In what very likely could be the last ever Big East meeting between Georgetown and Syracuse at the Carrier Dome, the two arch-rivals did not disappoint. Forty minutes was not enough to settle this game, as the Hoyas fell just short in overtime, 64-61. Kris Joseph had a game-high 29 points to lead the Orange, including the game-winning three-pointer with under 30 seconds to go in overtime. Otto Porter came off the bench led the Hoyas with 14 points and 13 rebounds.

The game was incredibly close throughout, as no team led by more than six points the entire contest. The Hoyas pounded the offensive glass early on, outhustling Syracuse in the first half and earning a 31-27 lead at halftime.

Syracuse opened the second half on an 8-0 run in the first 90 seconds and for a moment it looked as though the Orange were about to take over, but the Hoyas responded with six straight point of their own. As the game wore on, the Hoyas again found themselves down, 55-51 with under four minutes to play. But, after a three from Jason Clark and a free throw from Greg Whittington, the score was tied with under a minute to go. And after Whittington got his own rebound after his missed second free throw, Georgetown looked like it might be able to settle the game the regulation. But, Henry Sims had his shot blocked, and Syracuse’s last shot was off the mark, and the two sides headed for overtime.

In the extra period, the Hoyas had the ball with the score tied and under a minute to play, but again the Hoyas would fail to convert. On the ensuing possession Joseph knocked down his sixth three of the game to give the Orange a three point lead. The Hoyas tried to get Jason Clark a look to tie but ended up turning the ball over. After two missed free throws by Syracuse, Hollis Thompson’s desperation three-pointer was well short.

The Hoyas look to bounce back against the Red Storm of St. John’s in a rematch of Georgetown’s 69-49 win from earlier this season. Tip-off on Sunday at Verizon Center against St. John’s is scheduled for 12 PM.

In a rare 11:00 am tip-off, the Georgetown Hoyas defeated the USF Bulls 75-45. The early start time may have affected the players' sharpness, as both teams shot poorly to start the game. Georgetown was only 8-23 from the field (34.8%) in the first half. However, the Hoyas looked hot compared to the awful start from the Bulls. They went through a stretch of nearly 11 minutes in the first half without a point and shot only 6-23 in the opening twenty minutes (26.1%). USF also committed 11 turnovers in the first half. Georgetown led 23-15 at halftime.

Georgetown led 23-15 at halftime.

The Hoyas turned things around very quickly in the second half. The Hoyas scored the first six points of the half, and kept the game out of reach, eventually extending to a 30-point lead. The scoring was very balanced for Georgetown, with five players in double figures, led by Henry Sims who scored 13.

Georgetown has now won two in a row, and five out of their last six. The winning streak will be put to the test on Wednesday night when they travel to the Carrier Dome to take on the top team in the Big East, the Syracuse Orange. The game is set to begin at 7:00 and will be broadcast on ESPN.

After a pair of poor shooting performances, the Hoyas decided to turn the tables, as they held Connecticut to its lowest scoring output of the season, as Georgetown triumphed over the Huskies 58-44. The Hoyas’ Big Three of Jason Clark, Henry Sims, and Hollis Thompson combined for 42 points, almost outscoring UCONN between the three of them. Andre Drummond had 18 points and seven rebounds for the Huskies, who have now lost four straight conference games and drop to under .500 in conference play.

Connecticut started the game out on fire, connecting on six of their first seven shots. But the Hoyas upped their defensive pressure, and the Huskies went stone cold from the field, going nearly 11 minutes without a field goal. Georgetown used the scoring drought to take a 10 point advantage into halftime.

The second half opened with both teams struggling to score at the onset. The Huskies slowly chipped away at the lead, eventually cutting to six points with 7 minutes left, forcing Coach Thompson to call timeout. At that point, it looked as though Georgetown was in for a dog fight the rest of the way. However, the Hoyas scored six quick points coming out of the timeout capped by a huge slam from Henry Sims to push the lead back to double figures, and the game was never close from that point on.

Next up for the Hoyas is South Florida, as Georgetown will play host to the Bulls Saturday at Verizon Center. The game will tip off at 11 AM EST with television coverage on ESPNU. Note the interesting start time, for those of you making the trip to Chinatown make sure you don’t show up at noon, or else you’ll miss the first half.

Nasir Robinson and Lamar Patterson combined to score 41 points on 15-17 shooting for the Panthers. Freshman reserve Otto Porter led the Hoyas with 14 points and six rebounds in the losing effort.

The Hoyas trailed 14-11 midway through the first half when the Panthers took off on a 15-1 run to push their lead to 17 points. Georgetown was held without a field goal for over seven minutes during that stretch but was able to cut the gap to 11 at the break, 33-22.

Georgetown rallied in the second half, quickly cutting the Pittsburgh lead to five just four minutes into the second half, and it looked as though the Hoyas were in prime shape to get back into the game. However, the Hoyas would never get any closer than that, as Panthers kept the Hoyas at arm’s length the rest of the way, eventually pulling away in the final minutes.

The Hoyas return to Verizon Center to play Connecticut on Wednesday night. Georgetown’s tip-off against the Huskies is scheduled for 7 PM with coverage on ESPN2.

The Hoyas survived one of their worst offensive performances of the season in an ugly 52-50 win over Rutgers. Georgetown shot 29.3% from the field, but was 25-36 from the free through stripe, including the two free throws from Otto Porter to give the Hoyas the lead with eight seconds to play. Eli Carter for Rutgers had 14 points to lead all scorers while Henry Sims led the Hoyas with 12 points and 10 rebounds, his first career double-double.

Georgetown’s offense was nonexistent in the first half, as they hit just three field goals, shooting 13% from the field and missing all eight threes. Free throws kept the Hoyas in the game, as the team went 14-18 from the line and went into the break trailing 25-20.

The Hoyas continued to struggle offensively, and fell behind 38-31 with just over 12 minutes to go in the game. But Georgetown responded, as Greg Whittington scored seven points in a row to tie the score. The game stayed close the rest of the way, with no team leading by more than two possessions.

The Hoyas were the beneficiary of two dubious calls in the final moments of the game to help them get the win. With the Hoyas down two, an offensive foul on Carter gave Georgetown the ball, and a midrange jumpshot by Otto Porter tied the game. Then following a miss by Rutgers, an off the ball hold on Mike Poole put Porter on the line with a chance to take the lead. He made both free throws, and Carter’s last second floater in the late bounced off the rim, giving Georgetown its third straight win.

The Hoyas now have the week off to work on their shooting before taking on Pittsburgh next Saturday. Tip-off between the Hoyas and the Panthers is scheduled for 4 PM.

Georgetown endured a tough battle against DePaul, beating the Blue Demons 83-75. It was a game of runs, as Georgetown led for most of the contest, but despite several attempts to put the game out of reach, was unable to sustain a double-figure lead. DePaul used a high-intensity press and its three-point shooting to keep the Blue Demons in the game. In the end, though, Georgetown won its second road game in three days to improve to 5-2 in conference play. Jason Clark, who celebrated his birthday the night before, had a career-high 31 points in the win, going an incredible 11-14 from the floor.

The Hoyas threatened to pull away a number of times on the night, but DePaul never quit. Georgetown led by 11 late in the first half only to see DePaul cut Georgetown’s lead to six at the break 37-31.

DePaul opened the second half with five quick points to cut the lead to one, but the Hoyas responded with a nine point run extend out to a 46-36 lead, and once again it looked as though Georgetown might run away with it. However, DePaul refused to go away, scoring eight points in under a minute to cut the lead back to two. But, the Hoyas were not shaken and were able to push the lead back out to eight and regain control. DePaul stayed within striking the distance the rest of the game, but Georgetown did a good job of keeping the opposition at arm’s length.

In addition to Clark’s career day, Henry Sims poured in 16 points before fouling out. Cleveland Melvin had 19 points to lead the Blue Demons, while Moses Morgan scored 15 of his 17 points from beyond the arc.

The Hoyas return home to Verizon Center after the two-game road trip to take on the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers. That game is slated for 12 PM on Saturday, with local televison coverage on MASN.

Moe Harkless had 21 points and 11 rebounds, both game-highs, for the Red Storm before fouling out with five minutes to play.

Both teams shot the ball poorly in a very physical first half, as the Hoyas found themselves down eight early and started the game just 4-20 from the field. But, Georgetown was able to right the ship, using a 12-0 run to regain the lead and take a six point advantage into the locker room, 25-19.

The second half saw Georgetown start to take control of the game. The team’s ball movement helped get open looks and St. John’s attempt to pick up the tempo backfired, as the Hoyas were able to get quick scores to increase the lead to as many as 12 midway through the second half. Offensive rebounding also played a key role for the Hoyas, as Georgetown grabbed 17 offensive boards that lead to second chance points.

The Red Storm did not give up, however, and were able to cut the lead to three with six minutes left. But, the Hoyas responded with a three pointer on the ensuing possession to start a 12-2 run that put the game out of reach.

The Hoyas stay on the road, as Georgetown travels to Chicago to take on DePaul. Tip-off against the Blue Demons is set for 7 PM, with coverage on ESPN2.

Despite the Hoyas’ leading for most of the second half, Cincinnati went ahead 60-59 with 2:12 remaining, leading to a tense final minutes. Two free throws by Henry Sims put the Hoyas back in front, but a close goaltending call against Sims made it 62-61 for the Bearcats. After some free throws for each side, Georgetown found themselves down by two with the ball but could not convert on two opportunities down the stretch. Free throws from Dion Dixon sealed the victory for the Bearcats who have now won three straight against the Hoyas.

Cincinnati’s Sean Kilpatrick led all scorers with 27, while Jason Clark and Hollis Thompson led the Hoyas with 14 apiece.
The Georgetown Hoyas dropped their first conference game of the season with a road defeat at the hands of the West Virginia Mountaineers. The 74-62 loss ended Georgetown's 11-game winning streak, the longest since 2006-07.

The Georgetown Hoyas dropped their first conference game of the season with a road defeat at the hands of the West Virginia Mountaineers. The 74-62 loss ended Georgetown’s 11-game winning streak, the longest since 2006-07. West Virginia was led by their two excellent seniors Kevin Jones (22 points, 16 rebounds) and Truck Bryant (game-high 25 points). Entering play this weekend, Jones was leading the Big East conference in both scoring and rebounding. Hollis Thompson led the Hoyas in scoring with 20 points on 7-13 from the field.

With two of the top defensive teams in the conference going head to head, the scoring started off slowly for both teams. Georgetown’s full court defense forced West Virginia into several early turnovers, while the Mountaineers smothering half court defense never allowed the Hoyas to get into rhythm on offense. The game was close throughout the first half and West Virginia was ahead by two at halftime 29-27.

The teams traded baskets for the first few minutes of the second half; then West Virginia moved in front with an 11-4 run. The Mountaineers scored back to back buckets on follow dunks, then Bryant scored twice, and Jones added a three-pointer to lead by seven. Georgetown responded to get within three, but West Virginia surged forward again, extending to their largest lead of 13 points with four and a half minutes left. The Hoyas went on a frantic 9-0 run over the next two minutes to cut the deficit to 4 at 62-58, but West Virginia scored the next basket of the game and closed the game by going 10-10 from the free throw line.

The Hoyas return home to Verizon center for a Monday night match-up against Cincinnati; tip off is set for 9pm.

The Georgetown Hoyas won their 11th straight game, this time in dramatic fashion, as they came back from a 17-point 2nd half deficit to beat the Marquette Golden Eagles 73-70. The Hoyas were led by senior Jason Clark who played the entire second half and led all scorers with 26 points.

After starting off the game hot, converting on their first six shot attempts, the Hoyas struggled to keep control of the ball, committing 12 first half turnovers. The Golden Eagles took advantage and went on a 20-5 run to close out the half, going into halftime leading the Hoyas by 14, 43-29.

To start the second half, Clark played as if he had something to prove, being very aggressive on defense, getting his hand on the ball each time it passed by him, and forcing turnovers and grabbing rebounds on the first possessions. Despite going on mini-runs, Georgetown could not break into the Marquette lead, and with 13:13 remaining, a Todd Mayo three-pointer gave the Golden Eagles their largest lead, 56-39.

But the Hoyas did not give up, and thanks to a defensive spark from a lineup of Clark and freshmen Otto Porter, Greg Whittington, Jabril Trawick, and Mikael Hopkins, the lead was cut to single digits. With five minutes remaining, Hollis Thompson returned to the game and scored eight critical points, going 3-3 in the final 3:13, including a well-defended three-pointer from the corner with 24 seconds left to give the Hoyas the 73-70 lead they would hold until the final buzzer.

Georgetown shot an incredible 76.2% from the field in the second half, only missing five shots. After Clark’s 26, Thompson added 16 points, and Henry Sims had 13. Darius Johnson-Odom scored 18 points for the Golden Eagles in the loss.

The Hoyas’ next game is on Saturday at West Virginia. Tipoff is scheduled for noon, with the game being televised locally on MASN.
