Georgetown vs. Marquette: 02/21/2009
| Team | 1 | 2 | T |
| Marquette (#10) | 44 | 34 | 78 |
| Georgetown | 44 | 28 | 72 |
Hey everybody, Johnny here at Verizon Center. We’ve got about one hour before tipoff between your Georgetown Hoyas and the Marquette Golden Eagles. The Hoyas are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the 1984 National Championship team and several players from that team will be here to be honored at halftime.
Until then though, the matter at hands is this Marquette team who are not going to roll over for the Hoyas, regardless of how many rings are in attendance.
Right now, the Golden Eagles are doing their layup lines with one of the coaches pushing them and hitting them with a padded shield. It looks kind of ridiculous, but whatever gets you ready for the game I guess.
I’ll be filling you all in with whatever you need to know, and you can feel free to post thoughts and questions in the comments. I’ll be back with starting lineups and refs shortly.

Sorry everybody, my internet was acting up for a while there, so I’m not sure how good it will be during the game.
We’re close to the starting lineups and the anthem, and here’s the info I got:
For the Hoyas, it looks like Sapp will be coming off the bench once again, as Nikita gets the starting nod:
Summers, Wright, Mescheriakov, Monroe, and Freeman.
For the Golden Eagles, it’s gonna be
James, Burke, McNeal, Matthews, and Hayward.
And the refs are going to be Ed Hightower, Pat Driscoll, and Tim Clougherty

Mike here in section 120. The Hoyas have very little margin of error in their last five games. A win here would certainly help the cause and add a little boost to the team’s confidence. The Hoyas found their groove against south Florida, let’s hope they can keep the ball rolling.

A final in Big East action – 101-84 Notre Dame over Providence. Wow.
February 21st, 2009 at 2:08 pm
Jessie might not have the starting position, but he’s still on top in the students’ hearts. They were chanting “JES-SIE-SAPP!” before the starting lineups were announced.
February 21st, 2009 at 2:08 pm
Looks like tip off won’t happen til about 2:10. Pehaps to let the ESPN game that started at 12:00 finish.
February 21st, 2009 at 2:10 pm
And Jessie just gave the students his signature hand gesture. Kinda looks like this:

And that’s if he had really phenomenally long arms and short legs.
February 21st, 2009 at 2:12 pm
Hoyas lose the tip, and get two stops on the first possession (giving up an offensive rebound in between)
February 21st, 2009 at 2:12 pm
Nikita starts the scoring with a three from his favorite spot on the court. Maybe his favorite spot in the world based on his last two away games.
February 21st, 2009 at 2:16 pm
Foul #2 on Nikita.
February 21st, 2009 at 2:17 pm
Foul #3 on Nikita – this one very weak, and Sapp comes in to replace him.
February 21st, 2009 at 2:24 pm
Matthews is lighting it up early shooting 3-4 from 3
February 21st, 2009 at 2:29 pm
A high tempo game so far, both teams on pace to score 100.
February 21st, 2009 at 2:34 pm
It’s the 8 minute timeout, Georgetown trailing 30-27, but both teams are shooting over 60% from the field.
February 21st, 2009 at 2:35 pm
Who was Georgetown’s leading scorer in the 1984 National Championship game in the Hoyas’ 84-75 win over Houston?

B. Reggie Williams

D. David Wingate

The Jiffy Lube Trivia Question was #5 on our list of 5 Things Every Hoya Fan Should Know about the 1984 National Championship team.
February 21st, 2009 at 2:37 pm
HUGE block from Jason Clark on Dominic James in transition.
February 21st, 2009 at 2:46 pm
Internet’s struggling but the Hoyas, down four, have been showing tons of energy. One one possession Georgetown grabbed four offensive rebounds before scoring
Sapp and Clark have been huge bursts from the bench
February 21st, 2009 at 2:48 pm
Three from Summers gives the Hoyas the lead 39-38 and the crowd is loving the Hoyas’ performance so far.
February 21st, 2009 at 2:53 pm
Sapp gets his fourth rebound of the half, and knocks down a three with under a minute to go in the 1st.
February 21st, 2009 at 2:54 pm
James gets trapped in the corner with 6 seconds to go and uses a timeout, but Marquette’s already used their free first half TO, so he’s using one of their second half allotment.
February 21st, 2009 at 2:56 pm
Coming out of the timeout, Marquette gets a three to tie the game heading into the half. There was some defensive miscommunication there as they shouldn’t have gotten an open look with only 6 seconds.
February 21st, 2009 at 2:57 pm
To honor the 1984 National Championship team, they’re showing clips from what I believe is “Decade of the Eighties,” the Hoyas’ documentary on the big screen here at Verizon Center.
February 21st, 2009 at 3:02 pm
Now they’re playing Queen’s “We Are the Champions” while listing the roster like end credits.
February 21st, 2009 at 3:05 pm
Manager David Green
#32 Horace Broadnax
#52 Ralph Dalton
#55 Victor Morris
#50 Michael Graham
#30 Michael Jackson
#24 Bil Martin
#22 Captain Gene Smith
Are all here and are at center court, receiving commemorative crystal bowls.
February 21st, 2009 at 3:06 pm
And on the big screen, they showed a video message from Patrick Ewing who couldn’t make it due to “work obligations” with the Orlando Magic.
“When I think back at 84, the comraderie of the team, of the university, brings fond memories back to my mind. It was a great experience. We had a lot of hardships that year, but we overcame it and prevailed, becoming National Champions. The guys I played with are still my friends to today. My whole college experience was wonderful.”
February 21st, 2009 at 3:13 pm
I just saw Evan Chvotkin and he said, “Looks like a Wizards game out there.” I think he was talking about the high shooting percentage of both teams and the high tempo you’d see in the NBA. I hope he didn’t mean the Verizon Center’s home team were on track to lose a heartbreaker.
February 21st, 2009 at 3:19 pm
WOW. Monster dunk from Austin Freeman after he missed a whole bunch of them in an impromptu dunk contest when the Hoyas were warming up.
February 21st, 2009 at 3:21 pm
16:00 timeout with the Hoyas leading 52-47.
February 21st, 2009 at 3:26 pm
Foul #3 on Clark, and Summers checks back in.
February 21st, 2009 at 3:31 pm
Hoyas only had four turnovers in the first half, they have already matched that total here in the second. Georgetown needs to take care if the ball.
February 21st, 2009 at 3:39 pm
That’s team foul #6 on Marquette; Georgetown will shoot for the rest of the half.
February 21st, 2009 at 3:54 pm
Foul #4 on DaJuan with 6:00 to go
February 21st, 2009 at 3:58 pm
Hoyas down 6 with 3:57 to go. Wright will go to the line to shoot 1 and 1 and then it’s two shots from then on for the Hoyas.
February 21st, 2009 at 4:00 pm
big free throws. A front end miss would make the Hoyas down six without ball with under four to play. Not a good position to be in.
February 21st, 2009 at 4:03 pm
DaJuan Summers has just fouled out with 2:47 to go.
February 21st, 2009 at 4:08 pm
Hoyas down six with 48.9 seconds to play, and Coach uses a timeout.
February 21st, 2009 at 4:13 pm
It looks like the Hoyas have lost this one. 14.6 seconds to go and down seven without the ball makes a pretty steep uphill to climb.
February 21st, 2009 at 4:16 pm
Hoyas drop this one 78-72. On a day when Georgetown shoots over 50% from the field and 8-18 from downtown, it was the turnovers and rebounding that cost them the game. It looked like they had those two areas under control in the first half, but things fell apart in the second.
