Georgetown vs. Rutgers: 02/03/2009
| Team | 1 | 2 | T |
| Rutgers | 18 | 29 | 47 |
| Georgetown | 27 | 30 | 57 |
Hey everybody, Johnny here, glad to be back at Verizon Center after a rough road stretch with three consecutive losses. But after those disappointing performances, I’m sure the Hoyas have come home ready to play. And the home fans should be doing their best to add another game to the win column for the Boys in Gray. After all, it is costume day.
We’ve got a bit over 20 minutes before tipoff, and the Verizon Center is slowly filling up. Right now, both teams are warming up and the refs are doing their awkward looking stretches. On that note, here are the starting lineups and referees tonight:
For the Hoyas, it’s the usual five: Summers, Wright, Monroe, Freeman, and Sapp
For the Scarlet Knights, it’s Echenique, Chandler, Farmer, Rosario, and N’diaye. tonight are Jim Haney, Jamie Luckie, and Bryan Kersey.
I’ll be posting updates in the comments; you know the drill.

Come on Hoyas lets start winning again
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:00 pm
There was the anthem, sung by a grad student Jon Healy, not Dr. Vincent Kelly.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:03 pm
Alright, it’s game time, and the lower bowl is not entirely full, but not a bad turnout for a Tuesday night game against Rutgers.
I don’t see any students in costume though, just the girls behind me wearing animal pajama pants with their We Are Georgetown shirts.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:05 pm
Georgetown loses the tip, but they get a stop on the first possession.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:05 pm
Echenique muscles his way in to start the scoring, 2-0 Rutgers.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:08 pm
A bunch of empty possessions and it’s still 2-2. DaJuan just picked up an offensive foul on a reckless drive and dish.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:10 pm
DaJuan picks up his second, Hoyas are 1-7, 0-3 from downtown, and it’s the official timeout. Score? 2-2. 15:59 in the first half remain.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:10 pm
need to be smart on offense!
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:11 pm
Looks like Nikita in for Summers.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:13 pm
Big East Rookie of the Week Mike Rosario just started scoring. He hit a three from the corner.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:14 pm
Nikita goes backdoor, makes the layup, and lands hard on the floor. No call, though.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:14 pm
Jessie knocks down the Hoyas’ first three.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:14 pm
way to go sappy
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:16 pm
Strong take by Freeman gives the Hoyas their first lead 9-8.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:17 pm
gotta grab the rebound there
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:18 pm
Official timeout, Hoyas up 11-10.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:22 pm
Where’s Wattad? He is usually good for an early three…
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:25 pm
Wattad and Sims are the only ones on the bench without any time on the court so far. Monroe checking back in for Vaughn who picked up two quick ones.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:25 pm
Get Sims in for Vaughn
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:25 pm
I think you got your wish Let’s Go Hoyas. Coach Kenya Hunter talked with him for a seond, and now Sims is checking in for Nikita.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:27 pm
There’s three-pointer #2 for the Hoyas. This one by Jason Clark.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:27 pm
hows that not intentional?
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:28 pm
After the three, Clark rips the ball away on the other end, launches a long pass to Greg who gets hammered going up for a dunk. Lots of people were asking for intentional to no avail.
Wattad checking in for Freeman.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:29 pm
There you go Sims… Get tough
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:29 pm
Sims makes a runner and gets fouled, and that gets the crowd excited. 19-14 Hoyas, 8 minute timeout.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:29 pm
thats what i wanna see out of smis
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:31 pm
Jiffy Lube Trivia Question:
Which of the following players did NOT wear #33 while with the Hoyas?
A. Patrick Ewing Jr.
B. Patrick Ewing
C. Roy Hibbert
D. Alonzo Mourning
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:31 pm
Mike here in section 120. Strong take there by Sims. Coach using a lot of bodies tonight, all 10 scholarships have already seen action.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:32 pm
That’s everyone in uniform Mike, since Jansen still has an injured foot and Hollis Thompson is nowhere to be seen tonight.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:35 pm
Great hustle that time from the Hoyas as they fought for loose ball after loose ball until Chris Wright eventually ended up with it. The coaching staff all stood up to clap for the effort which was notably absent these past few games.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:37 pm
great job fighting out there hoyas. now score more points!
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:38 pm
There is NO reason that we should lose to these guys…
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:39 pm
Time to put Summers back in…
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:39 pm
Freeman tried to inbound the ball off the back of the defender, but he turned it over. Then Nikita dove to try to steal it back and picked up foul #2.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:40 pm
nice rebounding sims
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:41 pm
Sims will go to the line to shoot two after the 4 minute timeout. Hoyas up 22-16.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:43 pm
Let’s Go Hoyas, looks like Coach Thompson’s keeping Nikita in there. I guess three fouls on Meschariakov is better than risking three on Summers.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:45 pm
As long as we keep building on this lead.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:45 pm
Offensive foul is #3 on Nikita. It was a weird accidental collision, and Coach quickly goes to Freeman to check in.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:48 pm
Perfect backdoor / stop, pull up layup. But they call an offensive on Freeman and take away the basket.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:49 pm
Great play there. Sapp posting up, dishes to Monroe when he gets double teamed in the post, and then a quick pass from Greg to Sims for a layup. Nice passing in tight quarters.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:49 pm
agreed–def nice passingthere
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:51 pm
Sapp gets a backdoor layup and contests Rutgers last shot to end the half. Nice work from Jessie who has 6 points off of 2-2 from the field and 1-2 from the line.
Hoyas head to the locker room up 27-18. I think that’s the first time they’ve lead at the half since Syracuse.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:53 pm
Sorry, Hoyas were up by 1 against Seton Hall at the break.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:53 pm
nice half… keep it up, no second half letups where the other team score 12 in a row.
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:07 pm
Hoyas have the ball to start the second, and with the shotclock winding down, Jessie knocks down a three pointer. 30-18 Georgetown.
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:12 pm
Summers finally gets his first points of the game – a three pointer.
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:13 pm
Sapp misses a transition layup and then on the ensuing fast break, Wright gets called for a block. It’s the 16:00 timeout with the Hoyas leading 35-21. Scarlet Knights to shoot two when we get back.
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:20 pm
Transition three for Clark, defensive stop, three for Nikita, and now it’s a twenty point game, Hoyas up 43-23.
Rutgers timeout.
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:20 pm
keep it up hoyas
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:22 pm
They’re showing some Hoya fans in Mike’s section 120 wearing Obama Hope shirts that have Coach Thompson’s face with HOYA instead of Hope on the front and a YES III CAN and a G instead of the Obama O on the back.
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:25 pm
Nikita picks up foul #4.
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:26 pm
Strange play there, as Monroe spun baseline drove to the basket and passed it to Summers (a little behind Monroe) for a mid-range jumper.
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:26 pm
Foul #3 on DaJuan
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:28 pm
And it’s box eating time!
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:29 pm
Sapp, Clark, Freeman, Summers, and Sims are in for the Hoyas.
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:30 pm
That’s how you pick apart a zone. Layup for Jessie, who’s leading the Hoyas with 11 points.
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:32 pm
This is only the fourth time that Sapp’s scored in double figures this year, the last time being all the way back on December 8 against Savannah State. Wow.
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:36 pm
Sloppy few minutes give Rutgers a mini run, and as we go into the 8 minute timeout, the lead is only 13 for the Hoyas, 49-36.
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:38 pm
So, the three fan of the game contestants are Spider-Man / Referee with Tye Die, Cheetah Girl, and S’mores.
Winner of Fan of the Game and the Costume Contest tickets to Big East Tournament are the girls dressed like s’mores.
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:38 pm
no more let ups hoyas. lets close this one out please
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:41 pm
Hoyas push it back to 17 and RU uses another timeout.
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:48 pm
Hoyas are up 56-42 at the 4:00 timeout, but there’s only 1:53 left in the game, and I don’t think Rutgers has it in them to pull this one out.
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:52 pm
Rutgers cuts it to ten, Nikita fouls out and gets a nice ovation, and N’diaye is going to the line to shoot one. There are only 52.1 seconds left.
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:52 pm
Rutgers uses their last timeout, down nine. Still 52.1 to go in the game.
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:53 pm
finish this please.. come on hoyas
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:56 pm
Looks like the Hoyas are gonna dribble this one out. 57-47 – the first Hoya victory since January 14.
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:59 pm
finally a win hoyas. now lets keep this streak going
