NJIT In-Game Thread

By Johnny

Hey everyone, Johnny here courtside in Chinatown about half an hour away from tipoff between your Georgetown Hoyas and the Highlanders of NJIT. The Hoyas are coming off a spectacular win against Alabama in Tuscaloosa and are happy to be home for the rest of the non-conference schedule.

The Verizon Center is pretty empty right now (I could easily count the fans), and the Capitals are playing here later on tonight so the lower seats are a little different to support the transforming arena. Still, some students are here early, and the place should become a little less vacuous by gametime.

Here’s the information I have for you so far:

  • The Hoyas are starting the same five – Clark, Starks, Thompson, Lubick, and Sims.
  • The Highlanders will be starting Kearse, Woods, Wilkerson, Ohri, and Regis.
  • The refs for this afternoon’s game are going to be Gary Prager, Chris Beaver, and Evon Burroughs.

I’ll be checking in throughout the game, so if you’re watching on ESPN3, keep a tab on HoyaHoops.com to follow along with our in-game thread.

IUPUI In-Game Thread

By Johnny

Hey everybody, Johnny here at Verizon Center a little less than half an hour away from tipoff between the Georgetown Hoyas and IUPUI Jaguars.

This is the first game back home for the Hoyas after going 2-1 in Maui, and there are very few students back from Thanksgiving break. Like only three rows deep on one of the two student sections. But the band and cheerleaders are here.

Here’s the info I have for you so far.

  • The Hoyas are set to start the same five – Starks, Clark, Thompson, Lubick, and Sims
  • IUPUI will be starting Gaines, Thomas, Chiles, Young, and Siakam
  • And the refs for tonight’s game are Karl Hess, Brent Hamptom, and Tony Chiazza

Check back throughout the game for updates and stats. And feel free to leave your comments below

UNC Greensboro In-Game Thread

By Johnny

Hey everybody, Johnny here at the Verizon Center a little over half an hour away from Georgetown’s first game of the EA Sports Maui Invitational Tournament. Now, why a game in downtown Washington D.C. against a team who is not going to Hawaii in the foreseeable future should count as a a part of the Maui Invitational Tournament, I’m not sure, but that’s the way it is this year.

They’ve expanded the field to 12 teams, four of which are playing each other in a two-day tournament this upcoming weekend. UNC Greensboro is one of those teams, and before they fight off against Middle Tennessee State, they get to play Maui-bound Tennessee and Georgetown.

After losing to the Volunteers, it’s time for them to face the Hoyas in their second Opening Round Game. This is all very confusing.

Jack the Bulldog is wearing his Maui gear, and they’re saying that the fan with the best Hawaiian outfit on will win a prize. So far, there’s one student dressed for the occasion.

But for the game itself, here’s the info I have for you so far.

  • The Hoyas are set to start the same five: Starks, Clark, Thompson, Lubick, and Sims.
  • The Spartans look like they’re gonna start Williams Van Dussen, Randall Simpson, and Paulos.
  • The refs for tonight’s game are John Cahill, Mike Eades, and Alfred Smith

Savannah State In-Game Thread

By Johnny

Hey everybody, Johnny here courtside at the Verizon Center, less than one hour away from the 2011-12 Georgetown Basketball season opener against the Savannah State Tigers.

Students Lining UpIt’s a little after 11:00, and the Phonebooth is pretty empty, but there are some loyal students who lined up to get in early. I spoke with the front of the line – Riley Golden, Greg Francfort, Patrick Eronini, and John Kenchelian – four seniors who got to Chinatown at 6:00 in the morning.

VCU In-Game Thread

By Johnny

Hey everybody, Johnny here, sitting courtside at the United Center in Chicago, Ill. The Purdue Boilermakers are currently beating up on St. Peter’s late in the 2nd half, and the winner of this game will take on the winner of the main event, the Georgetown Hoyas’ 2nd round NCAA tournament game against VCU.

There’s tons of anticipation for tonight’s game since it’s the Big Dance, it’s a local rivalry of sorts, and, oh yeah, Chris Wright is back. In about an hour we should be able to see how the Hoyas look with their starting point guard back in the lineup, and how Chris’ hand has really healed.

Since this Purdue game is still going on, and since I just got into Chicago a couple hours ago, I don’t have much information for you about our game, but I will be posting comments once I get news and I’ll keep them coming throughout the game.

What I do have – starting lineups and referese:
For the Hoyas, it’s the good old starting five from when Georgetown could actually win – Austin Freeman, Jason Clark, Nate Lubick, Julian Vaughn, and CHRIS WRIGHT.
For the Rams, it will be Bradford Burgess, Ed Nixon, Joey Rodriguez, Jamie Skeen, and D.J. Haley.

The refs for tonight’s NCAA Tournament 2nd Round Game are going to be Doug Sirmons, Michael C. Greenstein, and Rick Crawford.

Syracuse In-Game Thread

By Johnny

Hey everybody, Johnny here at Verizon Center. There’s a lot of gray here for Senior Day as the entire lower bowl and the mezzanine are covered with Gray Out shirts for the Hoya fans coming to this sold out game between Georgetown and Syracuse.

There’s also a lot of press here, and I’ve been kicked out of my usual spot behind the basket and I’m sitting in the corner above one of the tunnels. There are a ton of NBA scouts here today and I saw a few of the Dallas Mavericks already here for their game tonight against the Wizards.

There are not too many fans here yet besides the packed student sections, as both sides are starting their warm ups.

The scoreboard reads that Chris Wright will be starting, but that’s been known to change before. Chris is out there, wearing his warmup uniforms and not a suit, but he’s not touching a ball working out with the team; he’s just watching. His left hand has mainly been in his shirt pocket, but when he pulled it out, it looked like it was not wrapped up in tape or any sort of brace.

As the ball rolled to him though, he kicked it up to his teammates instead of passing it with his hands.

So here’s the info I have for you so far.

The scoreboard currently says it will be the same starters – Wright, Freeman, Clark, Lubick, and Vaughn.
The Orange will be starting Jackson, Jardine, Keita, Triche, and Joseph.
The refs for this afternoon are going to be Bob Donato, Gene Steratore, and Les Jones.

Keep checking back for more updates. I’ll let you know who the official starters are as soon as I find out more.

Cincinnati In-Game Thread

By Johnny

Hey everybody, Johnny here at Verizon Center. It’s 8:30pm, and for some reason the game hasn’t started yet. A very late 9:00pm tipoff tonight means I got to replace my usual Chipotle pre-dinner meal with Rosa Mexicano. ¡Muy sabroso!

It also means that no one’s here yet. Expect a smaller crowd than usual, and expect most people to get here much closer to tipoff.

It’s a huge game tonight as both sides have a lot to play for. Cincinnati has 21 wins on the season, is sitting in 8th place in the conference ahead of #14 Connecticut, but have 0 votes in either poll, and are desperately looking for some end-of-the-season wins to get them an at-large bid in the tournament.

The Hoyas have only three games left and have the potential of earning that double-bye for the Big East Tournament. With a difficult senior day against Syracuse, and a rematch on the road against this Cincinnati team looming, tonight’s game is a must win.

While we’re waiting for tipoff, here’s the info I have for you.
The Hoyas are set to start the same five – Wright, Freeman, Clark, Lubick, and Vaughn.
The Bearcats will be sending out Wright, Davis, Wilks, Bishop, and Thomas.

The refs tonight are Jamie Luckie, Mike Roberts, and Tony Greene.

I’ll be posting in-game updates throughout, so check back with your questions, comments, and insights.

Marquette In-Game Thread

By Johnny

Hey everybody, Johnny here at Verizon Center, an hour away from the 1:00 tipoff between the Georgetown Hoyas and Marquette Golden Eagles.

The Hoyas come into this game on a seven game winning streak and looking as good as they have all season. At 8-4 in the Big East, Georgetown sits in third place in the conference, holding the tiebreaker over Louisville. Marquette comes into today’s meeting at 6-5 in the conference, and this will be their third straight road game who fell to Villanova back on February 2 and beat USF on Wednesday.

Expect a big offensive showing today, as the Golden Eagles are ranked 1st in the conference in scoring offense, but only 14th in defense. The shooters should be finding good looks, and they’ll have to knock them down.

Here are the starting lineups for you.
The Hoyas are set to start the same five as usual – Wright, Freeman, Clark, Lubick, and Vaughn.
The Golden Eagles will be starting Johnson-Odom, Blue, Buycks, Crowder, and Otule.
The refs this afternoon are John Cahill, Dough Shows, and Jeff Anderson.

I’ll be filling you in with in-game updates and comments, so check back often and feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments.

Louisville In-Game Thread

By Johnny

Hey everyone, Johnny here at Verizon Center 15 minutes before the tipoff between Georgetown and Louisville, two teams who moved up in the rankings today thanks to big wins on Saturday against Villanova and Connecticut respectively.

Lots of Louisville fans were spotted milling about Chinatown outside the arena, so expect there to be a fair number of people cheering for the wrong team tonight. Hopefully, they won’t have much to cheer about.

Here’s the info I have for you so far:
The starters are going to stick the same for the Hoyas – Clark, Wright, Freeman, Lubick, and Vaughn.
For the Cardinals, it’s gonna be Knowles, Siva, Chris Smith, Jennings, and Kuric Van Treese.

And the refs tonight are Ed Corbett, John Gaffney, and Karl Hess.

Check back for more updates and commentary throughout, and feel free to leave your own insights/questions below.

Villanova In-Game Thread

By Johnny

Hey everyone, Johnny out in Philadelphia, getting ready for the classic Big East matchup between the Georgetown Hoyas and Villanova Wildcats. We’re still about 45 minutes away from tipoff, but I can see that the seats behind both baskets here in the Wells Fargo Center are covered with white Villanova Rally towels for Nova Nation.

I don’t have ref information for you yet, but the scoreboard says that it will be the same starting lineup that the Hoyas put against St. John’s – Nate Lubick instead of Hollis Thompson. It worked well against the Red Storm, so we’ll have to see how the lineup change works out here in PA.

Like I said, the Hoyas are set to start Clark, Wright, Freeman, Lubick, and Vaughn.
The Wildcats look to start Pena, Wayns, Fisher, Yarou, and Stokes.

Check back for more info as the game goes on, and feel free to keep your comments coming in the thread.
