In a must-win game against the Big East’s 13th placed St. John’s, the Georgetown Hoyas failed to execute and lost 59-56 in overtime. After a back and forth first half, the Hoyas headed into the locker room with a two point lead, 31-29.
In the second half, St. John’s could not get the ball in the basket as they went the first 13 minutes without a field goal. In that time, Georgetown went ona 14-1 run to make it 45-30 with 10:42 remaining. But as the game started winding down, St. John’s kept in it and methodically chipped away at the Hoyas’ lead. Georgetown could only muster one field goal in the final 10 minutes of regulation, and key free throws from the Red Storm’s Rob Thomas forced overtime.
In the extra session, Georgetown did not have enough to outlast the Red Storm as a contested three-pointer from DaJuan Summers to force double overtime did not fall.
The Hoyas play again on Saturday on Senior Day against DePaul with a rare 5:00 start. It is the final game of the season for Georgetown who will return to Madison Square Garden next Tuesday for the Big East Tournament.
