Entering the Big East Regular season finale, both the Georgetown Hoyas and the DePaul Blue Demons already knew their first round opponents in the Big East Tournament. The game was played with an evident lack of intensity. But late in the second half, with the Hoyas facing a second straight defeat to an inferior opponent, DaJuan Summers asserted himself to help Georgetown pull away for a 48-40 victory. Summers led the Hoyas with 15 points, 13 of which came in the final 15 minutes. DePaul’s Will Walker single handily kept the Blue Demons within striking distance for most of the game, scoring a game-high 20 points on 9-23 from the field.
Walker scored the opening basket after a steal and transition jump shot, but then DePaul failed to score for the next 10:38. By that time the Hoyas had scored 12 points in a row on their way to extending their largest lead of 14 points. Seven different Hoyas scored in the first half led by Greg Monroe’s six points. The Hoyas led 24-15 at halftime.
DePaul opened the second half with nine straight points to tie the score, raising the anxiety of the fans at the Verizon Center. At that point, Summers led the Hoyas on a 16-5 scoring run. Summers accounted for 13 of the following 16 points for the Hoyas, scoring 11 and collecting one assist.
On Senior Day, Jessie Sapp scored seven points, grabbed five rebounds, and collected two steals in his final regular season game at home. Sapp provided a spark in the first half to help the Hoyas to their largest lead, and received a nice ovation when he came off the bench. In the final seconds with the outcome determined, Sapp had his curtain call and left the court to a standing ovation. After the final buzzer, with the student section chanting his same, Sapp acknowledged their support and blew several kisses in their direction.
Georgetown now moves onto Madison Square Garden for the opening round of the Big East Tournament where the Hoyas will be the #12 seed and face the #13 seed St. John’s on Tuesday. Tip off will take place about 20 minutes after the conclusion of the tournament’s opening game scheduled to begin at noon. The game will be the second time that St. John’s and Georgetown will play in the Garden in 8 days. St. John’s beat the Hoyas in overtime this past Tuesday. The Hoyas have not faced St. John’s in the Big East Tournament since 1992.
