Georgetown vs. St. John’s: 03/10/2009
| Team | 1 | 2 | T |
| St. John’s | 30 | 34 | 64 |
| Georgetown | 28 | 31 | 59 |
For the first time in three seasons, the Georgetown Hoyas will not be playing in the NCAA tournament. The Hoyas allowed their terrible last two months get even worse in the opening round of the Big East Tournament, losing to the 13th seed St. John’s 64-59. Chris Wright led the Hoyas with 14 points, and Greg Monroe added 8 rebounds before fouling out with 13 points.
It was a back and forth game throughout, but as it has been for the latter half of the season, poor free throw shooting and a failure to execute on offense doomed the Hoyas. Georgetown had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds, but as Austin Freeman could not get open, he passed the ball to Nikita Mescheriakov on the baseline. The tying three-pointer was well of the mark, and the Hoyas’ Big East Tournament run was over two hours after it started.
With a 16-14 record, the Hoyas are waiting to hear if they will receive an NIT invitation, as their NCAA tournament hopes have been dashed.
