The Georgetown Hoyas defeated the Providence Friars 82-75 to end their two-game losing skid. The win means the Hoyas are back to .500 in conference play and also gives the Friars their first conference loss of the season.
The Hoyas started off sluggishly, falling behind by as many as nine points, but closed the half on a 6-1 run to trail by three at the break, 36-33.
Georgetown picked up their play in the second half, using a 15-0 run over a six minute span to turn a four point deficit into an 11 point lead. The Hoyas eventually stretched the lead to 16, but a late Providence run cut the margin to three with under two minutes to play. Late free throws and defensive rebounds secured the win for the Hoyas.
Georgetown had five players score in double figures, led by Austin Freeman’s 18 on 7-11 shooting. Greg Monroe had a huge all-around game, with 13 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists, five steals, and two blocks.
The Hoyas now play host to their bitter rivals, the Syracuse Orange. Tip-off is Wednesday at 7:30 PM at Verizon Center.
