Tony’s West Virginia Postgame Thoughts

By Tony

Teams

Georgetown:
This one is going to sting for a while. Everything was on the line, and the Hoyas played pretty well.

They started sharp and took an early lead. Georgetown had a little trouble during the middle portion of the game when West Virginia cranked up their defense, but the Hoyas were the sharper team down the stretch, and played tough defense to close out the game. Unfortunately, West Virginia’s combination of big shots by Da’Sean Butler and perfect free throw shooting in the final sealed the Hoyas’ defeat.

It was an effort to be proud of for the Hoyas, which is very little consolation.

Hoyas in the Region of Death

By Hoya Hoops

Last night was Selection Sunday, and we got our first look at the 2010 NCAA Tournament Bracket.

The good news?
Georgetown earned a #3 spot in the tournament.

The bad news?
They are in the toughest region in recent memory and could face this road to the Final Four:

  • The Champions of the MAC, the Ohio Bobcats.
  • The best #6 seed in the tournament, the Tennessee Volunteers who’ve already beaten #1 Kansas and #2 Kentucky this season.
  • The Ohio State Buckeyes, a #2 seed that had been in the discussion for a #1 just a few days ago.
  • The #1 overall seed Kansas Jayhawks.

Midwest Region

But the Hoyas have to take it one game at a time.

First up is the #14 seed Ohio. Georgetown will take on the Bobcats in Dunkin’ Donuts Arena in Providence, RI at 7:25 on Thursday night.

West Virginia Postgame Press Conference

By Johnny

The Hoyas couldn’t finalize the comeback in the Big East Tournament Championship, and after losing the game with under five seconds to play, the team was extremely disappointed. Here’s the press conference:

West Virginia Recap

By Hoya Hoops

The Georgetown Hoyas came up 2 points short in their quest for their 8th Big East Tournament Championship.

With the score tied, West Virginia’s Da’Sean Butler scored a short jumper in the lane with 4.2 seconds left to put the Mountaineers up by 2. Chris Wright drove the length of the floor and had a sprawling layup deflected as the buzzer sounded to give West Virginia their first Big East Championship since joining the league back in the 1995-96 season. West Virginia led for most of the game, extending their advantage to 9 points in the second half, but the Hoyas rallied and managed to tie the score in the final minutes on a three-pointer from Austin Freeman. West Virginia made two free throws in the final minute, before Wright’s spinning layup tied the score again, setting up the final possession for the Mountaineers.

West Virginia In-Game Thread

By Johnny

Hey everybody, Johnny here at Madison Square Garden, one hour away from the Big East Tournament Championship game between the Georgetown Hoyas and West Virginia Mountaineers.

The Hoyas entered the tournament as the #8 seed and proceeded to beat the #9 South Florida Bulls, the #1 Syracuse Orange, and the #5 Marquette Golden Eagles.

West Virginia on the other hand came in ranked #3 in the conference, earning them two byes, and they went on to beat #11 Cincinnati and #7 Notre Dame.

The Hoyas have looked very good throughout the whole tournament, winning their games by an average of over 16 points, while the Mountaineers have come away with close victories, beating the Bearcats by a buzzer-beating banked three pointer to avoid overtime, and sneaking by Notre Dame by two with the Irish missing a three-pointer to win it.

This will be the second meeting between the teams in less than two weeks, but in the last game, the Hoyas were without leading scorer Austin Freeman. The stakes are higher, the players are ready, and this game should be a completely different story.

The crew here at MSG are having some trouble with their wireless internet in the arena, so I may not be able to post too much info when I get to my seat, but here in the media room, I’m good to go. I’ll be updating via my phone as much as possible, and if I get the internet working on my laptop, I’ll be adding content there too.

Either way, check back postgame for the audio and box score, which I will hopefully be able to get out quicker than most.

Johnny’s Marquette Postgame Thoughts

By Johnny

Teams

Georgetown:
The Hoyas defeated the Golden Eagles in dramatic fashion on Friday, but it wasn’t even close to Georgetown’s best performance of the year. The three-point shot wasn’t falling, and they let Marquette close the gap early in the game. What was excellent for the Hoyas was their energy – focusing on getting rebounds and loose balls, fighting on defense for blocked shots, and being aggressive on offense.

Austin in the Championship

By Hoya Hoops

Before the Hoyas took on Marquette in the Big East Tournament semifinals, we asked everyone how many threes Georgetown would score. Everyone went over with their guesses because the Hoyas only connected on 6 of 12 from downtown, but Bob from Columbia was closest, so he get 2 steps closer to winning the Pregame Predictions title.

As the Big East prepares for its Championship matchup tonight, we look back to the last time these two teams met up, earlier this month. It was the only game all season in which leading scorer Austin Freeman did not play as he was back at Georgetown Hospital.

The Hoyas are a different team without Free, so here’s our question leading up to the big game:

How many points will Austin Freeman score?

We’ll say that Austin gets out of his little three-point slump and go for 22 points tonight. What do you think?

Marquette Recap

By Hoya Hoops

For the third time in four years, the Georgetown Hoyas will be playing in the Big East Championship game. Georgetown put together another solid performance in New York, dismantling the 5th seeded Marquette Golden Eagles 80-57 in front of a sellout crowd at Madison Square Garden.
