Georgetown vs. Connecticut: 01/09/2010
| Team | 1 | 2 | T |
| Connecticut (#13) | 40 | 29 | 69 |
| Georgetown (#12) | 25 | 47 | 72 |
Hey everyone, Johnny here at Verizon Center getting ready for the Big East conference game between the #12 Georgetown Hoyas and the #13 Connecticut Huskies.
The Hoyas are coming off of a tough road loss at Marquette, while the Huskies are riding a two-game winning streak.
The Phone Booth is slowly filling up, but for the first time several weeks, the GU Pep band is back and the student sections are going to be a little more full with classes starting back up this week.
I’ll be checking back in with info, but for now here’s what I’ve got:
Hoyas look to be starting the same five: Wright, Clark, Freeman, Vauhgn, and Monroe.
Connecticut will be staring Majok, Dyson, Walker, Robinson, and Oriakhi.
The refs today are going to be Mike Kitts, Bob Donato, and Tony Greene.

So, it looks like only one of the student sections is gonna be for students, as the other side has just regular fans along side the band.
But the cheerleaders are back, and the section behind me has more students than it has in the past few games.

On the big screen, they just showed Roy’s big three against UCONN from two years ago – the last time the two teams met here at Verizon Center.
January 9th, 2010 at 11:54 am
Patrick Ewing Jr. just took a seat in front of me on the baseline, and Coach came over to give him a hug.
January 9th, 2010 at 11:54 am
And now Sam Cassell is talking with Pat.
January 9th, 2010 at 12:03 pm
Hoyas win the tip and turn it over on their first possession.
January 9th, 2010 at 12:04 pm
On the other end, Austin gets a steal and is fouled by Jerome Dyson.
January 9th, 2010 at 12:05 pm
And then Austin starts the scoring with two free throws after he was fouled on a drive.
January 9th, 2010 at 12:10 pm
Nice backdoor to Wright picks up an easy two. The last attempt was a good pass but a missed layup.
January 9th, 2010 at 12:10 pm
Crazy putback dunk by Robinson.
January 9th, 2010 at 12:12 pm
Vaughn got hammered on one end with no call, and then on the ensuing break, Clark tried to draw a charge but got called for the block.
The fans here were not happy.
We’re at the 16:00 timeout with the Hoyas down by three 12-9.
January 9th, 2010 at 12:23 pm
The crowd is going crazy here. Coach subbed out Wright and Monroe for a more defensive unit, and the Hoyas have quickly gotten a few steals and blocks.
January 9th, 2010 at 12:28 pm
A little run from UCONN and Coach needs a timeout. Hoyas are trailing 19-25.
January 9th, 2010 at 12:31 pm
Jiffy Lube Trivia Question:
Georgetown’s single game record for defensive rebounds was established vs Connecticut on March 8, 1991. Which Hoya holds the record with 18 against the Huskies?
A. Patrick Ewing
B. Dikembe Mutombo
C. Merlin Wilson
D. Othella Harrington
January 9th, 2010 at 12:31 pm
Looking around the arena, I see (besides Pat and Sam Cassell) Georgetown Prep senior/Hoya commit Markell Starks and Hoya alums Ryan Beale and Amadou Kilkenny-Diaw
January 9th, 2010 at 12:35 pm
UCONN is on a 13-0 run.
January 9th, 2010 at 12:36 pm
16-0 run makes it 34-19, and Coach calls another timeout.
January 9th, 2010 at 12:37 pm
Hoyas haven’t scored in nearly 5 and a half minutes and the Connecticut fans in the Verizon Center are trying to make some noise.
January 9th, 2010 at 12:42 pm
This is the SLOWEST “Dress Like a Hoya” contest I’ve ever seen.
January 9th, 2010 at 12:42 pm
And the dude who made the shot didn’t put on his shoes.
January 9th, 2010 at 12:43 pm
The Hoyas cannot afford to give up 16 straight against UCONN. It’s gonna be an uphill battle the rest of the way.
January 9th, 2010 at 12:47 pm
At the half, the Hoyas are in a hole, down 25-40.
January 9th, 2010 at 1:00 pm
Looking at stats, Hoyas were outrebounded by 10, and shot under 30% from the field, going 2-10 from beyond the arc. Not good.
January 9th, 2010 at 1:04 pm
2 more points for Robinson to start the 2nd half.
January 9th, 2010 at 1:08 pm
4 quick points for Austin, and the crowd is loud again.
January 9th, 2010 at 1:11 pm
The crowd here is going wild for Austin. After the two quick buckets, he got a rebound and then an offensive rebound. He missed his put back, but on the next trip hit a three.
Calhoun needed a timeout to stop him.
January 9th, 2010 at 1:13 pm
Another three points for Austin Three-man
January 9th, 2010 at 1:14 pm
And the Hoyas have cut the lea to 6, Calhoun needs another timeout. 14-3 run from the Hoyas to start the 2nd half.
January 9th, 2010 at 1:21 pm
Clear missed call on a goaltending there. I don’t know what they were watching on that one.
January 9th, 2010 at 1:22 pm
That one the goaltended it into the basket. It didn’t matter either way.
January 9th, 2010 at 1:27 pm
Austin Freeman has 17 second half points in 9 minutes and 4 seconds. The Hoyas had 25 in the entire first half.
January 9th, 2010 at 1:28 pm
It’s time for Jack to “eat that box”
January 9th, 2010 at 1:32 pm
Two missed free throws from Greg, but an offensive rebound from Hollis gave him two the hard way.
January 9th, 2010 at 1:34 pm
Great steal by Greg reading the passing lanes, but he stepped out of bounds trying to keep it in on the sideline.
January 9th, 2010 at 1:34 pm
Three pointer from Wright ties the score at 55.
January 9th, 2010 at 1:35 pm
Hoyas now winning 57-55, but Clark picked up foul #4. There are 8:01 remaining.
January 9th, 2010 at 1:37 pm
At the 8 minute timeout, Hoyas are winning by two 57-55. They were trailing 40-21 right before halftime.
That’s a 36-17 run over 13:22.
It will be Hoyas ball after another steal by Greg.
January 9th, 2010 at 1:41 pm
After a whole game of dunks from Stanley Robinson, the Hoyas have a fastbreak alley-oop to Greg.
January 9th, 2010 at 1:41 pm
Austin has 30 points. Career-high by a whole bunch.
January 9th, 2010 at 1:43 pm
At the four minute timeout, the game’s tied up at 63, but Oriaki will be shooting one free throw when we come back.
January 9th, 2010 at 1:51 pm
Chris Wright now has four fouls too, and Oriakhi will be shooting 1 and 1.
January 9th, 2010 at 1:52 pm
Oriakhi hit them both, Georgetown dribbled towards half-court (pretty sure they didn’t cross) and called timeout.
Hoyas trailing by 1, 68-69, with 1:07 to play.
January 9th, 2010 at 1:54 pm
Vaughn puts back a Monroe miss to put the Hoyas back up, and UCONN calls a timeout with 40.4 seconds remaining.
January 9th, 2010 at 1:57 pm
After two offensive rebounds by the Huskies, Wright comes away with a steal. Connecticut tries to foul/get a steal, and Hoyas rush the ball to Greg for two. Empty three-point attempt by the Huskies, give the Hoyas the win 72-69
January 9th, 2010 at 2:00 pm
Hoyas beat Connecticut 72-69 at the Verizon Center thanks to some last minute heroics by a Georgetown big man. Sound familiar?
