Before his time on the hilltop, David Wingate was a part of one of the greatest high school basketball teams in history. Speculated to go to Maryland, his decision to attend Georgetown was a huge pickup for the Hoyas who would soon win the 1984 National Championship.

There are 42 players in the Georgetown Basketball 1,000 point club. The first player reached the 1,000 point mark in 1950, and the most recent player did so last month. Today we have two questions about the Hoya 1,000 Point club.

1. Of the 42 players in the 1,000 point club, nine of them played under current coach John Thompson III. Name those nine players.

The second question concerns only the Top 25 members of the 1,000 Point Club. All of the players in Georgetown’s Top 25 in scoring come from the modern era of Georgetown Basketball (since John Thompson Jr. became head coach in 1972). Of those 25 players, there are four recurring jersey numbers – #22, #32, #33, and #34 (we’re not including Kevin Braswell’s brief stint at #3).

JUPS 101 – Justice and Redemption

In the 1986-87 and 1987-88 seasons, Georgetown defeated Syracuse five times. The four Big East season matchups were so close that the Hoyas won by a combined total of six points. The 1987 game at the Capital Centre went to overtime, and Georgetown was victorious 83-81 thanks to a Hoya buzzer beater. The following season, at the Carrier Dome, Georgetown won 69-68 by some more last-second heroics.

In the history of the conference, Georgetown has played a top-seeded Syracuse four times in the Big East Tournament. In 2003, the Orange came out on top, defeating the 5th seeded Hoyas, but in the other three matchups, the underdog Hoyas were victorious.

In 2007, Georgetown and American played each other for the first time since the 1986-87 season. In the three recent meetings, the Hoyas have defeated the Eagles pretty handily, winning those games by an average score 26 points. In the old days, Georgetown and American used to play each other all the time. In fact, the two teams played each other every year from 1953 – 1986.

Before the 2009-10 season, assistant coach Mike Brennan left the Eagles sideline to reunite with John Thompson III with whom he had worked at Princeton. Meanwhile longtime assistant coach Robert Burke parted ways with the Hoyas and joined coach Jeff Jones at American.

• Austin Freeman made six three-pointers against Missouri after connecting on the Hoya record-tying seven against UNC Asheville. No other Hoya has made six or more threes in back-to-back games, so Austin now holds the record for most made treys in two games with 13.

• Austin Freeman, Jason Clark, and Chris Wright all reached the 20 point mark. This is only the second time under John Thompson III’s tenure that three players have scored 20 or more, the last being last year’s Duke game when it was Austin, Chris, and Greg Monroe scoring 20. The time before that was a Mike Sweetney, Kevin Braswell, and Wesley Wilson showing against Howard in ’01.
• Austin Freeman scored 31 points after scoring 32 against UNC Asheville. Last year, we showed you a list of 30-point performances up through the Harvard game, and it looks like we’ll have to update that list soon.

  Under Coach Thompson, there have been five games where a player has gone for 30, and now Austin is responsible for three of them.

  The last time a Hoya had back-to-back 30-point games was in February of 2003 when Mike Sweetney put up 38 in a double-overtime loss to Notre Dame and followed that up with 32 two days later against Syracuse.

  If you’re looking for the last time a Hoya put up 30 in back-to-back wins, you have to go all the way back to Allen Iverson‘s 37 against Villanova in the 1996 season finale and 38 against Miami in the Big East Tournament.

• Chris Wright earned his second career double-double dishing out 10 assists to go with his 21 points. He earned his first in Charleston when he had a career-high 12 assists against Coastal Carolina. Chris is averaging over seven assists a game so far this season.
• Jason Clark came up big in overtime scoring nine points on 3-3 from 3. That’s the most points any Hoya has scored in overtime under Coach Thompson III’s reign. The next best was DaJuan Summers with 8 against North Carolina in the East Regional Championship. Brandon Bowman also scored 8 in the overtime win against Norfolk State in Coach Thompson’s first season.
• The Hoyas went 18 for 18 from the free throw line on the night, which is the best in Georgetown’s recorded history – at least according to our friends at The Georgetown Basketball History Project. They go back to 1978 with free throw percentage stats, and the best on that list was 12-12 against American in December of 78.

  Edit: The Georgetown Media Guide confirms that 12-12 against American was the record.

• The Hoyas scored 111 points, which is the most under JTIII. The next best offensive performance was 110 against Radford at McDonough, the last victory for Georgetown at the on-campus arena.

Markel Starks’ performance is tied for the second highest output by a future Hoya in the Cap Classic. Patrick Ewing and Mark Tillmon each also scored 18 points, so the young Mr. Starks is in pretty good company. Victor Page put up 22 points in 1994, which is still the Hoya record.

Below is a list of the Hoyas to play in the prestigious event, and their point total, some of which will surprise you.

Anyway, as for one more reason why the Big East is the best conference in the world, here it comes. The Big East Tournament lasts for FIVE DAYS! It’s incredible. That’s like if Christmas all of a sudden was 48 hours.

Today is the first day of the 2010 BET, and even though only teams #9 – #16 are in action, you will be seeing a LOT of talented teams at Madison Square Garden today.

If you love the Big East, you’ll be pulling for UCONN against St. John’s to keep hope alive for another Big East team making the NCAA Tournament. If UCONN makes the tourney, it means the 12th best team in the Big East is one of the 34 best at-large teams in the nation…world.

If you have a favorite team in the Big East, you will likely be cheering against Connecticut.

If you are an old school Big East fan, you can enjoy the classic battle of Seton Hall versus Providence.

If you just love the game, you’ll be satisfied too.

Most likely if you’re familiar with our site, you’re a Hoya fan, in which case here are a few bits of advice.

• First, hope DePaul comes up with a stunning upset to advance to play the Hoyas (maybe the ghost of Dallas Comegys can provide some inspiration).
• Second, don’t cheer for extra Big East teams to make the NCAA Tournament. The Hoyas just had to deal with these incredibly tough teams for the past two months, the fewer Big East teams in the big dance, the better for the Hoyas.
• Third, take a quick little refresher course on Georgetown Big East Tournament History. The Hoyas owned the tournament for about 10 years, and even in the down times they still were at their best in the Garden in March.

Here are some stats to get you even more ready for Noon today.

• As Mike pointed out, this was the first time that the Hoyas scored 100 points against a Big East opponent in regulation since 1996. In the last game of the regular season, the Hoyas defeated Villanova at the Caps Center/USAir Arena/whatever it was called at that time 106-68. It was the final home game for Othella Harrington, Jerome Williams, and Allen Iverson.
• The game marked the first time a team has scored 100 points against Villanova while Coach Jay Wright has been there. The last time was when Providence beat them 100-74 on February 11, 2004.
• Austin Freeman scored 25 points That marks the fourth straight game that Free has gone for 20 or more points. The last Hoya to do that was Mike Sweetney in 2003. Big Mike amazingly scored 20 or more in 26 out of 32 games that season.
  
  The last guard to score 20 points in four straight was Shernard Long back in 1998.
• Jason Clark scored a career high 24 points and one was one three-pointer shy of tying Mark Tillmon and Darrel Owen’s record of 7 in a single game.
