Hoyas in first Top 25

By Hoya Hoops
  • The first set of polls was released over the weekend, and Georgetown came in #22 in the AP Poll and #18 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll. In both polls, the Big East had 7 teams in the Top 25.
  • The Indiana Pacers won their first game of the season on Saturday, defeating the Boston Celtics 95-79. Roy played 12 minutes and scored 5 points off of 2-3 shooting. Coach Jim O’Brien had this to say of Hibbert: “I thought Roy did some good things. He needs to maintain his focus. His work ethic is great and I’m very, very pleased with how he’s developing.”
  • Jeff Green’s team also earned their first win this weekend, and for them it was the first win with their new name, the Oklahoma City Thunder. They defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves 88-85 last night. Jeff had 13 points and three assists, but he missed two critical free throws that would have pushed the lead to five with seven seconds left in the game.
  • Patrick Ewing was upset to find out that the Knicks had cut his son and said that he is looking into opportunities in Europe or the D-League. Meanwhile, the New York Post is reporting that the Knicks may waive Stephon Marbury today as Knicks President Donnie Walsh and Marbury are scheduled to meet today. Marc Berman of the Post speculates that if they waive Marbury, the Knicks may re-sign Patrick Ewing, Jr.

Yesterday, Patrick Ewing Jr. was waived from the New York Knicks as they were forced to cut one player to finalize their 15-man roster. Despite being a fan favorite and putting up an impressive last showing in his preseason appearance on Friday, Patrick will have to continue with his search for a permanent team.

  • On Friday, Patrick Ewing, Jr.was traded from the Houston Rockets to the New York Knicks for French international Frederic Weis. Patrick is the 16th man under contract with the Knicks, and with only 15 players per team, Pat will have to earn his spot on the roster. If he does make the team, though, big Pat has said that the Knicks should take #33 down from the rafters.
  • Today is Coach John Thompson, Jr.’s birthday. Let’ see what happens if Smokin’ Al Koken forgets to wish him a Happy Birthday on his show this afternoon.
  • Patrick Ewing will be inducted into the Hall of Fame this Thursday, and in honor of his accomplishment, we at Hoya Hoops will be paying tribute to Big Pat throughout the week. Be sure to check out what we have to offer.

Last night, Patrick Ewing, Jr. performed in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) 20th Annual State Farm Slam Dunk Contest, and he did just about as good as anyone could ask. He didn’t rival Vince Carter, or Michael and Dominique, but he had a perfect outing.

By Hoya Hoops

With the season over for the Hoyas, three Georgetown seniors are still making headlines:

  • Roy Hibbert was named a Second Team Associated Press All-American this week. Roy was also named to the First Team All-Big East squad this past season, First Team All-Big East in 2007, and Second Team All-Big East in 2006.
  • Patrick Ewing, Jr. will participate in the 20th Annual State Farm College Slam Dunk Championship this Thursday in San Antonio. He will be competing against James Gist of Maryland, Will Bullard of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, J.R. Giddens of New Mexico, Brian Randle of Illinois, Deron Washington of Virginia Tech, Sonny Weems of Arkansas, and Joey Dorsey of Memphis. The event will be televised nationally on ESPN and ESPN HD beginning at 9:00PM.
  • Patrick Ewing, Jr. will also join Jonathan Wallace as they participate in the 56th Annual Portsmouth Invitational Tournament next week. The P.I.T. is the last opportunity for seniors to be evaluated by NBA coaches and scouts before the NBA pre-draft camp in Orlando. Johnny will be heading to Portsmouth, VA to cover a few of the games and hopefully get a chance to talk to some of the players and coaches.
