The Georgetown Hoyas earned a victory in their opening game of the 2010-11 season, defeating Old Dominion 62-59 at the Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk. After trailing for most of the game, a late surge led by the Georgetown backcourt helped the Hoyas take the lead and escape with the narrow victory as a Darius James three-point attempt at the buzzer missed the mark.

Coming into tonight’s game the Monarchs held the fourth longest home winning streak in the nation, spanning all of last season, with 23 straight wins in Norfolk. It appeared as though Old Dominion would keep the streak alive, as they outmuscled the Hoyas in the first half and forced 12 Georgetown turnovers. At the break, Georgetown was trailing by six, 19-25.

In the second half, it was more of the same until the six minute mark, when the Georgetown backcourt came alive. Austin Freeman hit a three-pointer, and followed that up with a four point play on the next possession. Chris Wright then hit back-to-back threes next, to finish off a 13-2 run which would give Georgetown a lead they would never relinquish.

Chris Wright led all scorers with 19 points, followed by Jason Clark with 18 and Austin Freeman with 17. For Wright, this game marked his admission to the 1,000 point club as he now has scored 1,014 points in his Georgetown career.

The Hoyas next game is on Monday when they play Tulane in their home opener. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm at the Verizon Center.
