Georgetown overcame a listless first half Monday night, shaking off the last of the pumpkin pie and stuffing; the Hoyas then ratcheted up their defense and found their shooting stroke en route to a 81-58 victory over IUPUI. Hollis Thompson led the Hoyas with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Henry Sims chipped in 14 and Nate Lubick and Markel Starks both reached career highs, the former in rebounds (14, to go with 8 points), and the latter in scoring (13 points).

Teams
Georgetown:
Georgetown started the game poorly, taking almost three minutes to make their first field goal. The team looked sloppy, missing a lot of inside shots, and bobbling passes and rebounds. As the game wore on, the Hoyas improved offensively, as they used fast breaks to get the offense jump-started. The Hoyas also began to penetrate the Cougar’s defense, getting to the hoop for easy baskets or pulling up for floating teardrops in the lane.

Georgetown advanced to 5-1 with the 81-58 victory over IUPUI. After the game, Coach Thompson talked to the media along with leading scorer Hollis Thompson (21 points and 10 rebounds), leading rebounder Nate Lubick (8 points and 14 rebounds), and point guard Markel Starks (13 points).
Here’s what they had to say:

Hey everybody, Johnny here at Verizon Center a little less than half an hour away from tipoff between the Georgetown Hoyas and IUPUI Jaguars.
This is the first game back home for the Hoyas after going 2-1 in Maui, and there are very few students back from Thanksgiving break. Like only three rows deep on one of the two student sections. But the band and cheerleaders are here.
Here’s the info I have for you so far.
- The Hoyas are set to start the same five – Starks, Clark, Thompson, Lubick, and Sims
- IUPUI will be starting Gaines, Thomas, Chiles, Young, and Siakam
- And the refs for tonight’s game are Karl Hess, Brent Hamptom, and Tony Chiazza
Check back throughout the game for updates and stats. And feel free to leave your comments below

The Hoyas return to the continental United States after earning a 2-1 record in the Maui Invitational, falling to Kansas, but then rebounding to defeat Chaminade and Memphis. Before the tournament, we asked you to predict which Georgetown player would lead the team in scoring. Jason Clark earned that honor, pouring in 69 points over the three game span. That means that we at Hoya Hoops were the closest with our guess that he would score 60. So, yay to us!
Tonight, the Hoyas take on IUPUI at Verizon Center. In Maui, the Hoyas had a few struggles on the boards, getting out-rebounded in two of the three games.
How many rebounds will the Hoyas have?
We think Georgetown will grab 40 rebounds led by Henry Sims, mostly because we think the defense will force a lot of missed shots. Let us know your guesses in the comments.

After a long weekend and a lot of turkey, I can now look back and reflect upon Georgetown’s trip to Hawaii.
Teams
Georgetown:
There were lots of questions surrounding this year’s Georgetown team entering Maui, as the first few games were not challenging enough to show us what the team was made of. After the tournament, I think we all have a better sense of this year’s team.
The Hoyas showed me a lot, playing hard throughout the whole tournament, competing at the same level as the two top 25 opponents that they faced and soundly defeating an inferior opponent. The Hoyas did make a number of mistakes that are typical for teams with lots of underclassmen, such as going on extended scoring droughts and falling asleep on defense occasionally. But, the team was able to overcome these flaws for an impressive overall performance in Maui.
