GUHoyas has just announced that Greg Monroe will not be returning to Georgetown next season, as he will be entering his name into the NBA Draft and signing an agent.
“It was mentally what I wanted to do,” Monroe said. “I feel like I’m ready to make this step after working with our coaches for two years. I’ve enjoyed being able to represent Georgetown. I’ve enjoyed my experience and while I am leaving campus, I still will always be part of Georgetown.”
As always, the analysis comes from a Georgetown perspective.
The Hoyas
Markel Starks looked pretty good. He won the MVP award, but that was probably because his team came out on top. Win or lose, he was the best guard on the floor. Starks was very strong in the open court, and he also knocked down a pair of three-pointers. I also enjoyed the way he played – even though it was an All-Star game, he tried to spread the ball around. And he was one of the few guards that seemed interested in playing defense.
Including the three players from the 2010 game, 36 Hoyas have played in the Capital Classic.
Markel Starks’ performance is tied for the second highest output by a future Hoya in the Cap Classic. Patrick Ewing and Mark Tillmon each also scored 18 points, so the young Mr. Starks is in pretty good company. Victor Page put up 22 points in 1994, which is still the Hoya record.
Below is a list of the Hoyas to play in the prestigious event, and their point total, some of which will surprise you.

The 37th Annual Capital Classic took place at American University’s Bender Arena last night. For nearly four decades, this High-School All-Star game has included some of the best local players from the D.C. Metro Area as well as some of the greatest players that have ever played basketball.
In the most recent edition, the Capital All-Stars defeated the U.S. All-Stars 117-108. Markel Starks, who will be playing for Georgetown in the fall, was named the game’s most valuable player.
Today, Georgetown announced that it has named Lee Reed as the new Director of Athletics.
Reed arrives at the hilltop after being Cleveland State University’s A.D. since 2002. He replaces Daniel R. Porterfield, Ph.D. who served as the interim director of athletics this past season.
From the press release:
“Lee is committed to educational excellence and competitive success and I am confident that with his leadership we will continue to recruit and support first-rate coaches and student-athletes who maintain the University’s tradition of academic and athletic success,” Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia said. “This has been a thorough search process and we look forward to the contributions he will make to our athletics program and the lives of our student-athletes.”
Mark D won Hoya Hoops’ inaugural NCAA Pick 8 with his selection of Duke, West Virginia, Baylor, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Marquette, Richmond, and Gonzaga. Those teams went 19-7 for a 73.1% winning percentage, earning Mark the coveted Hoya Hoops T-shirt as well as the eternal glory that comes with winning the first Pick 8.
GKiely, big A, lin, Will F, Drew, and LCPolo18 all tied for second place with 63.6% as all of those participants picked 14 wins but no National Champion.
So congratulations Mark D, and like we asked Zo the Pregame Predictions champion, please contact us at hoyahoops@hoyahoops.com so we can get your contact info and shirt size to send you your prize.
