Hey everyone, Johnny here at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia getting set for the Big East matchup between Villanova and Georgetown. It’s only 15 minutes away from tipoff, but this place is pretty empty. The Villanova students are on spring break, and it shows. In the parking lot, I saw a bunch of fans in Blue and Gray, so maybe if the Hoyas start showing something on the court, this place can turn pro-Georgetown.
I’ll be back in a few with the starting lineups and the tipoff. Feel free to keep your thoughts coming in the comments.
February 28th, 2009 at 11:51 am
I hear a nice Hoya Saxa cheer going on from the upper deck, Section 216
February 28th, 2009 at 11:57 am
It’s time for the National Anthem. And some girl with a tiara is going to be singing I think
February 28th, 2009 at 11:58 am
Time to Roll, Baby. Time to roll!
February 28th, 2009 at 12:00 pm
I guess she was pretty good. The fans here loved her. She’s competing for Miss New Jersey.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:00 pm
Same lineup for the Hoyas: Wright, Freeman, Summers, Nikita, Monroe.
The Wildcats fans screamed “sucks” after each name was called.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:01 pm
They’re showing some video and all I hear is “Let’s Go Hoyas”
February 28th, 2009 at 12:02 pm
Lineup for the Wildcats: Redding, Reynolds, Clark, Anderson, and Cunningham
February 28th, 2009 at 12:03 pm
Mike here in section 207A. I’m in the upper deck behind the basket the hoyas will shoot at first. A good number hoya fans here.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:04 pm
They haven’t announced the refs, but I see Jim Burr and Michael Stephens.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:05 pm
Hoyas win the jump, and Summers airballs a three.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
Backcourt violation on the Wildcats. I hear “Fundamentals” cheer from 216, but I think hitting the rim on a shot might be considered fundamental too.
Freeman drives to get the scoring started, 2-0 Hoyas.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:07 pm
Now Chris Wright airballs a three from the corner.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:09 pm
Nikita barely hits the rim on his three, but that’s something.
On the other end Freeman picks up his second foul and we’re less than 4 minutes in.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
Jessie Sapp replaces Austin.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
Sloppy play, two quick fouls on Freeman, not an ideal start.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:21 pm
Austin coming back in, along with Clark to check in for the first time.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:23 pm
Vaughn hits a jumpshot as the shotclock ticks to zero, but they wave it off. It’s the 12:00 timeout, Hoyas trailing 11-8. Since it’s an official timeout, I wish the refs would look at that, cause I thought it was good, but at the same time, I don’t really encourage refs heading to the monitors too often.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:23 pm
Nova all over us on defense. We need ball fakes and sharp cuts.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:23 pm
Odd call by jim burr. A shot clock violation was called on Vaughn, but it looked to me like he got the shot off in time, and I didn’t even hear the horn.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:26 pm
Great play by Sims. He misses a jumpshot, leading to a Nova breakout, but as Sapp slows down the ball, Sims hustles back to block the shot.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:27 pm
Post move bucket, steal, and layup for Greg. 4 quick points to give the Hoyas the lead 12-11.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:30 pm
Getting good looks from 3 but still no makes
February 28th, 2009 at 12:32 pm
Great effort there on defense by the Hoyas, and as Wright goes after an errant pass he gets fouled. 8:00 timeout ,tied at 14.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:35 pm
During the 8:00 timeout, the Villanova Irish Stepsters came out to do some Irish step dancing. I thought that was pretty amusing in and of itself, but then the Wildcat mascot was doing some step dancing of his own on the baseline. Or Wild-bear-gopher-monster, whatever that thing is.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:35 pm
game still tied, neither team has hit a three yet. Gross.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:36 pm
Excellent ball movement gives Summers and open look from three. And he hits the first three-pointer of the game for either team.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:38 pm
7 fouls on the Hoyas, 1 and 1 for Reynolds. Who misses the first, but Wildcats get the rebound.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:42 pm
100% atrocious call. Very very little contact.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:42 pm
Three shots for Reynolds as the Hoyas get bludgeoned down low with no call, and then a little bump from Wright gets Scottie to the line.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:44 pm
Hoyas ball after the 4:00 timeout. Georgetown up 24-23.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:45 pm
Here’s a photo I just took of the Hoya fans here. It’s not that good quality, but that’s them up there:
February 28th, 2009 at 12:46 pm
Hoya hanging in there. Nova, as a tribute to the Svhots, is “living at the line” with 13 made fts
February 28th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
Midrange jumper for Chris Wright coming off a screen give the Hoyas the lead 30-27. Hoyas use their first half timeout with 1:12 to go in the half.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
Hoyas starting to make some mid-range jumpers. Summers needs to protect the ball better, he’s lost it a few times
February 28th, 2009 at 12:50 pm
the Hoyas were cold from beyond the arc, they are now taking a step or two inside the line and hitting some shots. Nice adjustment.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:51 pm
Wright gets fouled on a pass with 32.4 seconds to go. Not even 1 and 1 yet.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
Good end to the pass after the careless turnover by Clark
February 28th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
Chris Wright gets a rebound with under five seconds to go, breaks out and tosses an alley-oop layup to Greg Monroe as the clock expires.
Hoyas head into the break up 32-27, their biggest lead so far.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
Win or lose, we really fought that first half. Shooting can go hot and cold, the effort needs to be consistent. Keep it up.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:59 pm
the game finally fell into a rhythm with about six minutes to go. The Hoyas with a five point lead, not too large, but something to work with in the second half.
February 28th, 2009 at 1:00 pm
If you thought some of the halftime competitions at Hoya games were a little sad at times, you should see a Villanova game. They just had these two old guys try to hit a target with a golf ball. Their chip shots landed about 20 feet shy of the target and 10 feet wide.
February 28th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
I just got the halftime stats. I had noticed that Scottie had gotten all of his points at the line during one play when Nikita switched away from Reynolds leaving Scottie wide open for a jump shot.
Here’s some other info for you. Villanova is 7-24 from the field. Georgetown is 14-25.
Hoyas are 1-8 from three, Nova 0-6.
FTs? 3-4 for Georgetown. 13-16 for Villanova.
Both teams have at least 10 turnovers, with 22 combined for the half.
February 28th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
More from the stat sheet. They spelled Jessie Sapp wrong (no i).
Nikita is the leading scorer with 8, tied with Greg Monroe, and Dante Cunningham.
13 mins for Nikita and 8 for Sims. Only five for Jessie, but I guess his minutes were productive because I remember him being out there for a lot more.
February 28th, 2009 at 1:09 pm
Now Scottie scores a field goal. A three-pointer at that.
February 28th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
DaJuan hits a three right back. 45 seconds into the second half and the teams have twice as many threes as the entire first 20 minutes.
February 28th, 2009 at 1:13 pm
Three more points for Nikita, and it’s an eight point game.
February 28th, 2009 at 1:14 pm
Three fouls on Nikita, and Sims checks back in for some action.
February 28th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
Telegraphed pass gives Reynolds a breakout. Freeman fouls, Scottie scores. Three-point play to cut it to four, and Austin has 4 fouls with 16:19 to play.
February 28th, 2009 at 1:19 pm
8 point lead goes down to three, and the Villanova fans are loving it as we head into the 16:00 timeout.
February 28th, 2009 at 1:20 pm
Some bad calls go against the Hoyas and now the crowd is getting into it. Georgetown only up three after leading by eight moments ago.
February 28th, 2009 at 1:26 pm
Refs listen to the crowd on that one, and Greg gets his third foul as a result.
February 28th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
Hoya could use Summers back in. He’s been sitting a while now.
February 28th, 2009 at 1:34 pm
Summers hits a three to push the lead back up to five.
February 28th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
too many thoughtless turnovers. Vaughn needs to hand that ball to a guard without even starting to dribble or thinking of passing
February 28th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
Both teams now being careless with the ball. Jim burr is convinced to change the possession to Georgetown. I thoughtthis was the obvious call.
February 28th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
The refs switched the call to give Georgetown the ball. No announcement here and DaJuan Summers scores a three point play when fans thought it was Nova ball.
February 28th, 2009 at 1:42 pm
Good call on the changed call Johnny. The announcers didn’t even mention it
February 28th, 2009 at 1:42 pm
Official timeout. Hoyas up 6, 50-44, with 7:47 left in the game. Villanova ball when we get back. 20 TOs for Georgetown.
February 28th, 2009 at 1:44 pm
That’s re second time this ref called a travel instead of a jumpball. Seems to me that he just doesn’t know the rule.
February 28th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
They’re having this weird contest where they take two female students and have them dance at midcourt where the best dancer (chosen by the crowd) gets a free dinner.
The thing is, both girls were booed for almost the entire thing, and during the voting, the first girl got booed, but the second girl got booed more, so the first girl got the gift card.
February 28th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
Freeman’s checking back in with 6:46 to play.
February 28th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
Hoyas freaking out now. Very careless with the ball.
February 28th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
Great over the head pass by Greg gives Sapp a layup.
February 28th, 2009 at 1:53 pm
the referees have lost control of the game. Shocking.
February 28th, 2009 at 1:53 pm
Now they’re having some weird contest where there are two fans dressed in Dunkin’ Donuts cup costumes are trying to dribble down and make a layup and dribble back make a jump shot. But one contestant doesn’t even care. He’s talking on his phone while dribbling and shooting.
February 28th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
Two words: free throws.
February 28th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
Wright misses the front end of a very important 1 and 1, and it’s still a two point game.
February 28th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
big rebound by Freeman, he had a bigger man on his back but held on
February 28th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
Austin Freeman just fouled out on an offensive foul. He was driving to the basket and a second defender jumped in to draw the charge.
February 28th, 2009 at 2:00 pm
Chris Wright makes a great steal, drives down court and has his shot blocked. It looked like clear goaltending to me because I thought it came off the backboard. On the rebound, they call a loose ball foul on Wright to give Nova two free throws.
February 28th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
One of two. Hoyas up 52-51 with 1:12 to play.
February 28th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
Wright takes it in for two. Timeout Villanova with 46.8 seconds left. Hoyas up three.
February 28th, 2009 at 2:03 pm
Clark tipped the ball out of bounds as was upset that he didn’t grab it. But the refs gave the ball to Georgetown anyway.
February 28th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
34.9 seconds to play, Hoyas up three with the ball. Villanova only has 8 team fouls, so Georgetown will be shooting 1-1.
February 28th, 2009 at 2:05 pm
Turnover Georgetown, so Villanova ball with 31.1 seconds left.
February 28th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
Stokes shoots a three-pointer just trying to get a call. He jumps at the Hoyas, heaves up the garbage, and the refs don’t call it. Georgetown ball.
Down three with under a shotclock, how can your play be try to have the refs bail you out on a day when you’ve shot 18 more FTs than the opponent?
February 28th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
Chris Wright to shoot 1 and 1 now. 10.0 to play. Wright missed the front end last time he shot FTs
February 28th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
Chris made them both. 5 point game 10 seconds.
February 28th, 2009 at 2:08 pm
Three-pointer for Stokes makes it 56-54 with 3.5 seconds to play. Nova TO.
February 28th, 2009 at 2:08 pm
No more timeouts for Villanova, 1 for Georgetown. It’ll be two shots if Villanova fouls. We’ll have to see if the Hoyas can inbound it. But they do have 1 TO.
February 28th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
They can’t catch Chris to foul, and that’s game 56-54 Hoyas win. It’s the third win against a team currently in the Top 10, but it’s not yet good enough for the Hoyas. They need to keep winning games.
That said, huge win for this struggling team, and it’s the first close game that Georgetown’s pulled out since Memphis.
February 28th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
Tough win for the Hoyas. This time we overcame the adversity and won without our best effort.
February 28th, 2009 at 2:13 pm
I’m about to head to the press conference. Bitter Villanova fans are chanting “NIT” but there still is hope for these Hoyas. And Wildcat fans should better be worrying about getting that extra bye in the Big East Tournament. They play a tough Providence next, and it’s not gonna be easy for them to catch up with Pitt or Marquette.
February 28th, 2009 at 2:13 pm
Nothing has come easy for Georgetown the past few weeks. They fought for forty minutes in a classic oldschool big east dog fight, and came out with avictory. Maybe it’s too late to save the season, but this is a great win.
