The Georgetown Hoyas lost their fourth home game of the season, falling to the Marquette Golden Eagles 78-72. The game was a Big East classic with maximum intensity; neither team led by more than seven points until the final minute of the game. Marquette’s Wesley Matthews led all scorers with 23 Points on 9-16 shooting. For the Hoyas, four players scored in double figures, led by Chris Wright’s 17 Points. The first half was an offensive clinic by both teams. Georgetown shot 53.1% from the field, and the Golden Eagles were even hotter connecting on 60.0%. Matthews poured in 18 points for Marquette in the first 20 minutes alone. At halftime, the score was tied at 44.
In the second half, the defense pressure began to increase and points were much harder to come by. The game see-sawed back and forth with the Hoyas starting the half ahead, and Marquette responding with a slow, methodical scoring run. Marquette led by 6 in the final minutes when Georgetown’s execution faded away. The Hoyas missed shots from close range, failed to collect defensive rebounds, and turned the ball over at critical times. Marquette meanwhile continued their remarkably consistent play and pulled away in the final moments.
The Hoyas return to action again on Monday when they will host Louisville at Verizon Center at 7:00pm in a game nationally televised on ESPN.
