.

How many points will Austin Freeman and Chris Wright score against Ohio, and who will have more?

We’re going to say that Chris will lead the way with 18 and combined they’ll have 34. What do you think?

13 Big East Teams in Postseason

By Hoya Hoops

An astonishing 13 out of 16 teams from the Big East made it into the top two postseason tournaments. Here’s a breakdown of the Big East in March Madness.

  • Eight teams from the Big East conference have made it into the Big Dance. Syracuse was named a #1 seed, Villanova and West Virginia are #2 seeds, Georgetown and Pitt are #3s, Marquette and Notre Dame are #6s, and Louisville is a #9 seed.
  • Tomorrow, Notre Dame, Villanova, Marquette, and Georgetown all play their first games of the tournament. The Hoyas face Ohio at 7:25pm.
  • Five more teams from the Big East went to the NIT, and three of those teams were in action last night.
  • UCONN snuck by Northeastern in the opening round of the NIT, beating out the other Huskies 59-57 in the #4 – #5 game in Hartford.
  • North Carolina State upset the USF Bulls 58-57 in the #3 – #6 game. Dominique Jones had a chance to win it with 9 seconds remaining, but he opted to pass and the Bulls did not get a good last shot.
  • Finally, Seton Hall got blown out of their own gym 87-69 by the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The Pirates’ leading rebounder Herb Pope got ejected from the game in the first half for intentionally hitting Texas Tech’s Darko Cohadarevic in the groin.

2010 NCAA Pick 8

By Hoya Hoops

Filled Out BracketLove college basketball?

Bored with the same old bracket?

Tired of annoying co-workers thinking they know more about basketball than you because they correctly picked some obscure upset that has no relevance to the tournament?

If so, we present “An Intelligent Alternative” to the boring bracket. This game is a better way to show if you know your stuff, and it takes much less time to do. We call it the NCAA Pick 8.

Here’s how you play. You pick 8 teams. We total up the winning percentage of your eight teams combined. Whoever has the highest winning percentage is the Champion and wins a T-shirt.

WAIT…there is one catch about your 8 teams. This is the only rule, but it is important: You can only choose one team of each seed!

For example, you can only have one #1 seed, and only one #2 seed. You do not need to have seeds 1-8; feel free to choose a #9 seed or a #10 seed, or even a #16 if you’re feeling lucky. But you can only choose one team of each seed!

So go at it! Enter your 8 teams in the comments area and good luck.

Tiebreaker: In case two or more contestants finish with the same winning percentage, select one player (any player in the tournament) who you think will score the most total points in the NCAA Tournament. The selected player with the most points will be the determining factor in case of a tie.

Our picks are after the jump. More »
