Georgetown vs. Jacksonville: 11/17/2008
| Team | 1 | 2 | T |
| Jacksonville | 25 | 37 | 62 |
| Georgetown (#22) | 37 | 34 | 71 |
Hey everybody. It’s about an hour away from tipoff of the 2008-09 Georgetown Basketball season. The teams are warming up, the students are piling in, and the rest of the fans are … meandering in.
I’ll be checking back a couple times before the game gets underway, and then I’ll be providing live updates throughout the game. Your commentary is welcome and encouraged, so keep this thread going with whatever thoughts you’ve got.
In the meantime, here are the starting lineups:
For the Hoyas, it’s what most people had been projecting:
Summers, Wright, Monroe, Freeman, and Sapp
For the Jacksonville Dolphins, it’s gonna be Ben Smith, Ayron Hardy, Evan Jefferson, Lehmon Colbert, and Marcus Allen.
November 17th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Refs tonight are gonna be Jamie Luckie, Clarence Armstrong, and Brent Barnaky.
November 17th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
Never heard of em.
November 17th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
This is kinda weird. The team just came out for layup lines, and they showed the old Jack the Bulldog growling graphic on the big screen circa 2001. Then they started playing “Shout,” but they only got through “Weeeeeelllll…” and then it was silence for a while.
Hopefully they’ll figure out what song the team comes out to by Saturday.
Unless that’s what they meant to do.
November 17th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
@Hoya Gray,
Looks like we had Luckie ref us last year against Fordham and at Syracuse
November 17th, 2008 at 7:24 pm
Hoyas are coming out for the last layups before game time. This time they had the pep band fill the awkward silence with the fight song.
November 17th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
They’re showing the opening video. Same song as last year, written by Andy Rowdon of Georgetown’s Assistant Director of Marketing.
November 17th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
Hey everybody. Mike here in section 120. I’ll be putting in my two cents worth from the crowd throughout the game. Here’s my first thought: we only have 11 players, including Jensen.
November 17th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
National Anthem played by the Pep Band and I got to see the backs of a lot of students with the new We Are Georgetown Shirts: Our Heroes Change, The Legend Lives On
November 17th, 2008 at 7:32 pm
lets go hoyas!
November 17th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
No t-shirts or cutoffs underneath any Hoyas to start this one, and it looks like Greg will be jumping it up.
November 17th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
Hoyas win the tip — barely (a couple missed swats at it later) — and start out with a backdoor layup, a steal, and a dunk.
November 17th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
That’s Monroe’s first block as a Hoya, and his first rebound a couple seconds later.
November 17th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
2nd block
November 17th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
Nice work Greg!
November 17th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
Nic efast break!
November 17th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
Nice little post move from Monreo and he picks up two more points.
November 17th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
good start for the hoyas… A little sloppy but lots of intensity. Wright was yelling at the student secion to make more noise.
November 17th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
After the 16 minute timeout, Lukasiak’s free throws make it 8-2 Georgetown.
November 17th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
Another block for Monroe? I know it’s early but that looks good.
November 17th, 2008 at 7:45 pm
Jessie misses his first shot but he had to take it, the shot clock was at two.
November 17th, 2008 at 7:45 pm
Austin looked at the ref after that block with a face like he thought it was gonna be a charge. He had an apologetic grimace on, that was apparently, for naught.
November 17th, 2008 at 7:46 pm
Vaughn will be the first sub for the Hoyas, coming in for …
November 17th, 2008 at 7:46 pm
Monroe. Nice ovation for Greg after his first minutes in Gray
November 17th, 2008 at 7:47 pm
make your freethrosw!!
November 17th, 2008 at 7:47 pm
Wattad in early, as he replaces Summers.
November 17th, 2008 at 7:48 pm
Wattad misses his first shot, and the Hoyas are 0-3 from three so far.
November 17th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
After a nice defensive set, Freeman misses a three and hangs his head once it misses.
November 17th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
I like those minutes for Omar. nice work!
November 17th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
nica take chriss!!
November 17th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
At the 12 minute timeout, it was the Verizon Cash Shootout. As predicted, it was awkward and embarassing, zero dollars for the senior. The extra foot really hurt him.
November 17th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
looks like at this point the hoyas’ defense is better than the offense.
November 17th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
Omar’s checking back in for DaJuan who has two quick fouls.
November 17th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
thundrous!
November 17th, 2008 at 7:58 pm
Looks like Chris will be getting a lot of free throws this year if he pushes it as much as he does. He’ll have to do better though. so far he’s 1-6 from the line – yuck
November 17th, 2008 at 7:58 pm
Nikita is checking in for the first time.
November 17th, 2008 at 8:00 pm
I like that, getting his own rebound. nice work from the big fella
November 17th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
For which NBA team does former Georgetown center currently play?
C. Indiana Pacers!
More Jiffy Lube Trivia, less three-point shootouts.
November 17th, 2008 at 8:03 pm
1. Trivia question=too easy
2. To go to the hoya hoop club, go to sections 120 or… 120!
November 17th, 2008 at 8:03 pm
he makes his freethrows too!! im gonna like this guy
November 17th, 2008 at 8:05 pm
There we go. Austin ends the season’s three-point slump with a shot from the corner
November 17th, 2008 at 8:06 pm
Sapp’s first points as a senior – a steal and a layup
November 17th, 2008 at 8:08 pm
Sims’ first minutes means all the Hoyas have seen the floor except for Jansen, and there are still 5 minutes left in the half.
November 17th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
and one!
November 17th, 2008 at 8:11 pm
Some people behind me in the student section are singing “Greg Greg Greg” to The Eye of the Tiger. Roy’s legacy lives on, I guess.
November 17th, 2008 at 8:12 pm
looks like Monroe’s a lttle gimpy. Johnny, could see what happened to him? It looked like he went up for that block right in front of you.
November 17th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
I got nothing in terms of Monroe’s leg. Looks fine on the bench (no ones giving him any treatment)
November 17th, 2008 at 8:16 pm
not very good from wattad on his last two inbounds plays.
November 17th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
Nice work Vaughn. Way to stick with it
November 17th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
there ya go chris
November 17th, 2008 at 8:20 pm
Coach calls a timeout up 34-23 with 21.6 seconds left in the half.
November 17th, 2008 at 8:21 pm
Nice play call by coach. Wright hits a three to put the Hoyas up 14.
November 17th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
A couple of freethrows for Jacksonville, and that’s the half.
Hoyas leading 37-25 with ten players seeing the court. Hoyas shot 45% from the field, but only 29% from three and 46% from the stripe.
November 17th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
Evan Jefferson starts the scoring in the second half for the Dolphins, 37-27
November 17th, 2008 at 8:40 pm
wow!
November 17th, 2008 at 8:40 pm
Excellent fake from Sapp as he takes it to the basket for two.
November 17th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
At least they’re consistent, a blocks a block, no charges tonight
November 17th, 2008 at 8:51 pm
come on hoyas, lets goo
November 17th, 2008 at 8:54 pm
hoyas need to regain some focus.
November 17th, 2008 at 8:54 pm
Here’s a neat announcement from Fr. McFadden:
Alonzo Mourning will be in the concourse signing copies of his new book “Reslience: Faith, Focus, Triumph” at noon before this Saturday’s game.
November 17th, 2008 at 8:55 pm
there ya go jessiee!
November 17th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
Freeman left the game earlier limping. It’s good to see him check back in.
November 17th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
way to go dajuannn!!!
November 17th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
That livened the place up a bit – a backdoor cut leading to a big dunk from DaJuan Summers
November 17th, 2008 at 9:04 pm
Not the best game for Austin, he’s shooting 1-9.
November 17th, 2008 at 9:06 pm
After the Dolphins cut the score to 8 with 8 minutes left, Hoyas go to Monroe for a bucket and call timeout
November 17th, 2008 at 9:06 pm
Verizon Center staff started to play “Shout” again but ended that quickly.
November 17th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
Nice move from Monroe. It’s a big shot when the threes aren’t falling
November 17th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
wheres the foul??
November 17th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
Monroe just picked up his fourth foul going for a rebound, and now it’s the 8 minute timeout. Finally, it’s time for “Shout” to play its way through
November 17th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
hit your freethrows austin
November 17th, 2008 at 9:14 pm
Just as Jacksonville cuts it to 4 with a little over 5 minutes remaining, Summers is cool as he puts Georgetown back up by 6
November 17th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
Clark’s first points are huge, putting the Hoyas back up 6 again.
November 17th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
too close, hoyas, too close
November 17th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
this game is certainly closer than many of us expected, but it’s giving the team a chance to get used to executing under pressure.
November 17th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
Big block from Monroe, breakaway for Summers who got fouled. Coach was asking for an intentional, but no go.
November 17th, 2008 at 9:26 pm
1 for 2 for Austin puts the score to 63-57 with 2 minutes left.
November 17th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
DaJuan’s free throws put the Hoyas up ten with 48 seconds to go; that oughta do it.
November 17th, 2008 at 9:34 pm
That’ll do it. Final score 71-62 Hoyas.
November 17th, 2008 at 9:34 pm
a wins a win, and we’re undefeated
November 17th, 2008 at 10:50 pm
Interesting game tonight. Getting to know Monroe and the other new guys kept it interesting while the team was generally underwhelming (with occasional flashes of brilliance). Rebounding trouble from last year seemed to continue tonight. Liked how Thompson spread the playing time around.
