The Saint John’s Test

Last year, Tony talked about the significance of the St. John’s game during seasons where Hoya fans can’t quite tell if the team is going to be good or bad.

This year, fans would expect the Hoyas to be a pretty solid team with lots of experience, tons of depth, and one of the best backcourts in the country. But if the Notre Dame game shook some of your confidence, then tonight’s game will be the true test of how the season will turn out.

If the Hoyas do well and cruise to victory, expect big things from this team. If they falter and lose to the Red Storm, it could spell disaster like in 2009.

And if they win a back-and-forth game that’s closer than expected, we may be looking at a situation similar to last year – an unpredictable season with very high highs and very low lows.

We only have a few hours to wait and find out.

Summers’ Fishing Trip

A little over a month ago, Tony said that the the game against Louisville was like a win-or-go-home NBA playoff game. When the Hoyas fell in that game, I took the privilege to expand on the analogy by making Georgetown a Gone Fishin’ image ala the TNT crew.

Given recent events, I think the picture is even more appropriate now.

Last year, Savannah State came to town to play against Maryland in College Park. Before that game, we caught up with Tiger Head Coach and Georgetown alum Horace Broadnax to talk about what it’s like not to have a conference, the Georgetown – Maryland rivalry, and of course the 1984 season.

The “Controversial” Game

With the Quarterfinal game of the Big East Tournament between Georgetown and Villanova coming up later today, we thought this would be a good time to update you on what happened last time the two teams met. It was a close game throughout, and after 48 fouls being handed out, the game ended on two Jonathan Wallace free throws with under a second to go. The pundits called the Georgetown win controversial, lucky, or just plain wrong, but with how that game was refereed all night, it’s hard to blame Bob Donato.

A 32 Point Victory

On January 30, the Hoyas traveled to Madison Square Garden and crushed the St. John’s Red Storm 74-42, and it could have been worse. We thought that since the two teams meet again tonight, this would be a good time to look back at that victory to perhaps learn something from how that game played out and to just relive the memory.

Remembering January 21, 2008

The Hoyas have a big game coming up against Syracuse on Saturday at the Carrier Dome. The two teams met up already this year, and I thought it would be a good time to look back at that thrilling overtime victory.

Before the game, we talked with Jameson from CuseAdelphia.com, and he gave us the Inside Scoop on Syracuse. He didn’t give any hint of how close that game would turn out to be, but he’s been a loyal commenter on Hoya Hoops ever since, so you might want to check out his site in preparation for Saturday’s game.

In Mike’s analysis, he talked about Jessie Sapp coming up big at the end of regulation and in overtime. Looking back at our postgame poll, it was a two horse race for game MVP, but in the end, you the readers gave Jeremiah Rivers the edge as he earned 48% of the votes to just 38% for Jessie.

We also made a Rival Reel for the game, “Let It Snow“. It didn’t get shown at the Verizon Center, and it wasn’t as popular as some of the others we’ve done, but now might be a good time to take a second look at it in preparation for for this weekend’s contest or a first look at it if you missed it before.
