The Georgetown Hoyas, in their first game against a nationally ranked opponent, defeated the Missouri Tigers 111-102 in overtime. In a hard-fought battle in which the Hoyas committed 17 turnovers, Georgetown needed a last second three-pointer from Chris Wright to force an extra period. In the overtime, Jason Clark came up big, making all three of his three-point attempts, and quickly putting the game away.

Before the UNC Asheville game, we asked everyone how many points the freshmen would score. Lubick scored 7 and Starks added 2, so that means hoyasincebirth hit the nail on the head guessing 9 points for the Freshmen. Since there was no winner after the NC State game, hoyasincebirth picks up two points for that prediction. Congratulations. Twice.
Now on to tomorrow night’s game.
Tomorrow night, the Hoyas face their first ranked opponent of the 2010-11 season when they meet the Missouri Tigers in the John McLendon Classic. So far on the season, the Tigers have been averaging just shy of 82 points per game. The Hoyas, meanwhile, have been holding their opponents to less than 62 points a game.
That leads to this question:
How many points will Missouri score against the Hoyas?
We’re gonna guess right in the middle – 72 points. What do you think?

Georgetown broke open a tied game Saturday with a 23-0 run, holding UNC Asheville scoreless for 8 1/2 minutes en route to an easy 87-72 victory. Austin Freeman led the scoring charge by burying seven three-pointers, which tied the all-time Georgetown record for three balls made in a game, and finishing with a season-high 32 points. Julian Vaughn continued a string of productive games, finishing with 16 points and 9 rebounds, as did Hollis Thompson, who netted 11 while grabbing 10 boards. Chris Wright took just three shots, but continued to be the Hoyas’ principal distributor, finishing with nine assists, while Georgetown also had encouraging contributions from big men Nate Lubick (7 points) and Henry Sims (4 points, 4 rebounds, albeit with 5 fouls in just 13 minutes). While Georgetown relaxed a bit too much at times, letting a lead that swelled to 25 dwindle to just 12, the Hoyas turned in a strong performance overall as a final tune-up before a more challenging stretch beginning with Tuesday’s game against Missouri. Here’s what others are saying:

Teams
Georgetown:
This was a typical holiday game. The Hoyas played well for stretches and the win was never really in doubt, but there were lapses that allowed the opponent to stay within striking distance. In the end Georgetown played very well for long enough to take a commanding lead, and then they could afford to sleepwalk a bit.
Georgetown went on an early 23-0 run to blow the game wide open, and the Hoyas put it on autopilot for the rest of the game. When the Bulldogs got a little too close for comfort, the Hoyas would burst forward with a mini-run to keep the lead safe. It is both frustrating and understandable that the team get complacent with a 23 point lead over an inferior opponent, but they did do a good job of scoring when they had to.
Also, in a game where Chris Wright and Jason Clark did not have their most productive nights on offense, the Hoyas still put up 87 points, which means that if one of the guards has an off-night, the Hoyas have the scoring ability to find point production from other sources.
