For the first time in 2009, the Georgetown Hoyas won a road game, defeating the South Florida Bulls 65-40. The Hoyas used a 19-4 run over the final eight minutes of the first half to open a 19-point lead. Georgetown was never threatened in the second half. The Hoyas were led by Chris Wright’s 17 points and Greg Monroe’s double-double performance.
A combination of good Georgetown defense and terrible South Florida shooting enabled the Hoyas to lead from the outset. The first field goal for the Bulls came with 13:47 remaining in the first half. Meanwhile, the Hoyas were getting contributions for everyone as six Hoyas scored in the first half. Jessie Sapp scored eight points in a 1:07 span to help the Hoyas pull ahead. South Florida’s leading scorer Dominique Jones scored ten of the Bulls 17 first half points, but he managed only two points in the final ten minutes of the half. Georgetown led 34-17 at the break.
In the second half, Georgetown coasted, eventually leading by as many as 27. The balanced offense continued for the Hoyas who dominated every offensive category: points in the paint 44-26, fast break points 16-0, 3PT% 42.9-8.3.
Georgetown returns home for two critical games against top teams from the Big East as the Hoyas host Marquette on Saturday at 2pm and Louisville two days later on ESPN’s Big Monday.
