The Hoyas started the game off very well with efficient offense and smothering defense, establishing a 10-point lead. Henry Sims collect two early offensive fouls, and the momentum swung in favor of the underdogs. The Wolfpack put together a 12-0 run at the end of the half and lead by 3 points at the intermission.

In the second half, the Wolfpack stayed in rhythm offensively, making timely three pointers throughout the half to keep the Hoyas at bay. Georgetown trailed by 7 with 1:11 to play but put together a frantic surge in the final moments, led by Thompson. N.C. State missed a series of free throws to keep the chance of a comeback alive. The Hoyas had the ball down by 2 with 30 seconds to play. Otto Porter missed a jumper from the wing that would have tied the game. Finally, with six seconds left, N.C. State led by three at the free throw line with a chance to ice the game. The free throw missed, and Hoya Senior Jason Clark raced down the court and put up a three-point attempt to force overtime, but the shot missed.

Two key Hoyas have played their final games on the hilltop. Jason Clark finished with 10 points on 3-11 FG, and Henry Sims, who dealt with foul trouble for most of the game, managed 4 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and one blocked shot in 21 minutes in his last game as a Hoya.

The Hoyas used their standard efficient offense and tight defense to methodically pull away for what ended up being a comfortable win. Georgetown was led by Jason Clark's game-high 21 points while Otto Porter added 16 points and 8 rebounds. In his final NCAA Tournament, Clark made sure that the Hoyas got off to a good start going 5-6 to open the game with 13 points in the opening 11:06.
Georgetown will advance to play NC State, the Midwest Region’s 11th seed, on Sunday. NC State defeated San Diego State University 79-65 earlier in the day.

The Georgetown Hoyas squandered a double-digit second half lead and were eliminated from the Big East Tournament in double overtime by the Cincinnati Bearcats 70-72. In a match-up of two of the toughest defensive teams in the nation, neither team established much of a rhythm offensively. During the latter portion of the first half, the Hoyas began to create a little bit of separation on the scoreboard, as Cincinnati had a lot of trouble with the Hoyas’ zone defense. Georgetown led by six, 30-24, at the half.

In the second half, the Hoyas methodically pulled away, continuing the tough defense and slightly increasing their offensive productivity. Georgetown led by eleven with nine minutes remaining thanks to patience on offense and limiting the fast break points for the Bearcats. From that point however, the Hoyas stopped doing the things that earned them the large lead. Cincinnati went on a 6-0 run in less than 50 seconds, creating turnovers and turning them into fast break opportunities. The easy baskets gave Cincinnati confidence, and their half-court execution improved. The lead got smaller and smaller for the Hoyas, as a result of additional turnovers and poor free-throw shooting. On two separate occasions down the stretch, Markel Starks, one of the Hoyas more reliable free throw shooters, missed the front end of one and one situations which would have kept the Hoyas in front.

Yancey Gates was a one-man force in the paint for Cincinnati, finishing with a game high 23 points, helping the Bearcats take the lead in the final moments. Georgetown had the ball down by two in the final seconds when Henry Sims found an open Otto Porter who made a short jumper to tie the score with 3.4 seconds left and send the game into overtime. The teams traded baskets in OT, but again the Hoyas failed to take advantage of their opportunities as Sims went 0-2 from the line. Down by two points again in the final seconds, Sims made another critical play. With less than 3 seconds left, Sims had the ball at the top of the key, exploded to the basket, and put a layup in off the backboard as the clock expired, sending the game into double overtime.

In the second overtime, the story was much the same, Gates scoring for Cincinnati, and Sims with an opportunity to tie the game. The Hoyas had their final possession with 7 seconds left, down by 2 points. Jason Clark took the ball into the front court and gave it to Sims outside the arc. The potential game-winning shot form Sims was too strong and Cincinnati escaped, advancing to the semifinal to take on Syracuse.

Henry Sims led the Hoyas with 22 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, and freshman Otto Porter added 14 and 7. Unfortunately, neither Jason Clark nor Hollis Thompson provided much scoring in the defeat, as the two key players combined for 22 points off of 8-21 shooting. The Hoyas also left a lot of points at the line, going 53% from the stripe. Georgetown now must wait until Sunday afternoon to see where they land in the NCAA Tournament. Hoya Hoops will have all of Georgetown’s post-season information as soon as it becomes available.

The Georgetown Hoyas advanced to the quarterfinals of the Big East Tournament, defeating Pittsburgh 64-52. Georgetown was led by 20-point performances from both Henry Sims and Otto Porter, who also combined for 19 rebounds. Ashton Gibbs scored 14 points for the Panthers, who will miss out on the NCAA Tournament for the first time in over a decade.

The first half started with Pittsburgh grabbing an early lead, and the Panthers led 21-15 with six and a half minutes to go in the half, prompting Georgetown to use a timeout. Whatever Coach Thompson said to his team worked, as the Hoyas started to take control of the game, ending the half on 16-2 run to take a 31-23 lead into the break.

The Panthers opened the second half on a 6-0 run to cut the Georgetown lead to two, and it seemed as though we were in for a classic Big East battle the rest of the way. However, the Hoyas answered back with six straight points of their own to regain control of the game. Pittsburgh slowly faded from that point on, and Georgetown extended its lead to as many as 19 points before coasting to victory.

The Hoyas will now face Cincinnati in the quarterfinals of the Big East Tournament with a chance to avenge their 68-64 loss from earlier in the season. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 PM but will in all likelihood be delayed by the Connecticut v. Syracuse game which starts at 12 PM. Coverage for both games can be found on ESPN as well as ESPN3.com.

Georgetown lost at Marquette in their regular season finale, falling 69-83 to the Golden Eagles. Jae Crowder led all scorers with 26 while Hollis Thompson and Otto Porter each had 19 points in the losing effort.

It was a close game throughout much of the first half, but missed free throws and too many turnovers to the Marquette press put the Hoyas down 10 at the intermission. In the second half, the Hoyas fought to get back in the game but could never close the lead to less than eight points. Foul trouble plagued the Hoyas’ upperclassmen, and the Golden Eagles shot 20 more free throws than the Hoyas. With Henry Sims fouling out with almost 10 minutes left in the game, Otto Porter stepped up his game, scoring 13 second half points on his way to a career-high.

The Hoyas had the opportunity to earn a double-bye in the Big East Tournament, but with the loss, Georgetown falls to the #5 spot and will play the winner of the #12/#13 game on Wednesday at 2:00pm. That game will be on ESPN.

The Hoyas were without Markel Starks due to Coach’s decision yet played without missing a beat, improving to 1-5 in conference play. The Wildcats continue to struggle as they fall to 4-12 in the Big East.

As with most Big East contests, the game was physical from the start, with a stoppage of play just 34 seconds in due to a collision with Otto Porter and Maurice Sutton. The Hoyas took an early lead, stretching out to a 17 point advantage with 5:30 remaining in the half. But the Wildcats did not go away, putting together a 15-2 run over the span of four minutes to cut the Georgetown lead to four. The Hoyas went into the locker room up seven, 30-23.

The second half started the same way the first half ended, with scrappy play and lots of contact. The Hoyas slowly extended their lead, and Villanova was unable to stop the bleeding. The Hoyas led by as many as 24 before putting in the reserves for the final minutes of the game.

Georgetown will play its last home game of the season against Notre Dame on Big Monday. Tip-off between the Hoyas and the Irish will be at 7:00 PM, with coverage on ESPN.

No Georgetown player was in double figures, a testament to the team’s poor showing.

Georgetown scored the first basket of the game, but that might have been the high point for the Hoyas. The Pirates led for most of game, using a combination of outside shooting and inside scoring to take a 35-28 into the break.

Things only got worse for the Hoyas in the second half, as the Pirates continued their hot shooting, stretching the lead to as many as 22 points. Not only was Georgetown’s defense unable to stop Seton Hall, the Hoyas’ offense struggled mightily as well. After starting the game 4-5 from beyond the arc, the Hoyas went just 1-10 the rest of the way. Everything went wrong for the Hoyas, and as a result Georgetown suffered its most lopsided defeat of the season.

The Hoyas now have a pair of critical home games which will greatly impact their seed entering the Big East Tournament. Georgetown plays host to the Villanova Wildcats on Saturday at 2 PM, followed two days later with a game against Notre Dame on Big Monday. Both of the games will be televised in some form, with the Villanova game on CBS for those in the Big East market, while the showdown with the Fighting Irish can be seen on ESPN at 7 PM.

Georgetown led for the entire game, but the Red Storm were always in it, and it took a 40 minute effort for the Hoyas to get the win. D’Angelo Harrison led all scorers with 24 points for the Red Storm in the loss, while freshman Greg Whittingon had a career-high 12 for Georgetown.

The Hoyas charged out of the gates to take an early 11-4 lead, but the Red Storm were not flustered, using ball movement and penetration to jump-start their offense. The Hoyas led by five at the break, 31-26.

The second half started with some chippiness as the referees called a number of fouls early, including double technicals that gave Jason Clark his third foul. St. John’s shot 14 free throws in the second half which allowed them to stay in the game. But the Hoyas were able to keep the lead and used back-to-back-to-back three point possessions to gain some separating room and then held on down the stretch to get the win.

Next up for Georgetown is Providence. The Hoyas will play in Rhode Island on Saturday, February 18 at 7:00pm. The game will be televised locally on MASN.
