Georgetown vs. DePaul: 03/07/2009
| Team | 1 | 2 | T |
| DePaul | 15 | 25 | 40 |
| Georgetown | 24 | 24 | 48 |
Hey everybody. Johnny here at Verizon Center. Nobody’s here yet and it’s less than an hour to go until tipoff on Georgetown’s senior day. It’s spring break for Georgetown students, so the seats behind me are filled with random fans, and the student section across from me is pretty empty.
This is the final game of the season for the Hoyas, and their opponent is the 0-17 DePaul Blue Demons. Not the greatest season for either team this year, and while DePaul is looking for their first conference win, Georgetown is looking for a victory to send off senior Jessie Sapp in style.
We talked at the beginning of the season how Jessie Sapp was the lone scholarship senior, and with walk-on Bryon Jansen sitting out most of the season due to injury, he was alone in his class. It may not have been the best season for Jessie, and I don’t think anyone would have expected that he would come off the bench on senior day, but it looks that way as the Verizon Center Diamondvision shows no sign of #21.
It looks like it’s gonna be Summers, Wright, Mescheriakov, Monroe, and Freeman to start this one (I did see Austin Freeman warming up with the team before they headed to the locker room). For the Blue Demons, the scoreboard read s Tucker, Kelly, Koshwal, Walker, and Poscic.
I’ll keep you updated in case the scoreboard changes, and I’ll be back with more information once the game gets underway. Let me know what you think in the comments.

Here’s some news for you. Seton Hall beat Cincinnati today in overtime. That means, win or lose, Georgetown will play St. John’s on Tuesday in the #12 – #13 game at 2:00pm. And if the Hoyas keep winning, they’ll be playing in the 2:00 slot on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
March 7th, 2009 at 4:32 pm
There are only a few students here, but the girls I saw had T-shirts that read, “I wish that I was Jessie’s Girl” in a duel tribute to Jessie Sapp and Rick Springfield.
March 7th, 2009 at 4:34 pm
One of the male cheerleaders has got a gray #21 jersey on in honor of Jessie (nothing for Rick Springfield).
Meanwhile, Jack the bulldog’s got a blue #33 jersey on.
March 7th, 2009 at 4:36 pm
Georgetown Prep junior / Georgetown commit Markel Starks is sitting a couple rows behind the Georgetown bench.
March 7th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
I’m just full of information today. (Maybe cause I’m like the only guy here)
Refs are going to be Jeff Clark, Mike Kitts, and Clarence Armstrong.
March 7th, 2009 at 4:43 pm
DePaul’s got their names on the backs of their warmups so I found out that they’ve got a Freshman named Bizoukas. That sounds to me like Bazookas. Kind of a cool name.
March 7th, 2009 at 4:47 pm
They’ve started the We Are Georgetown video, and the clocks read 1 minute left, even though we’ve got 11 minutes to tipoff time. Looks like we’re getting ready for a Jansen/Sapp presentation.
March 7th, 2009 at 4:53 pm
John Thompson III and Bernard Muir are giving out awards
Senior manager Chris Golski, walk-on Bryon Jansen, and Jessie Sapp all received silver bowls.
Nice ovation for Jessie from the sparse crowd here.
Now the teams are gonna warm up for a few more minutes before tipoff.
March 7th, 2009 at 4:56 pm
Alright. The anthem was sung before the senior festivities. Now it’ll be the starting lineup and game time.
March 7th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
Attendance guess?
March 7th, 2009 at 5:01 pm
Hoyas win the tip and turn it over on the first possession. 2-0 DePaul.
March 7th, 2009 at 5:01 pm
Nice step in J by Austin Freeman gets the Hoyas on the board.
March 7th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
Guest, I’m horrible at that kind of thing. The lower bowl is about half full, I’d say.
March 7th, 2009 at 5:03 pm
Great move by Greg as he spun past the defender, took a dribble and had a baseline jam.
March 7th, 2009 at 5:03 pm
Sapp is heading to the scorer’s table.
March 7th, 2009 at 5:04 pm
Standing ovation for Jessie as he checks in for the first time on senior day.
March 7th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
8-2 Hoyas at the 16:00 timeout and Nikita check back in for Austin.
March 7th, 2009 at 5:09 pm
Mike here in 120. Somber crowd as most students ate on spring break. Jessie already has a basket and two rebounds on senior day.
March 7th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
Lots of passes in tight quarters today on fast breaks. I think all 5 Hoyas touched that one before Sims went up. His shot rimmed out but he’s got 2 free throws for it.
March 7th, 2009 at 5:15 pm
Nice help defense that time as Hoyas forced a shot clock violation. The bench kept clapping more and more as the clock kept ticking, and Freeman jumped up after they blew the whistle to cheer on his team.
March 7th, 2009 at 5:22 pm
Coach calls a timeout with 8:44 left in the half. Hoyas are up 12-4 and Greg and Austin are set to check back in
March 7th, 2009 at 5:24 pm
Catch and shoot 3 pointer for Jessie. 15-4 Hoyas.
March 7th, 2009 at 5:25 pm

March 7th, 2009 at 5:27 pm
Hoyas up 11, depaul is atrocious… So are st johns and seton hall though.
March 7th, 2009 at 5:30 pm
Foul on Free as he swatted pretty hard on the ball. Pretty sure it was all ball, but he made a huge motion with his arm and it was loud when he slapped it.
March 7th, 2009 at 5:32 pm
Greg’s 1st foul as he tried to draw a charge.
March 7th, 2009 at 5:34 pm
The hoyas sleepwalking, still up 12. This game is pretty irrelevant but I expected a little more effort.
March 7th, 2009 at 5:36 pm
Freeman comes up limping and he immediately gets subbed out. A brief talk with the trainer, and he’s fine.
March 7th, 2009 at 5:39 pm
Nice post move from Greg as he was on the right block. Makes it easier to use his left when he’s on that side of the basket.
March 7th, 2009 at 5:43 pm
DePaul scores on their last possession of the half to make it 24-15 Georgetown. The Blue Demons’ 15 points make them better than American, worse than FIU and about even with Savannah State.
March 7th, 2009 at 5:46 pm
Nothing much to say. Hoyas only up nine against depaul. Side note: Maryland lost to Virginia 68-63. Top spot in Atlantic 11 here we come.
March 7th, 2009 at 5:57 pm
DePaul ball to start the second, and they hit a three to cut it to 6. 24-18.
March 7th, 2009 at 5:58 pm
Steal and layup by Will Walker, and it’s a four point game.
March 7th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
Buzzer beater floater makes it 24-22. Wow.
March 7th, 2009 at 6:02 pm
Tie game. Hoyas have yet to score in the 2nd half.
March 7th, 2009 at 6:03 pm
Nikita drives in for two to make it 26-24 with a little under 15 minutes to go.
March 7th, 2009 at 6:05 pm
Georgetown’s offense came back, and now DePaul needs a timeout. 31-26 Hoyas with 13:17 left in the game. This TO is stretched to a full, but we haven’t had the 16:00 official yet.
March 7th, 2009 at 6:06 pm
Hoyas give up a 9-0 run to start the half. Let’s hope that five point run by summers woke up the rest of his teammates.
March 7th, 2009 at 6:08 pm
Quick foul on Jessie – 16:00 timeout now.
March 7th, 2009 at 6:16 pm
Walker is killing the Hoyas. He has 18 points and just got a steal. Hoyas up two at the 12 minute timeout. This is a little embarassing.
March 7th, 2009 at 6:25 pm
This game is waaaay too close. Let’s see if the hoyas can string a few baskets together. I expect 45 points will win this game.
March 7th, 2009 at 6:30 pm
Hoyas push the lead back up to nine and Jessie (who was on the bench) is out on the court pumping his arms to get the crowd back into this one. TO DePaul.
March 7th, 2009 at 6:34 pm
Sloppy fast break miraculously ends up with a Summers dunk which puts the lead up to 11. A three by Kelly cuts it quickly back to 8.
March 7th, 2009 at 6:37 pm
Mike got on the scoreboard with his “Forever 21: Jessie Sapp” sign. Too bad there’s no more fan of the game.
March 7th, 2009 at 6:44 pm
The students are chanting for Bryon Jansen. He’s wearing a suit and tie, so I don’t think he’ll make an appearance tonight.
March 7th, 2009 at 6:45 pm
Hoyas are up by 8 with 49.9 seconds to play and Coach calls a timeout. It looks like DePaul’s gonna go winless in the Big East season.
March 7th, 2009 at 6:47 pm
Wright goes 1-4 from the line down the stretch. Let’s see if DaJuan can push this lead to 10 with 26.2 remaining.
March 7th, 2009 at 6:49 pm
Sapp is subbed out and he gets a loud, standing ovation. There are a lot more people here than there were to start this one. And Sapp is getting hugs down the line at the bench.
March 7th, 2009 at 6:50 pm
That’ll do it. Final score Georgetown 48, DePaul 40.
