Georgetown opened the 2011-12 season with a 83-54 win over Savannah State. The Hoyas looked cohesive despite the drastic change in personnel from last season.
The first half was close throughout until Georgetown used a late run to take an 11 point lead with under a minute to go. A three pointer by Deric Rudolph cut the lead to eight, and the Hoyas went into the locker room leading 32-24.
Five quick points from the Tigers to start the second half cut the lead to three, 32-29, and Coach Thompson called a timeout to refocus the team. The Hoyas responded, going on a 20-2 run to take control of the game.
Nine different Hoyas scored in the game, including all four freshman who saw action. Henry Sims led Georgetown with a career-high 19 points off of 9-11 shooting, as Rudolph led Savannah state with 12.
The Hoyas return to the Verizon Center Monday night as they start the Maui Invitational Tournament with a game on the mainland. Tip-off against UNC Greensboro is at 7:00pm.
