Howard Recap

By Hoya Hoops

Georgetown survived a scare at home from local rival Howard, winning 62-48 in a game that was much closer than the score would indicate. Otto Porter led three Hoyas in double figures with 13 points, while Mike Phillips had 14 for the Bison in a losing effort.

The Hoyas started the game on fire, scoring the first 17 points of the game. It took the Bison nearly ten minutes to get onto the score sheet, and at halftime it looked as though Georgetown would cruise to victory, leading 30-17.

However, the Hoyas started the second half sluggishly and allowed Howard to get back in the game. It took Georgetown over five minutes until they scored their first field goal of the half, as the Bison used a 15-4 run to start the 2nd period and cut the Georgetown lead to two.

Tense moments followed as the Hoyas could not gain any separation from the Bison, partly due to poor free throw shooting. In the end, it was the Georgetown defense that proved to be the difference, creating numerous turnovers to stem the tide and giving the Hoyas extra possessions. Georgetown took advantage, finally pushing the lead back to double digits with 2:49 minutes remaining, sealing the hard fought win.

The Hoyas have the week off for exams before returning to Verizon Center to take on another local team, American. Tip-off against the Eagles is slated for 12 PM.
