Hoyas in first Top 25

By Hoya Hoops
  • The first set of polls was released over the weekend, and Georgetown came in #22 in the AP Poll and #18 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll. In both polls, the Big East had 7 teams in the Top 25.
  • The Indiana Pacers won their first game of the season on Saturday, defeating the Boston Celtics 95-79. Roy played 12 minutes and scored 5 points off of 2-3 shooting. Coach Jim O’Brien had this to say of Hibbert: “I thought Roy did some good things. He needs to maintain his focus. His work ethic is great and I’m very, very pleased with how he’s developing.”
  • Jeff Green’s team also earned their first win this weekend, and for them it was the first win with their new name, the Oklahoma City Thunder. They defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves 88-85 last night. Jeff had 13 points and three assists, but he missed two critical free throws that would have pushed the lead to five with seven seconds left in the game.
  • Patrick Ewing was upset to find out that the Knicks had cut his son and said that he is looking into opportunities in Europe or the D-League. Meanwhile, the New York Post is reporting that the Knicks may waive Stephon Marbury today as Knicks President Donnie Walsh and Marbury are scheduled to meet today. Marc Berman of the Post speculates that if they waive Marbury, the Knicks may re-sign Patrick Ewing, Jr.

In the NBA season openers for three former Hoyas, the results were not very good last night. Allen Iverson, Jeff Green, and Roy Hibbert each lost their first game of the new season. Hoya Hoops gives you a quick rundown of how the former Georgetown stars fared in their opening contests.

The NBA season tips off on October 28th. It’s easy to miss some of the transactions in the NBA during the off-season, so here is a list of all of the Hoyas in the league. Naturally, all of this is subject to change, but here’s what we have right now.

Oklahoma City SuperSonics

By Johnny

For those of you who don’t know, Jeff Green and the Seattle SuperSonics are no longer Jeff Green and the Seattle SuperSonics. They are Jeff Green and the Okalahoma City … well no one knows just yet. Even though the move was made official back in beginning of July, they’ve been nameless ever since. Until now.

Around the World

By Hoya Hoops
  • Slovenian team Union Olimpija has signed recent Hoya graduates Jonathan Wallace and Tyler Crawford to play for them in the upcoming basketball season. Links about Jonathan are here and here, but for Tyler, all we could discover is that Google doesn’t speak Slovenian. If you think you can decipher it, here’s the original link.

**Edited: Tyler Crawford was not signed; he was just on trial with the team. No word yet on his future status with the team.**

  • The USA men’s basketball team took home the Gold Medal in the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games. While there were no Hoyas on the roster, Jeff Green practiced with them in preparation for the tournament and here’s what he had to say about the experience.

Withdrawal

By Mike

Yesterday was a big day for college basketball fans. June 17th was the deadline for college students to withdraw their name from the NBA draft and still retain their eligibility. For Hoya fans, there was little drama, as they could watch the last minute decisions with relative ease. Of course, there was some excitement, but the relief of Joe Alexander’s departure to the NBA or the return of a powerful UNC lineup probably did not cause Georgetown fans to lose any sleep. It was a different story last year.

A New Dawn

By Tony

Congratulations to Jeff Green on being named to the NBA Rookie First Team. I still think that Jeff would’ve been better off playing at Georgetown this past season, but that ship has sailed. Anyway, according to the most knowledgeable people in the league, Jeff was one of the Top 5 first year players. That’s great for him, and even better for Georgetown University - maybe.

  • After averaging 10.5 points and 4.7 rebounds a game, Jeff Green was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. Jeff is the first Hoya to make the team since Allen Iverson in 1996-97.
  • This past weekend, former Georgetown Captain Tom Scates passed away from a heart attack. Graduating in 1979, Scates was one of Coach John Thompson Jr.’s first big men, and he graduated as the best shot blocker in team history. Here are the Georgetown press release and an article from the View From the Hilltop blog.

Green’s Big Night

By Johnny

Allen Iverson and the Denver Nuggets need to win all the games they can in order to make the NBA playoffs. They’re in a battle with the Golden State Warriors for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western conference, and time is running out. Heading into their game against the Seattle SuperSonics last night, they had beaten the Sonics in all three meetings, the last of which being the 168-116 blowout less than a month ago. This time, however, Jeff Green didn’t want to go down without a fight.

Final Misfortune

By Tony

The Final Four is upon us once again. Personally, it seems like much longer than just one year ago that the Hoyas were preparing to take on Ohio State in the 2007 Final Four. A lot has changed in that one year, both nationally and on the hilltop. Throughout this season in college basketball, I felt like there were three teams that were the top teams in the country - Memphis, Kansas, and UCLA. There were a handful of teams that were just slightly below that upper echelon - North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Georgetown, and Louisville among a few others. I felt that even as a #2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, the Hoyas would have had to have a lot of things go their way to win the National Championship. As it was, very little did go their way.
