With the New Year’s celebrations just hours away, perhaps the thoughts of forthcoming festivities distracted the players. Yet the Georgetown Hoyas survived a very difficult shooting performance to outlast the Providence Friars 49-40 and extend their winning streak to ten games. On an afternoon where every point was critical, Georgetown’s Jason Clark led all scorers with 16 points, including a fast break 3-point play in the final seconds to seal the victory for the Hoyas. Henry Sims had a solid all around performance in spite of shooting 2-13 from the field, contributing 11 points, 7 rebounds, 4 blocks, and 3 assists. Providence was led by their talented freshman LaDontae Henton who scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Hello Hoya fans. Johnny here sitting courtside at the Verizon Center before the Hoyas’ Big East home opener against the Providence Friars. Georgetown is coming off of their big win at Louisville to get their conference season started, while Providence is 0-1 in the Big East, falling to St. John’s on the road on Tuesday.
The band’s not here; the cheerleaders aren’t here; the students aren’t here; practically nobody’s here. So the Hoyas’ conference home opener is going to be a little bit different than Louisville’s with 22,500+ fans. But we’ve still got half an hour until opening tip. Hopefully more Hoya faithful will swing by to see the ballgame before the ball drops.
Here are the starters and officials for you:
- Georgetown will be starting the same five – Starks, Clark, Thompson, Lubick, and Sims.
- The Friars look set to start Coleman, Cotton, Henton, Council, and
Dixon Batts.
- The refs for this afternoon’s matchup are Pat Driscoll, John Gaffney, and Wally Rutecki.
Stay here for more in-game comments, stats, and updates, and feel free to leave your own comments below.

Before the Hoyas’ trip to Louisville, we asked everybody how many points the team would put up in the KFC Yum! Center. Bob from Columbia guessed 72 and the Hoyas actually scored 71. If Otto had made one of those last free throws, he would have hit it on the head. Regardless, he was the closest, so congratulations, Bob.
Against the Cardinals, the freshmen and sophomores put up an impressive 47 points for the Hoyas, carrying the team through the first half, and helping to close out the victory down the line. With Georgetown’s Big East home opener only hours away, we had this question for you:
How many points will the Hoya underclassmen score against Providence and who will lead them?
We’re going to say they’ll score 25 points with the hot-hand of Markel Starks leading the way. What do you think? Post your guesses below.

Georgetown:
Georgetown picked up their biggest win of the season on Wednesday night – not because Louisville was ranked #4 in the country, not because it was played in a crazy hostile environment, not because it was the first Big East conference game of the young season – well, because of all of those things. There are still some areas of concern with this team, noticeably the tendency to blow big leads in the final minutes of the game, but the thrill of this win has temporarily relieved Hoya fans’ worries. As the season moves on, the Hoyas will need to work on their focus for all 40 minutes, but for now, it’s good to see that the team can keep their cool down the stretch and earn the W’s.

Georgetown escaped from Louisville Wednesday night with a win over a top-5 squad. It was another victory for a team that’s learning, and winning, on the job. Make no mistake: this win wasn’t easy. The Hoyas were frequently sloppy on offense, yielding to the Louisville pressure to commit 16 turnovers, and had a number of defensive lapses, letting Cardinal sniper Kyle Kuric shake free for five three-pointers. But Georgetown did just enough to get by, getting defensive stops in the waning minutes, corraling just enough rebounds, and riding career nights by Markel Starks, Otto Porter, and Jabril Trawick to a thrilling, narrow victory.

The Georgetown Hoyas will not win many games this season if their two key players Jason Clark and Hollis Thompson combine to score only 17 points on 6-18 shooting from the field. However, thanks to the excellent play from the Hoya underclassmen, the Georgetown Hoyas began Big East play with an impressive road victory against previously undefeated Louisville 71-68. Sophomore guard Markell Starks led all scorers with a career-high 20 points on an incredible 7-8 FG (4-4 3pt), and Freshman Otto Porter collected his first collegiate double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
