| Georgetown (#11) | 31 | 38 | 69 |
Georgetown stretched their winning streak to eight games with a 69-60 victory over Marquette in front of over 14,000 fans at the Verizon Center Sunday afternoon. On a day when the Hoyas trailed for most of the game, Georgetown fought their way to victory through hustle plays and tight defense.
Nate Lubick hit two free throws to tie the game at 2-2 a minute and a half into the game. After that, Marquette controlled the rest of the 1st half as Georgetown struggled from three, and couldn’t gather rebounds after stops. The Golden Eagle lead stretched to nine, but at that point, the Hoyas went on a 5-0 run to close out the half trailing 31-35.
To start the second half, Austin Freeman was on the bench, having just gotten his right ankle taped up from an injury sustained at the end of the half. Halftime was a stressful fifteen minutes for Hoya fans, but once Austin returned, he removed those fears by scoring eight second half points on 4-9 shooting.
Hollis Thompson, the impromptu second half starter, provided a much needed spark, passing his previous high of 10 rebounds in the second half alone. Grabbing defensive rebounds was just what the Hoyas needed to ensure victory, as after scoring 10 2nd chance points in the first half, the Golden Eagles were held to 0 in the second. The Hoyas pulled ahead by ten points and coasted to victory in the closing minutes.
The Hoyas have now improved to 9-4 in the conference and have just picked up their 20th overall win. Next up for Georgetown is a game at Connecticut on Wednesday night.
