We’re less than an hour away from tipoff between the Georgetown Hoyas and the West Virginia Mountaineers, back in Big East action. Johnny here from Verizon Center, and the crowd is juuust starting to show up. Right now, it’s me, the first round of students, and about 12 other fans in their seats.

The loss against Duke is still on a lot of Hoya fans’ minds, but there’s a game at hand, and Big East play is much more important than any non-conference game at this point. The Hoyas, 3-2 in the league, are in the middle of the pack right now, and another home win against a top-tier opponent is crucial to keep this team on the right side of the table.

After today, the Hoyas head on the road for three away games in one seven-day span. Heading into that road trip, I’m sure Georgetown wants a big victory at home to keep negative thoughts at bay. We’ll have to see how this one goes, as the Hoyas have not been playing their best ball consistently.

As usual, I’ll fill you in with whatever I see here courtside and we welcome any and all comments below.

  1. Johnny Says:

Starting lineups? Here’s what I’ve got so far (they may change without notice)

Hoyas: the usual 5 (NOT the 5 who started the 2nd Half against Duke)
Summers, Wright, Monroe, Freeman, and Sapp

    Mountaineers:
Butler, Ebanks, Ruoff, Bryant, and Smith

  2. Johnny Says:

And the refs are Mike Stephens, Jamie Luckie, and Bob Donato

  3. Johnny Says:

Again, Hollis Thompson is warming up with the team (but still not on the roster) and Jansen is in a suit.

  4. Let's Go Hoyas Says:

    Is Hollis knocking down shots?

  5. Johnny Says:

Ha, that’s a good question. To be honest, I haven’t been watching him take any jump shots. He made his layups. I’ll check it out for you next time the team comes out.

Now, though, Jack the Bulldog is making some jumpshots. (The tall jack, not the four-legged one)

  6. Johnny Says:

So, Let’s Go Hoyas, to answer your question: yes, he is knocking down his shots. In fact, the only person to miss while I was watching was DaJuan Summers. On a dunk attempt.

  7. Johnny Says:

Anthem, done. Lineups, done. Game time.

  8. Johnny Says:

Greg wins the tip and misses on the first possession.

  9. Johnny Says:

    Wright starts the scoring. 2-0

  10. DJ Says:

not that graet a start on offense, but good d

  11. Mike Says:

mike here, student section looks pretty sparse, maybe some students extended the long inauguration weekend into a week vacation.

  12. Johnny Says:

Slow start for both teams, and the Hoyas are up 6-2 at the first official timeout.

Fr. McFadden’s mic is giving lots of feedback in case you were wondering.

  13. Johnny Says:

So Jason has some trouble handling the ball again today, and as he scrambles after the loose ball, the refs give him an intentional foul. Everyone is confused

  14. DJ Says:

    most.absurd.call.ever.

  15. Johnny Says:

Mountaineers get their first lead of the game, 12-11.

  16. DJ Says:

wahts with all the bizarre techs/intentionals?? dajuan, coach, greg, now jason

  17. Johnny Says:

Omar comes in and immediately draws a charge. Then he scores 2.

  18. Johnny Says:

    Jiffy Lube Trivia Question:
Who currently leads the Hoyas in scoring at 15.5 points per game?
    A. Greg Monroe
    B. Chris Wright
    C. DaJuan Summers
    D. Austin Freeman

  19. DJ Says:

    nice extra pass from jessie

  20. Johnny Says:

2:52 left in the first half and the Hoyas trail by 2, 24-22.

  21. Mike Says:

Sloppy play, the Hoyas are lucky not to be down by a lot more.

  22. Johnny Says:

Vaughn turns it over, Ebanks gets a breakaway dunk, Thompson calls a timeout, and the Verizon Center is getting too loud…lots of Mountaineer fans here.

  23. Mike Says:

Dasean bulter has half of the mountaineers points. The hoyas have to slow him down in the second half.

  24. Johnny Says:

Mike says Hoyas could be down more, Mountaineers score 7 straight, but Georgetown ends the half with the last four, only trailing 31-26.

The refs are having a big impact today. It’s not helping either team, but they seem to want to make their mark by calling ticky tack fouls and traveling and by turning no calls into intentionals.

  25. DJ Says:

lets go hoyas. need to come out strong

  26. Johnny Says:

Wright has a lack of concentration on what should have been an easy two, and Sapp gets his third foul as a result.

  27. Johnny Says:

16:00 timeout, Hoyas down 6, 39-33. Just when it looks like thing are going right for Georgetown, sloppy mistakes send them back in a hole.

  28. DJ Says:

not exactly the start i was looking for, but keep fighting hoyas

  29. Johnny Says:

Wattad hits a backdoor layup to cut the lead to two, and Austin Freeman pumps his arms to get the crowd louder from the bench. Then the place gets as loud as its been all season, maybe as loud as I’ve ever heard it, and Huggins calls a timeout.

Hoyas trail 43-45, with 11:33 to go.

  30. DJ Says:

    greg drawing a charge??

  31. Johnny Says:

Hoyas had three opportunities to tie or take the lead, but they missed on threes every time. Now the Mountaineers are up 6 thanks to consecutive buckets.

  32. DJ Says:

    things just keep getting worse

  33. Johnny Says:

Georgetown’s down 11, and while there’s still plenty of game left (5 minutes), I just don’t think the Hoyas have it in them

  34. Johnny Says:

Sorry about my lack of comments. The wifi here at Verizon Center has been a lot like Georgetown’s play today. Spotty at best.

  35. Johnny Says:

That’s game. Hoyas lose 75-58. Not a very good performance by the boys in gray. And as it always seems to happen the obnoxious West Virginia fans will celebrate in the Verizon Center corridors.
